PERPLEXED BY PAIN

November 20, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure ; but he for our profit , that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby .” Heb. 12:10-11

We are not in this world merely to do a certain work — but to be fashioned into beauty of Christly character. If we would always remember this, we would not be so perplexed by the mysteries of our lives.

If joy is ours — it is to make us a greater blessing to others.

If sorrow is ours — it is to bring out Christ’s image in us more clearly.

If our hopes are disappointed — it is because God has some better thing for us than that which we so earnestly desire.

If we are called to endure pain — it is because the best in us can be called out only by pain.

If bereavement comes and we are left without the human arm we have leaned upon — it is because there are elements of strength in our life which never could be developed unless the human support were removed.

If our burdens are heavy — it is because we grow best under burdens.

If we suffer wrong — it is to teach us better the great lessons of meekness, patience and sweet temper.

Always the Master is making us into the beauty of the holy pattern He has set for us, and preparing us for greater usefulness and better service.–J R Miller, 1907

Not knowing what we might have to face each day, we would do well to start each morning reflecting on this promise–“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose”.(Rom. 8:28)

AMERICA’S HOPE

October 1, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

I have hesitated to write this article because I feel almost certain that some folks will not understand what I’m saying, but I feel compelled to do so anyway. These words are not meant to be hurried over without careful reading and serious thought. I might not be saying what you first think, so slow down and listen carefully.

With the presidential election just ahead of us there are some things that we need to think about. Regardless of who is running for office our choice should be based on the person’s character, beliefs, and ability to do the job. But since we are stuck in a two party system we sometimes don’t have much of a choice, so we vote for, what is commonly called, “the lesser of two evils”. Unfortunately when that happens we’re in trouble either way–since when does God approve of one evil over another? Either evil is offensive to God and troublesome to us. I believe we are in more trouble than we know.

People on both sides think that if their man gets elected it will be a step in the right direction to solving our problems. Wouldn’t that be nice! But it’s not going to happen. If you really believe that you haven’t fully examined the record of both the candidates. They are more alike than different–IMO. They are closer to the same than most people imagine. I’m not saying it doesn’t make any difference who wins–I believe it does. However, I am saying that regardless of who wins our problems aren’t going to go away. Anytime we vote for the “lesser of two evils” we are in trouble–evil is evil.

The reason I’m pointing this out is to get folks to see that we are in trouble and we won’t get out by way of the ballot box (Reagan is dead). Getting out to vote isn’t a quick-fix cure-all. We won’t rise above our problems until we get down on our knees. The root of America’s problem isn’t political at all– it is spiritual. We might be the kindest, most benevolent nation on earth, but we are evil. I know that might not set too well with some of you, but it is true. If we use God’s Word as the standard, that is an undeniable fact. We have broken God’s laws, flaunted our rebellion in the face of God, and ignored His warnings– without any fear of the consequences. How can you not call that “evil”?

Do I care who wins this election? You bet I do! But the winner is not going to be our savior. Only God can deliver us from this mess we’re in. Until God’s people are revived our nation has no chance of getting better.

After his visit to America in the 1830’s, Alexis Tocqueville said:” Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.” How is it that a Frenchman could see what we don’t?

There was a time when we understood. Just read the record form our forefathers, examine our legal document, listen to the songs, and look at your money–it’s all right there for everyone to see! “In God we trust”, but do we now? I’ll let you answer that.

When Hawaii became the 50th state of the Union in 1959 she brought with her this motto–“The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness”. They had it right. “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people”(Proverbs 14:34). The solution to America’s present dilemma and the hope for her future is repentance. Without that there is no end to our present problems, nor bright hope for tomorrow. We either repent or perish.”If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”–2 Chron. 7:14

You say you love this country, you claim that you would die for her if necessary, and you even pray, “God bless America”–you probably pray that your candidate will win. But are you willing to “humble” yourself, “pray”, “seek” God’s face, and “turn from” your wicked ways? Until we make this personal nothing changes for the better. It is one thing to love your country, it’s another thing to love God. It is in the latter that we find the help and hope we need. Nothing short of that can avail. Think about it!

FEAR OR FAITH?

November 19, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines…yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation – Habakkuk 3:17-18

Those who know me know that I refer to these verses often and that they are among my favorite. That’s why the following devotion had my complete attention as soon as I began to read:

“What a wonderful encouragement from such a dark and discouraging prophecy!

While the prophet Habakkuk struggled with the fact that God was going to send a terrible and decimating judgment on rebellious Israel, he eventually came to realize that God is sovereign. Although God’s chastening may not feel good, or yield immediate fruit, it is always right and good and it is always his prerogative to allow it.

Habakkuk ends the record of his struggles with this great declaration: although suffering may come, although pleasures and provision may run dry, yet I will rejoice in the Lord. The Lord, not my surroundings, is my salvation!

Habakkuk’s profound response to the horror he and his people are about to face is, quite simply, faith in God. It is faith which does not depend on circumstances to be sustained. It is faith which does not require prosperity or mental/emotional acuity to persist. It is faith which is able to say when the storm clouds gather, “Thy will be done.”

Habakkuk had come to know that God was beautiful. And he could see that whatever God had for him was the very best. Only true faith can say that. Only true faith can see God as “the God of my salvation” when joyful deliverance seems so elusive and God himself so distant. May that faith be yours today.” ( Baptist Bible Hour)

SUFFERING SAINTS

September 29, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

By way of introducing my message Wednesday night I read Hebrews 11:33-40. If you haven’t done so in a while I suggest you do it today. We tend to forget what a great price God’s people have paid for being true to the faith. What they suffered was horrible, and in some parts of the world it still happens today. Why do we feel that we deserve to fare better? Are we better? Of course not. The fact of the matter is that if we live godly we will encounter persecution ( 2Timothy 3:12). Good people often have bad problems. Saints suffer. You can’t judge a person on the severity of their suffering—some of the best people have had the worst problems. But you can tell a great deal about a person’s character by their attitude toward their afflictions.

How we respond to our trials is crucial. If we get bitter instead of better, if we murmur and complain, if we fret and fume we make ourselves and others miserable. We lose our credibility as “believers”. The moment we act as though God is being unfair we toss our testimony out the window. When we rant and rave we cut off the line of communication with others and lose the chance to be a witness to them.

It’s when we accept what God allows or causes with a sweet spirit that others sit up and take notice. Now their ear is open and their heart is receptive. Now we have an opportunity to show others the difference that Jesus can make! We have it far better than we deserve and much easier than others, such as those described in Hebrews 11:36-38, and our pay-day is someday. We have no reason to believe that we can or should expect life to be a bed-of- roses. To the contrary–our Lord warned us of troubles and trials. He Himself suffered beyond anything that we can describe. Why should we complain?

We live in troublesome times, the days are difficult, but God’s grace is sufficient. He will empower and enable us to live victoriously. Our problems create for us a glorious opportunity to bear witness for Christ. Out of the bad can come good, just as God promised in Romans 8:28. Others have suffered, now it’s our turn. May we, by the grace of God, be so bold and brave! Think about it!

SEEING YOUR SINFULNESS

November 18, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“For all have sinned , and come short of the glory of God;”–Rom. 3:23
No one is saved until they first realize they are lost, but they can’t do that until they first realize they are a sinner in need of salvation. Although that ought to be easy, many folks have a difficult time admitting it is true. If you are one of those people, what would it take to convince you that you are indeed a sinner? Here’s a suggestion.

Let’s suppose that God gave you a special revelation wherein He asked you what it would take for you to become a follower of Christ. Suppose He offered you perfect health for the rest of your life. Or suppose He added to that a promise that you would live until you are 120 years old. Still not interested? Suppose He offered you one million dollars a year for the rest of your life. Or suppose He said, “Just fill in the blank,_______ and I’ll give you whatever you want.

I suspect at some point a good number of people would take the offer and make “Christianity” their religion of choice. Of course this would never happen, because a person with that attitude could never be saved, but don’t miss the point. Would this not reveal the sinfulness of man? Think about how selfish such a person would be to do that. To know that God loved us enough to give His Son, who loved us so much that He gave His life for us, and then reject Him until He gave us what we wanted would be as sinful as anything could be. That would be an awful insult to God. Would that not prove that you are a sinner? And is it not true that for most people religion is all about what they get from it? Can you imagine how many would adopt Christianity as their religion if in doing so they could get whatever they wanted? This is what makes Romans 7:7 so important–“…. I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said , Thou shalt not covet.” Covetousness condemns us and who deny their guilt in this?

Now let’s look at this in another way. Rather than seeing yourself as sinful, picture yourself as perfect. Where there is sin there there must be some standard, a means to determine right for wrong, or a law that has been violated. So, put yourself in God’s place— pretend that you are holy and just. Now suppose someone did to you what was done to Jesus. Would that not be an offense? Would you not call that person a wrong-doer, a sinner? Would you not demand justice? Of course you would. It’s easy to see the guilt of others when the offense is against you—but you claim you don’t see it when you are the offending party. Really? To claim that you can’t see yourself as a sinner is dishonest. It goes beyond the pale of ignorance. It is sinful stubborn pride that causes you to deny your sinfulness, pretend you don’t need forgiveness, and reject the sacrifice of Christ.

Admit it or not, you are a sinner. You have broken God’s righteous law and, because God is just, your sin must be paid for. The good news is that Christ suffered and died to pay for your sins. Through Him you can be forgiven and delivered from the wrath of God, but you must receive Him as your Lord and Savior. To do that you must first recognize that you are indeed a sinner in the sight of God. That ought to be easy.
