JUSTICE OR GRACE?

September 8, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“For all have sinned , and come short of the glory of God“–Rom. 3:23
Ask a thousand people if they believe justice should prevail and just about everyone would answer “Yes”. So let’s ask another question–“Do you believe God is just?” Again the answer would normally be in the affirmative. If you answered anything other than “Yes” you don’t know God. He is always honest, fair, holy, and righteous. He is perfect in every way.

Now let’s make this personal– Do you believe God is just in regards to you? It’s easy to demand justice for others, but it’s a whole new ball game when it comes to us personally. Here’s my point–what do you think about what God thinks about you? Do you agree with His indictment against you when He declares you are a sinner, when He says you are “condemned”? Do you still think justice should prevail? Do you still believe God is just? Whether you agree or not, the fact remains that all have sinned and all are justly condemned by a righteous God who declares us sinful and deserving of hell. Until we believe that there is no hope of us being saved.

Now let’s shift the focus. We’ve been talking about God, now let’s talk about you. In light of God’s perfection and your sinfulness there can be no justification for you rejecting Him. Doing so would be a terrible injustice. It would be an insult to God to be rejected by sinful man. Think about it. God gives us life and every good thing, has never done us wrong, and provides a way for us to be delivered from wrath and then we reject Him. Is that not unjust? Does that not prove that we are sinful? The fact is, there is never a just reason for us to reject God, and it is shocking that we would.

It is amazing that sinful man would reject a holy God, but it is even more amazing that a perfect God would accept a sinful man. There is only one word to explain that–“grace”, and there is only one person who can make it possible–“Christ”. Only because of Him can God “be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus” (Rom. 3:26). The Bible “commandeth all men every where to repent” (Acts 17:30), and that is rightly so. God isn’t just inviting you to trust Jesus and be saved, He is commanding you to do so. He does so because He loves you and wants the best for you. If you truly understood blessings of obeying this command you would do so without hesitation. The believers benefits are many and marvelous. Receive Him and be saved. Reject Him and you will suffer His wrath. Either way He is just– your choice doesn’t change His character, but only by you receiving Him are you justified. Your decision decides your destiny—heaven or hell. What shall it be?

RELIEVED BY REST

May 9, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Recompense to no man evil for evil–live peaceably with all–avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he is thirst, give him drink–Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.–Romans 12:17-21

While I rejoice about what I am in Christ, and take no credit for it, I am ashamed of what I am by nature and I take all the blame for it.  You’ve heard of “Dirty Harry”? Well sometimes I feel like “Dirty Dave”. In other words, by nature I want to “get even”, “make the guilty pay”, exact revenge. Were it the “old days”, without Christ, I fear I would have been a vigilante. I’m not proud of that. I know it’s wrong. I’m just being honest. I am weak in this area and have to be on guard constantly.

I tend to get terriblily upset when I see innocent people mistreated. I am troubled even more when I feel I am the “innocent” party. I can’t stand bullies, yet as a teen that’s exactly what I was. Now, I never want to hurt people again–oops, except maybe those who hurt others, those who are unfair or unjust. So, as you can see, I still have a tendency to do wrong. Chances are, many of you have the same problem. And it’s a problem strictly forbidden by God’s Word. Please read those verses and ask yourself the question “Is that what I’m doing”. Or, do I want to make the guilty pay?

When we have this attitude it consumes us and drives us and colors our thinking regarding everything in life. All we can think about is revenge, and we might go about getting it in several ways– physical abuse, verbal abuse, condemning them, making demands on them, nagging at them, pouting, ignoring them, withholding needs, refusing to grant desires –in general, we just want to make life miserable for them. Read that list again and think about your attitude and consider the fact that you have no right to do what you’re doing. The following article by Dr. Paul Chappell sheds a lot of light on our subject:

George Atley was killed while serving with the Central African Mission. There were no witnesses, but the evidence indicates that Atley was confronted by a band of hostile tribesmen. He was carrying a fully loaded, 10-chamber Winchester rifle and had to choose either to shoot his attackers and run the risk of negating the work of the mission in that area, or not to defend himself and be killed. When his body was later found in a stream, it was evident that he had chosen the latter. Nearby lay his rifle-all ten chambers still loaded. He had made the supreme sacrifice, motivated by his burden for lost souls and his unswerving devotion to his Saviour.

What justice is there in the death of the innocent? What justice is there in good people with good intentions being persecuted or killed? Why is recompense or revenge not exacted on those evil workers in this world who would take the lives of others? Stories of innocent people dying at the hand of wicked people can stir anger in our hearts, yet as Paul taught the Thessalonians in 2 Thessalonians, God’s judgement is far greater than any we could exact.

Paul continues his letter in 2 Thessalonians 1:6-7 with the following comfort to the persecuted church, “Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels.” The word recompense Paul uses speaks of the judgement God will bring upon those who harm His children.

God knows what happens in your life. He sees the injustices, the hurt, and the pain. Don’t think that God is so great that He does not notice the small acts in your life. But just as God sees injustices, He calls you to ignore them, even forgive them.

Yours is not the place to exact judgement. That job belongs to God, and rightly so for He can exact judgement better than we ever could. Yet rather than worrying, stressing, plotting and planning, God calls you to rest, “And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels.”

When persecuted, rest. When unjustly treated, rest. When hated and despised, rest. Realize that seeking revenge hurts no one but yourself, and claim God’s promise of rest to those who trust His judgement.

Consider the words of preacher C.H. Spurgeon on the subject of persecution, “The good man has his enemies. He would not be like his Lord if he had not. If we were without enemies we might fear that we were not the friends of God, for the friendship of the world is enmity to God.”

Following God will bring persecution, yet God offers rest to those who walk with Him. Rather than pursuing revenge, enjoy the rest of God, knowing that His judgement will be exacted on evildoers in His time.

Think about it like this–the coming of Jesus will bring retribution to the adversaries, but it brings “rest” (relief, refreshment, and restoration) to the afflicted. In that assurance we can rest, rather than taking matters into our own hands and making matters worse. His coming will make all the wrongs right. Rest your weary soul on that precious promise.Think about it!

STAND AT THE BOW

September 7, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended : but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,  I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. “— Phip 3:13- 14

ALWAYS STAND at the bow! Leave the stern with its backward look and make for the bow. To spend time in sad review of past sins and failures is not to put them to the best account. Confess them, and believe that for Christ’s dear sake they are absolutely forgiven! Failure often provides the material for success, and our dead selves may become the stepping-stones to better things. Did not our Lord say to His disciples: “Sleep on now and take your rest”–the past is irreparable, but immediately added: “Arise, let us be going!”–the future is available. Therefore, leave the stern with its backward look, and make for the bow.

True, the sky before us may be dark with storm-clouds. The weather-prophets say that the world is shedding its old sanctions without replacing them with better ones; that seven civilizations have already passed, and we are to see the death of the eighth. Be it so, but they forget that God holds the stormy waters in the hollow of His hand; that Jesus walked the threatening billows to succour His friends. They forget that when the earth was without form and void, the Spirit of God brooded in the chaos and darkness, creating the heavens and earth. They cannot detect the voice of the Creator saying, “Behold, I make all things new!” Out of chaos is born the cosmos. Each age ends in travail, out of which a new age is born.

Look out to the vast circle of the horizon, and prepare for the new lands to be explored, the wonderful discoveries that await us, the great missions hidden in the future which are waiting to be fulfilled. Never doubt that the clouds will break. Never dream that wrong will triumph. Never count yourself God-forsaken or forgotten. The Master may seem to be asleep on His pillow, oblivious and uncaring, but His hand is on the helm. He guides your course. He rules the waves and they obey Him.

He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. Then are they glad because they be quiet; So He bringeth them in the haven of their desire. Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness! AMEN. — F B Meyer

UNDERSTANDING CHILDREN

April 30, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

I received an email from Bro. Kenneth, our assistant pastor, the other day that blessed my heart like no other in a long long time. As I read it to Bev we both were near tears –realizing that someone realized this. It was so good that I asked him to share his feelings with you this coming Sunday. It pertains to the importance of teaching teens.
The Bible puts a lot of emphasis on parents training their children. One of the most familiar verses is found in Ephesians 6:4,”–provoke not your children to wrath; but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”
Let me give you some advice about this. One of the first things you need to know about this is that children are sinners. They are not the sweet little innocent things you think they are. Maybe this story will help you understand.
I recently read about a precious little girl walked into a pet shop last Saturday (the day before Easter) and asked, “Excuthe me, thir, do you have any widdle bunny wabbits?”

The shopkeeper’s heart melted. He got down on his knee so that he was on her level, and said, “Do you want a widdle white wabbit or a thoft, fuffy bwack wabbit, or one like that widdle bwown wabbit over there?”

The little girl blushed, rocked on her heels, put her hands on her knees, leaned forward and replied, “I don’t weally fink my pyfon cares.”

Dear friend, we better be glad that children don’t grow physically to adult size in the first year or two–we would be in big trouble! Stop by the nursery sometime and watch the kids for a while. It just might be the eye-opening experience that you need. Those kiddos are selfish, tempermental, loud, angry, and very vocal about what they want. They will scream, yell, stomp their feet, push, pull hair, and do whatever they’re able to do, just to get their way. It reminds me of some churches! It is an amazing exhibition of a sinful nature manifesting itself. It actually reminds me of the behavior I see in people who are much older.

Do you want to know what’s wrong with the world? Watch the nursery–that will give you a clue. Some people grow older, but not wiser. We don’t learn how to love one another and live with one another until we are redeemed by Christ, reconcilied to God, indwelt by the Spirit, and educated in the Scriptures. Sadly, many aren’t there yet. Until a person matures spiritually they are a detriment to society.

LIVING WATER

September 6, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said , out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”–John 7:38

A river touches places of which its source knows nothing, and Jesus says if we have received of His fulness, however small the visible measure of our lives, out of us will flow the rivers that will bless to the uttermost parts of the earth. We have nothing to do with the outflow – “This is the work of God that ye believe. . . .” God rarely allows a soul to see how great a blessing he is.

A river is victoriously persistent, it overcomes all barriers. For a while it goes steadily on its course, then it comes to an obstacle and for a while it is baulked, but it soon makes a pathway round the obstacle. Or a river will drop out of sight for miles, and presently emerge again broader and grander than ever. You can see God using some lives, but into your life an obstacle has come and you do not seem to be of any use. Keep paying attention to the Source, and God will either take you round the obstacle or remove it. The river of the Spirit of God overcomes all obstacles. Never get your eyes on the obstacle or on the difficulty. The obstacle is a matter of indifference to the river which will flow steadily through you if you remember to keep right at the Source. Never allow anything to come between yourself and Jesus Christ, no emotion, or experience; nothing must keep you from the one great sovereign Source.

Think of the healing and far-flung rivers nursing themselves in our souls! God has been opening up marvellous truths to our minds, and every point He has opened up is an indication of the wider power of the river He will flow through us. If you believe in Jesus, you will find that God has nourished in you mighty torrents of blessing for others.—Oswald Chambers
