THE PRIVILEGE OF SERVING GOD

August 9, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”–Romans 12:1

Pastor Jack Graham said,”It seems like more and more today, I meet people who have a slot-machine religion. You know what I mean… they think of serving God like putting a quarter in a slot machine. So they volunteer at church, pull the lever, and wait and see if God will pay out.

Now you may hear that and think, “That’s preposterous! How could anyone believe something like that?!” But the truth is there’s an inkling of that feeling in all of us. It may not be a blatant as the example above, but we all have that little voice that comes from our flesh that says, “God is really lucky to have me on His team.”

But the Bible gives us a very different paradigm of thinking when it comes to serving God. Instead of elevating ourselves and thinking we’re really helping God out, the reality is that serving God is a privilege for those of us who are in Jesus Christ.

Give cheerfully. Serve humbly. You have nothing to offer God except what He’s already given you – a holy life. Exercise your divine privilege of serving Him every day and thank God for the wonderful blessing of being able to live for His glory!”

Considering all that God has done for us, it is indeed reasonable and a privilege that we should do as He commands. And we should do it without hesitation, reservation, question, or complaint. We should give our all to Him who gave heaven’s best for those who deserve nothing. If we are grateful for His grace we will.

STUFFED

November 24, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

“You’ve got to be kidding!”–That was my response to a headline that said,”Calculate Your Calories This Thanksgiving”. The writer was dead serious about this and had prepared a table showing the caloric consumption for several of our favorite Thanksgiving foods.
It’s bad enough that we have to put up with “Scrooge” at Christmas, we don’t need Calorie Counters at Thanksgiving! We could describe Thanksgiving in a lot of ways, such as the fellow who said it’s when the stuffing is moved from one turkey to another! That, of course, is another way of saying that it’s all about the food. I agree–it shouldn’t be that way, but we’re trying to be honest. Right?
Speaking of “stuffing”, did you know that it has quite a history behind it? I recently ran across this informative article by David Jeremiah:
The oldest references to stuffing are in ancient Roman cookbooks that talk about vegetables, herbs, spices, and cereal being combined and “stuffed” into chicken, rabbits, and pigs. Romans also added liver and brains to their stuffing. Stuffing has appeared in cookbooks ever since and was quite popular at Medieval banquets. The sensibilities of the Victorians resisted the word “stuffing,” substituting the more delicate word “dressing,” a term that caught on in the Southern United States.

The word “stuff” means to cram full. For example, after we’ve had our fill of turkey, beans, potatoes, rolls, cranberry sauce (and stuffing), we’ll lean back in our chairs and say, “I’m stuffed.”

Now, you can do with that what you will, but I’m convinced that some folks are too “spiritual” for their own good. They make themselves and everyone around them miserable. Here’s my advice, for what it’s worth,—enjoy the day! You are not a glutton just because you “stuff” yourself on appropriate occasions. Read your Bible–God taught His people to feast on occasion. So, He not only allows it, He expects it. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems to me that it can be an expression of gratitude to relish what God has graciouly provided. After all, how would the cook feel if you just picked at your food, consuming only a few bites? From my experience, it is far more likely to bring a smile, rather than a frown, to her face when you ask for a second helping. Don’t make yourself sick, but don’t let some stick-in -the-mud rob you of your joy. Remember that “the living God—giveth us richly all things to enjoy”.(1 Timothy 6:17). So, help yourself.
In these troubled times we’ve got more than enough things to make us sad without counting calories at Thanksgiving. Forget that nonsense–loosen your belt and get another piece of pie. Make the experience something the kids will enjoy and remember. From my heart to your house, Happy Thanksgiving! –Bro. Stone
PS “Pass the biscuits please!”

We bless the Lord, the just, the good, who fills our hearts with joy and food; who pours His blessing from the skies, and loads our days with rich supplies.
Isaac Watts

GOD’S WORD

August 8, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

Take the…sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God– Ephesians 6:17

Notice that the Bible, God’s Word, is called the sword “of the Spirit.” Not only is it a weapon, but it is a weapon forged by God himself.

This is why God’s Word is so powerful. Satan only retreats before the Almighty; he has never yet successfully advanced against the point of this sword. The devil is no match for the truth of God. His only hope is to convince you to lower your weapon.

But have you experienced its power to deliver from sin — worry, fear, envy, lust? Although our fallen minds can rationalize any sin, the Word of God cuts through our excuses without bending and delivers us from sin’s deceit and destruction.

And the Bible not only fends off attack, it delivers blows. God’s Word condemns sin, instructs us how to live, matures our foolish hearts, and reveals false motivations. The sword of the Spirit is the only offensive weapon that we are given in this spiritual warfare, but it is abundantly sufficient.

However, it is not a superstitious and mere presence of God’s Word that has overcoming power — it is not any help at all if it sits idle and untouched on your bedside table. It is the individual passages of Scripture—read, studied, memorized, and meditated upon—which parries the approaches of Satan.

When we wield God’s Word knowledgeably and with faith, we will find this fencing practice quickly yields astonishing and ground-gaining results in our lives. So, take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.–Baptist Bible Hour

THE FUNDAMENTALS

November 4, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

I just happened to notice the headline of an article pertaining to the Dallas Cowboys. Calm down–this isn’t about how I feel about the Cowboys, LOL. I just want to make a point. The headline said,”Phillips preaching fundamentalism”.
Having played sports and being somewhat of a fan (depending on who is playing), I understand how important fundamentals are. You simply can’t ignore them and be successful. Raw talent might make you look good on occasion, but that alone won’t make you a winner. The fundamentals are essential.
The question is this–considering the many years of training and experience they’ve had, how can it be that a professional athlete who is paid millions have a problem with the fundamentals? You understand poor performance when it is due to an injury or just a plain lack of ability, but forgetting the fundamentals is inexcusable. Those who are truly dedicated to the game don’t need lectures about the fundamentals–that’s where there focus is. The true “stars” are self-motivated, fully dedicated, full-time students of the game. They don’t over look the fundamentals.
Now, let’s make a spiritual application. After all, if Paul could use racing, wrestling, boxing, etc. as examples why can’t we do the same. Just as it is with sports, there are certain fundamentals that must be adhered to. We ignore them at our peril. Take spiritual growth for instance. It doesn’t just happen because you have been born again. In other words, it isn’t automatic. To mature we nourish ourself by feeding on God’s Word, breathe the fresh air of prayer, exercise ourself unto godliness, etc. We also need the benefits of fellowship with other Christians, so faithful church attendance is fundamental to spiritual maturity.
Here’s the bottom-line—a lot of Christians need to get back to “the fundamentals”! Looking good occasionally isn’t good enough. We ought to have a better “won-loss” record than that. That means we must get our focus on the fundamentals and commit ourselves to doing those things that are condusive to spiritual growth. We aren’t playing a game. We’re talking about life and the consequences of our conduct are of eternal siginificance. This means much more than winning the “Super-Bowl” or “World Series”. We’re talking about usefulness on earth and treasures in heaven that can never be taken away from us. Now, that’s something worthy of our attention and total devotion! Get back in the “game” and keep your focus on the fundamentals. At the Judgment Seat of Christ you will be glad you did. Think about it!

THE PLACE OF PRAYER

August 7, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”—Matthew 6:5–6

We ought to pray as though everything depended on prayer—it does! Although there are other important things to do, we can’t succeed at any of them if we refuse to pray. The daily devotional “Daily in the Word has this to say about the matter:

“Though there is certainly a place for public and corporate prayer, and I have been in some wonderful prayer meetings in my life, there is no substitute for personal private petitions to our Father in Heaven. The praying that we do in public can never carry the depth of emotion and feeling that our private prayers have. The Scottish pastor Thomas Brooks said, “The power of religion and godliness lives, thrives, or dies, as closet [private] prayer lives, thrives, or dies. Godliness never rises to a higher pitch than when men keep closest to their closets.”

Prayer—prevailing, powerful, Bible prayer—is a spiritual discipline. It requires an investment of time, energy and emotion. A few words in a Sunday school class or a church service are no substitute for meaningful and personal time spent with God. We need to make prayer a habit just as Jesus did. Again and again in Scripture we read that He separated Himself from His disciples to spend time with His Father in prayer. Often Jesus was extremely busy with the crowds pressing in to see Him and teaching and healing, so He began the day with prayer. “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed” (Mark 1:35). There is no more important priority that we have as believers than to spend time with God in prayer.”
