A WILD GOOSE CHASE

October 14, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

I guess the old saying “Truth is stranger than fiction” is really true. You couldn’t make some of this stuff up. Here’s an example, straight off the list of weird news for the day. The headline reads:” Man Rescued After Chasing Goose Into River”. Here’s the story–
A man in Wausau, Wis. was chasing a one-legged goose when he jumped into the frigid water of the Wisconsin River.I kid you not! The 40 year old man said he wanted “to catch the bird and roast it”, so he took off his shirt and shoes and took the plunge. Being overcome by the cold water he had to be rescued by firefighters. Then he was arrested on an outstanding warrant. The article ended with these words–“the goose is still on the loose!”
Now, as crazy as this sounds, there are many folks doing things even worse. They spend their life in pursuit of frivolous things and put themselves in harms way as a result. Their “goose” is pleasure, profit, power, popularity, etc., whatever they envision as bringing them delight. They plunge head-long into the chase without any regard of the danger. The thing they are pursuing might be well and good, in and of itself,(a lot of folks like roasted goose), but the pursuit itself is dangerous.
Many are distracted by their delights to the point that they neglect the most important things in life. They exhaust themselves, expending all their time and energy on things that are of no eternal value. A limited amount of recreation is fine and dandy, but not when it leads us into the deep water of danger. The Bible tells us to “seek those things which are above—Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”(Col. 3:1-2). Don’t waste your life on “a wild goose chase”. Think about it!

ALL FOR GOD

August 1, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“I will do all my pleasure.” Isaiah 46:10

The purpose of God cannot be frustrated. His holy mind can never be disappointed. His will is law. His counsel must stand. He is in one mind, and none can turn him. He takes pleasure in them that fear Him, and in them that hope in His mercy. He chose them to salvation in Jesus, according to the good pleasure of His will. He works in us to will, and to do, of His good pleasure. He will fulfill in us all the good pleasure of His goodness, and the work of faith with power. He is pleased to save His people with an everlasting salvation. He is pleased with our obedience to His precepts. It is our Father’s good pleasure that gives us the kingdom. He accomplishes the purposes of His will by angels; they are His ministers which do His pleasure; by men, good and bad; by devils; by Jesus Christ; the pleasure of the Lord prospers in His hand. For His pleasure all things are and were created; and he worketh all things after the counsel of His own will. Let us seek to be like-minded with our God; let us acquiese in all that pleases Him, and let us take pleasure in glorifying him. If God does His pleasure our best interests are safe.

God moves in a mysterious way,
His wonders to perform;
He plants His footsteps in the sea.
And rides upon the storm.
His power and wisdom will fulfil,
The utmost counsel of His will.–James Smith

WHAT’S RIGHT WITH THE CHURCH

October 12, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

We celebrated our 41st anniversary as a church on Sunday and, as expected, we had a great day! I want to thank all of those who helped and those who supported us with their attendance. If you missed it–well, “You missed it!” I was blessed and I hope the same can be said of all.
I get tired of hearing about what’s wrong with the church, and I suggest that you quit listening to the critics. We would all fare better if we thought more about what’s right with the church–if fact that is what I preached about. Maybe a review would be helpful. Here’s the six things I mentioned:
1.IT’S FOUNDED ON THE RIGHT FOUNDATION
2. IT FOLLOWS THE RIGHT BOOK
3. ITS FOCUS IS ON THE RIGHT PERSON
4. ITS FELLOWSHIP IS SWEET
5. IT’S FAITHFUL TO GOD’S PATTERN
6. ITS FUTURE IS IN THE RIGHT HANDS
Although we are far from perfect, these six facts give us reasons to rejoice. When you hear a critic you might mention these things—they can’t be said of ever group that calls itself a church. Think about it!

DIVINE DELIVERANCE

July 31, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

– – –the just shall come out of trouble. Proverbs 12:13

THE Lord’s people are justified by grace, through faith, in the righteousness of Jesus; and all who are thus justified and created anew, have immortal principles of holiness and justice implanted in their hearts, so that they hate sin, follow holiness, and walk uprightly. Sin has not dominion over them, nor will they be slaves to lust. They meet with many troubles, they have to pass through fire and water, but they shall come out into a wealthy place. They shall not perish in their affliction, for the Lord upholdeth them with His hand. Beloved, look beyond your present trials; remember if you suffer as a Christian, you suffer with Christ; and if you suffer, you shall also reign with Him. Your God is able to deliver; He has promised to do so; trust in Him without wavering; yield not to temptation; avoid the appearance of evil; and your God will bring you out of trouble. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your judgment as the noonday. You shall also forget your misery, or remember it as waters that pass away. Present troubles will end in everlasting peace.

Millions who now His throne surround,
Here sought relief, here mercy found;
The Lord dispell’d their gloomy fears,
Heal’d all their wounds, and dried their tears;
And thou shalt also mercy find,
For God is faithful, just, and kind.–James Smith

SINKING SAND

September 30, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

I just read the headline–“Jersey Village Sinks 2 Inches Per Year”. Since I live nearby, that got my attention. The article went on to say, “A sprawling area of Harris County is gradually subsiding, but the points in Jersey Village are sinking fastest. The area is roughly—18 miles by 18 miles”.
Being from Missouri, I’m very familiar with sink-holes, but an area this large is mind-boggling. I sure wouldn’t want to build a house in that area. That is sad news for a lot of people, but there is something that troubles me a lot more than that. This story is a fit illustration of what is happening in a lot of lives. They are going down, down, down.
I’ve often said that backsliding is more like a slow leak than a blow-out, and I believe that is true. It generally happens so slowly that people aren’t aware of the danger–until things come crashing down!
It is heart breaking to watch people get further and further away from God. You know it’s just a matter of time until they are swallowed up by the pit of their own making. I’ve seen it happen many times. I’ve watched as some of the most dedicated people I’ve ever known drifted away from God until they lost all.
Maybe this would be a good time for all of us to examine ourselves. It just might be that little by little your life has been going in a downward direction—your love has grown cold, your joy has faded, your peace has evaporated, your faith has shrunk, your duties are being neglected, etc. If that’s the case it’s time to turn things around and get back on solid ground in your relationship with God. Think about it.
