NO FRIENDS?

June 13, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly- – -” Prov. 18:24

Over and over I hear people complain about not having any friends. My response is a question–“Do you assume any responsibility for it?” You should. To have a friend you “must” be a friend. But first you need to understand what friendship is.

Someone said, ” Friendship is a principle of mutual interchange and mutual sacrifice. There can be no onesidedness, no selfish engrossment, no taking without giving. Selfishness is the death of social reciprocity and sympathy.” I mention this because a lot of folks don’t understand. They don’t actually want a friendship. When they talk about wanting a friend, what they actually mean is that they want someone to fawn over them, make them feel good, and do them favors. They want a benefactor, not a friend. They want it to be all get and no give. They want to be cherished without any contribution on their part. They want to be blessed without being a blessing. In other words —-“Bless me, but don’t bother me. Leave me alone unless you are helping me”. That’s not friendship! And that’s why you don’t have any friends.

You should want friends. Being social beings we all need friends, so it is well and good to desire them. We need one another, but that need will never be met unless you get concerned about meeting the needs of others. Wait a minute— Isn’t that exactly what every Christian ought to be doing? As Paul said, “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.”(Phil. 2:4). Do that and you will have all the friends you need. One last word of advice—I’ve discoverd that it is better to have a few true friends than to have a thousand so-called friends. Don’t confuse friendship with popularity.

LEARNING TO LIVE

January 13, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

I recently heard a Christian radio broadcast that used the tag line, “Where the learning is for the living.” I don’t remember tha name of the broadcast or anything else about it, but those words stuck in my mind–that thought has long been in my heart. That’s the way it should be. We are to be “doers of the word and not hearers only”(James 1:22). If we aren’t living what we’re learning what’s the sense in knowing?   Every week millions of people go off to church to be taught God’s Word. Every week teachers stand before their classes dispensing information from the Bible, but very little of the learning ever translates into living. I guess you could call that academics without action or discipleship without duty. To be brutally honest you could call it sin. The bottom line is that too many students never become servants.   One of the main reasons for this is that most teachers don’t put any emphasis on it. They are content with just dispensing the information. If they can get a few kids to memorize a few verses they feel they’ve done an outstanding job. Really?   It seems strange that churches have all kinds of activities for kids and teens and yet never teach them to serve. Then they wonder why they don’t get involved when they are older. Fun and games are fine to an extent, but our young people need to be taught to serve–to put their lesson into shoe leather–to take what they’ve learned and do something of practical value with it. There’s a ton of things young people could do that would be of great help if only they were guided in the right direction. Our nursing homes are filled with people who would be delighted to have someone visit them. They especially enjoy young folks.   But this problem goes way beyond children and teens, it’s a problem with all age groups. Many adults never see the need to do something that is needed. At least they don’t see the need of them doing it! They come, sit, listen, and leave without ever getting involved. Why is it that classes meet every week for the sake of doing nothing more than learning? Why is it that they are given no opportunity or challenge to get involved? Why doesn’t every class have some sort of ministry or project? Why are teachers content with their people being content? Why do we spend so much time and money on social activities and none on service related things?   It’s a sad thing to see a class of church members sitting in church week after week with a Bible in their hand and a head full of knowledge, and no desire to minister to others. It’s all the more sickening to hear them say,”I can’t wait until I retire so I can do the things I enjoy”, without any intent of ever serving God. It all gets back to where we started–“learning is for living”. Why in the world do we need to know any more than we know if we don’t put it to use in Christian service? Sometimes I think we would be better off to cancel the class and take to the streets, passing out tracts, visiting the sick in the hospitals and the elderly in the nursing homes, etc. What’s the learning for if it’s not for the living? THINK ABOUT IT!

FEW DAYS AND FULL OF TROUBLE

June 12, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.”–Job 14:1
This describes life on planet earth. Of all that might be said, only two things are mentioned— life is of “few days” and “full of trouble”. He speaks of duration and difficulties, brevity and burdens. Life is short and a struggle, uncertain and unpleasant. We are foolish to expect it to be otherwise. A fallen world results in life being of few days and full of trouble. And it is getting progressively worse. Still we are expected to do our duty with delight. Although suffering greatly we are to serve faithfully. Although the road is rough we are required to “rejoice in the Lord alway”(Phil.4:4).

When he says life is “full of trouble” we all agree– if not now then later. There is trouble of all sorts and sizes in all seasons of life. Sin brought a curse upon the earth and it brings disease, difficulty, and death. Thus there is dread and despair. Seeing that it gets worse with the passing of time, who would want to live forever? At some point you would reach a breaking point. So, thank God it is but a “few days”. And it is but a few days whether you die at 9 or 90. Compared to eternity we are here but for a moment. For the righteous death shall be a delight, for “the just shall come out of trouble”(Prov. 30:5).

Your troubles might be terrible but they are temporary–“but for a moment” and transforming–working “for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory”.(2 Cor. 4:17). For the child of God the best is always yet to come! When your health and wealth is gone your inheritance awaits. When the storm clouds of sorrow overwhelm you, joy comes in the morning. The best will have, at long last, come and the burdens will go. Until that day appointed comes let us “wait” as Job did (Job 14:14)— ever mindful, in good times or bad, the best is yet to come.

HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM!

January 11, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

I moved to Houston twenty-two years ago and I love being in the place where God wants me to be, but I could not be more ashamed of our city. I just read an article about the fact that the largest abortion clinic in our nation is being opened here (you can read the article by clicking on this link: http://cnsnews.com/news/article/59334. It refers to the clinic as an “Abortion Super Center”. It says,” Planned Parenthood is renovating a former bank, turning it into a 78,000 square foot facility that will include a surgicial wing equipped to provide late-term abortions.” What a shame!   Houston should be called the new sin city. Just last month Houston elected the first lesbian (Annise Parker) to hold the office of mayor in a major U.S. city. Before that, Elena Marsh, the chairwoman for Planned Parenthood of America, held the position of Health and Environmental Policy for the mayor’s office. Houston, we have a problem!   Add to this the fact that the most popular false teacher in America is located in Houston and I would say we have a big problem! Joel Osteen prayed at the inauguration of Parker and he actually thanked God for putting her in that postion and for giving her “supernatural wisdom”. That’s as crazy as it gets. Of course this is the same man who refuses to use the word sin in reference to homosexuality. To think that anyone calling themself a Christian would call this man their pastor amazes me. Houston, we have a problem!    As Christians we need to pray for our city, do all we can to win folks to Christ, and vote for godly leaders. That is the only solution to our problem.

ALL FOR GOOD

June 11, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“ And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.(Rom 8:28)

How wide is this assertion of the Apostle Paul! He does not say, “We know that some things,” or “most things,” or “joyous things,” but “ALL things.” From the minutest to the most momentous; from the humblest event in daily providence to the great crisis hours in grace.

And all things “work’—they are working; not all things have worked, or shall work; but it is a present operation.

At this very moment, when some voice may be saying, “Thy judgments are a great deep,” the angels above, who are watching the development of the great plan, are with folded wings exclaiming, “The Lord is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.” (Ps. 145:17)

And then all things “work together.” It is a beautiful blending. Many different colors, in themselves raw and unsightly, are required in order to weave the harmonious pattern.

Many separate tones and notes of music, even discords and dissonances, are required to make up the harmonious anthem.

Many separate wheels and joints are required to make the piece of machinery. Take a thread separately, or a note separately, or a wheel or a tooth of a wheel separately, and there may be neither use nor beauty discernible.

But complete the web, combine the notes, put together the separate parts of steel and iron, and you see how perfect and symmetrical is the result. Here is the lesson for faith: “What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter.— John Macduff

In one thousand trials it is not five hundred of them that work for the believer’s good, but nine hundred and ninety-nine of them, and one beside.—George Mueller

You could say, all things work together for good all the time all because of God for all those who those who love God with all their heart. Have you given Him your “all”? —- HDS
