MORNING MANNA         1/2/20

January 2, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.” –James 4:13-15
The Bible repeatedly reminds us how transient life is. We are told that it is like a shadow, a step, grass and flowers that wither and die, a breath, a few years, and a few days. Over and over again God impresses upon our heart that we are here only for a short time. Time is fleeting, life is short, eternity awaits. Today we walk upon the grass, but someday we shall lie beneath it. Today we live in the warmth of the sun shine, tomorrow we will be buried in the cold dark soil.

As much as we would like to make our life meaningful and our memory pleasant, all earthly signs of our presence will eventually vanish. Only what’s done for Christ will prove of eternal value. As Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847) said, ” The children who come after us will tread upon our graves. They will weep for us for a few days. They will talk of us a few months. They will remember us a few years. Then our memory shall disappear from the face of the earth, and not a tongue shall be found to recall it!”. He was right.

That fact should cause us to make the best possible use of our time here on earth. When all is said and done we shall be done with it all, and it shall be done with us. The only thing that shall remain is that which is laid up in heaven. We are all moving toward eternity and know not what moment shall be our last. So let’s spend our life on things that last. Whether we are serving or sleeping, working, worshiping or whatever, let it all be done for the glory of God, out of love, and with joy, and it shall not be wasted. -HDS

MORNING MANNA           1/1/20

January 1, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

Would you believe me if I said “I know your future”? That would seem to contradict what yesterday’s article said about “An Unknown Future”. But both statements are true. In His great wisdom and love, God made it so that we can’t know what will happen tomorrow. Thanks God for that! But that doesn’t mean we can’t know anything about the future. Although there are no prophets today and the events of tomorrow are hidden from our view, there are some things we can know the future. And what we know can help us to deal with what we don’t know. So here’s what I know about the future – yours and mine.
— We will reap what we sow. For every effect there is a cause. Choices have consequences. God established the universal immutable law of sowing and reaping. That includes good as well as bad. So in a very real sense we each determine much of what happens to us. If we are wise we will sow seeds of righteousness.

— God controls everything all the time. He either appoints or allows everything that happens. In other words, providence shall prevail. So as you look to the days ahead, regardless of how things appear, you can rest assured that God is in control.

— God never changes. Rest assured there will be many things that will change in your life during this upcoming year. The one exception is God. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever!

— Our purpose never changes. Regardless of our circumstances, our chief purpose in life is to glorify God.

— We all fail at times. Fortunately failure isn’t final. With God recovery is possible. We might fall down or get knocked down, but “Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.” – Psa. 37:24

— Others will be watching and affected by what they see. We don’t have the right to not live right. As Christians we are the light of the world and the salt of the earth.

— People will disappoint us, and we will disappoint them. Since we are all imperfect we know this is to be expected. So we must be prepared to deal with our difference and live peaceable with one another.

— For unbelievers, the worst is yet to come. Prospering greatly in life some assume all is well and that they have no need of God. But, the fact is, the very worst thing imaginable awaits them. No one sins successfully. There is a pay day someday! And unbelievers will suffer eternal punishment.

— For believers, the best is yet to come. Sometimes the best people suffer the worst problems. The good news is that for God’s children the best is yet to come. God will dry every tear, remove every pain, explain every mystery, answer every question, and comfort every troubled soul. We will enter into the presence of the Lord and the fulness of our inheritance as joint heirs with Jesus Christ!

Life is difficult for everyone, but imagine how much worse it would be if we didn’t know these things. Faith enables us to face the future without fear. So a knowledge of these facts, upon which our faith is based, is essential. Knowing God’s Word is true, His promises are sure, and His character never changes gives us a firm faith that He will cause all things to work together for good as He tells us in Rom. 8:28. Now knowing these things I pray you will live courageously throughout the new year. He who brought you to it will get you through it! – HDS

JOSEPH’S JOB

Matt. 1:18-25
Someone called Joseph “the unsung hero of Christmas”. While opinions may vary one thing is for certain, he is not your “average Joe”. He was a man of great character. Sadly, greatness is not always recognized and that seems to be the case with Joseph. Although he is a wonderful example of the kind of person God uses he seldom gets the attention he deserves. But, out of all the men on earth God chose Joseph to be a father to His Son. And there was good reason for it. From our text we see four things that helps us understand why.
HIS DISCOVERY – VS. 18
Can you imagine Joseph’s shock when he discovered that Mary was pregnant. That no doubt was devastating news and difficult to deal with. Think about the questions he must have had. You could say that this serves as a commentary on the harsh reality of life. Things don’t always happen the way we plan or prefer. Sometimes our dreams turn into nightmares.
HIS DILEMMA – vs. 19-25
Rather than stoning her to death Joseph reasoned that he would give her a bill of divorcement (as allowed in Deut. 24:1). Not wanting to harm or embarrass her, he decided to deal with the matter privately. But as he reasoned God gave him a revelation that changed everything. It is a good thing that Joseph didn’t just react without thinking, or do what some men would have done.
HIS DECISION – vs. 24
After being armed with the facts Joseph made the wise choice – a true measure of his character. He and Mary were properly married. That tells us that Joseph was willing to subject himself to the scorn of others who did not understand. He did so because he loved Mary and wanted to please God. Those are motivating factors that should shape all the decisions we make in life.
HIS DEDICATION – vs. 25
Joseph’s dedication was revealed by his abstinence, due to the fact that he knew she was to be a virgin. It was also revealed by his announcement when he said, “called his name Jesus”. That was an act of obedience, courage, faith, and great importance. What a wonderful story – God using a humble carpenter to carry out His heavenly mission! That ought to challenge all of us. The fact is that God can and will use you also if you are willing to comply to His plan for your life. That’s what true greatness is all about. Joseph possessed the qualities that God desires for all of us. He was compassionate, prudent, obedient, courageous, disciplined, faithful, and committed. Are you? God’s plan for you is much different than Joseph’s job, but it is still of great importance. Whatever it is it’s the wisest course you could take. – HDS

MORNING MANNA          12/ 26 /19

December 26, 2019 By Pastor David Stone

“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” – Luke 19:10

Here we see a great subject – “the Son of man”. We often hear people speak of Christ as “the Son of God”, as well we should, but seldom do we hear Him called “the Son of man“. It’s as though they think it is a title unbecoming of the Lord. However, since this is the title He chose for Himself, and the fact that it is used about 78 times in the Gospels, it is perfectly suitable. But it’s more than just suitable, it is essential to understanding Christ. It is a reference to His humanity. It pictures Him as our near kinsman, our Redeemer. As someone said, “The Son of God became the Son of man that the sons of men might become the sons of God”!

Here we see a glorious statement – “is come”. Thank God He did! From the fall of man one prophet after another had proclaimed the promise that the Messiah would come. But one generation after another heard the message and went to the grave without seeing His arrival. But then “when the fulness of time was come, God sent forth his Son” ( Gal. 4:4-5). Not until then could it finally be said, “the Son of man is come“. Those are words God’s people had longed to hear. These are words that brought hope to the hopeless, confirmed the message of John the Baptist, frightened kings, and infuriated the devil. They are words that describe Christmas. His birth was according to the promise, by means of a virgin, at the appointed time, in the designated place, celebrated by angels, attended by shepherds, and the first step in our Lord’s journey to Calvary.

Here we see a gracious service – “to seek and to save that which was lost”. From beginning to the end, salvation is of the Lord and by grace. Jesus didn’t come to behold the seven wonders of the world, reform governments, start welfare programs, or heal man’s diseases. He came to meet man’s greatest need – “to seek and to save that which was lost”. Since all have sinned this makes His coming of great importance to everyone. As sinners we are spiritually dead, separated from God, and condemned already. Yet the “Son of man” came to save us. That is a love story without equal – the greatest story ever told. – HDS

MORNING MANNA           12/24/19

December 24, 2019 By Pastor David Stone

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” – Eph. 2:8-9

Christmas is a time when much thought is given to giving  and getting gifts. But for some it would be far better if they thought about getting a gift for themselves. I’m not talking about being selfish or ignoring others. I’m speaking about their need of getting what they need most – receiving the gift of eternal life, provided by Christ. That’s the greatest gift possible.

Sadly, some people are deceived by the devil, distracted by their duties, and deluded by their desires. They think the greatest joy is found in getting what they want, even though it is of no spiritual benefit or eternal value – so they ignore what they need. They don’t realize that getting what they want won’t provide any lasting satisfaction.

Christ alone can meet our deepest need and provide perfect peace and everlasting joy. That’s what prompted Paul to say, “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift” ( 2 Cor. 9:15). There are many wonders in the world, but the most wonderful thing of all is God’s gift of eternal life through the death of His own dear Son. It benefits us now and for eternity, and it is free! What works couldn’t win, efforts can’t ensure, goodness can’t gain, prayers can’t provide, and sincerity can’t secure, God’s grace gives!

Have you received this glorious gift? By an act of simple child-like faith you could do so today. The most precious present possible is just waiting for you to receive. Doing so would make this the greatest day of your life. It’s either that or be destroyed due to your doubt. Trust Jesus today! – HDS
