PRESS ON

March 3, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.“–Phil. 3:14

I love the old song “He’ll Understand and Say Well Done”. It speaks of coming to “the end of my journey. Weary of life, and the battle is won:“. It reminds us that we can leave this old world knowing that, if we’ve given the best of our service, the Lord will “understand and say well done”. That being the case, let us not spend our days depressed and complaining that it’s too difficult or too short. Let us be thankful for the life we’ve had and what time we might have left, and thrilled that the best is yet to come. May God help us to have the attitude of Paul when he wrote 2 Tim. 4:6-7 “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:”

Some of you are tired, weary, and ready to go home, but God isn’t through with you–press on! Some of you are hurting and fearful of what might lie ahead, but you don’t know the future, so –press on! Some of you feel discouraged because you can no longer do what you used to do, but you can do something, so –press on, even if it is at a snail’s pace. Some of you feel your efforts are in vain and a waste of time, but it is God who gives the increase–press on! Keep sowing and watering, and leave the results with God. Some of you feel defeated, as though you have failed, because there is yet so much to do, but –press on! You never know what yet might happen– press on! It’s always too soon to quit. The fact that you are still here is evidence that you are needed. Press on! If you can’t do anything else, be a cheer leader urging others to press on! He is no failure who can say he has faithfully finished his course. God demands no more from us. —HDS

PREACHING YOUR OWN FUNERAL

March 3, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.”–Heb. 11:4

Many people have planned their own funeral, but perhaps the most notable was Winston Churchill, who gave clear instructions for what he wantd. There were stately hymns in St. Paul’s Cathedral and an impressive liturgy. When they said the benediction, he had arranged for a bugler high in the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral on one side to play Taps, the universal signal that the day is over.

But when that was finished, there was a long pause and then a bugler on the other side played Reveille, the signal of a new day beginning. It was Churchill’s way of communicating that while we say “good night” here, it’s “good morning” up there. That’s impressive, but there is something even more so.

While most of us don’t actually plan our funeral, there is a sense in which we all preach our own funeral sermon. Although our lifeless body lies beneath the sod we speak loud and clear from the grave. What we are speaks much more powerfully than what anyone could say about us after we are gone. The manner of our life is our message to the world. We need to think about what it says. Will it convey Christ, testify to your trust in Him, picture peace, hold hope?

They will bury your body, but your influence will live on. Like an invisible hand, the touch of your life will continue to guide those left behind. Although your voice has been silenced by the cold hand of death you will speak from the grave. No doubt some preacher will speak about you, friends and family might eulogize you, but it is what you say that matters the most. And remember, it shall be an indelible message, written in stone as it were. There will be no second chances, revisions, or do-overs. What’s done will be done. All the flowery phrases, exaggerated stories, and glowing compliments that put you in the best possible light will never erase the record of a life ill-spent. It is the story of your life, for good or bad, that matters most. It is the truth about you. What will it be?

Looking back over the years, I still receive instruction and inspiration from dear souls who have gone before. The mere mention of their name tells their story over again. It is more than a precious memory, it is a lesson on living. A life well-lived is a gift that keeps on giving long after the life has ceased. It is a way of out living yourself. So. what shall your story be? Think about it! –HDS

MAKE UP YOUR MIND

February 10, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“…choose you this day whom ye will serve….as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. ”—Joshua 24: 15 ( read vs.22- 28)

John Henry Jowett wrote, Here was a definite decision. Our peril is that we spend our life in wavering and we never decide. We are like a jury which is always hearing evidence and never gives a verdict. We do much thinking, but we never make up our minds. We let our eyes wander over many things, but we make no choice. Life has no crisis, no culmination.

Now people who never decide spend their days in hoping to do so. But this kind of life becomes a vagrancy and not a noble and illumined crusade. We drift through our days, we do not steer, and we never arrive at any rich and stately haven.

It is therefore vitally wise to “make a vow unto the Lord.” It is good to pull our loose thinkings together and to “gird up the loins of the mind.” Let a man, at some definite place, and at some definite moment, make the supreme choice of his life.”

James 1:8 says, “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”  He is like the Missouri Mule that starved to death while standing between two hay stacks–because he couldn’t make up his mind which one to eat from! I’ve met people like that. Many year ago a young married man surrendered to preach under my ministry in Missouri and his excitement was evident, but he could never settle on exactly what to do. One week he was going to be the next Billy Graham, the next week a pastor, and the next a missionary, etc. He seemed to have a new idea every week. That went on and on until finally he ended up getting a divorce and wasting his life. Dear friend there is great peace in knowing what you ought to do and deciding to do it. It’s time to act. As Joshua said, “choose you this day whom ye will serve“.— HDS

DODGING DISTRACTIONS

February 6, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith;…”–Heb. 12:2

It was a dark night and we are camped on a small lake in the middle of nowhere in East Texas. As we prepared for bed my youngest son commented on the vast number of stars. He had no idea that there were so many! Then it dawned on me that he had never viewed the stars on a clear night away from the ambient light of the big city. It was a shocking revelation for him. That reminded me of something very important. We can see more when there are no distractions! The stars are there whether we see them or not, but we see their beauty and benefit from their guidance only if our view is unobstructed. The same could be said in regards to God’s presence and promises.

We live in a world of many distractions and if we aren’t careful we will focus on the wrong things. To live a victorious life we must keep “Looking unto Jesus” (Heb. 12:2). As we “consider Him” (Heb. 12:3) we are enabled to push on through difficulties and disappointments. Therefore we must not allow ourselves to be distracted. We must get away, best we can, from the things of the world that dim our vision of Christ.

Keep in mind that distractions are not, in and of themselves, bad things. The city lights serve a good and useful purpose, but they can also hide the stars. Even so, sinless things can become sinful if we allow them to distract us from the more important things in life. The greatest enemy of the best is usually something good rather than something bad. Things that, in and of themselves, are not sinful can nevertheless become a weight that slows us down, holds us back, and keeps us from our goal. They become distractions that are deadly! Just as many accidents are caused by “rubber-necking” many lives are ruined by being focured on the wrong things. A. W. Tozer wrote, “Among the enemies to devotion none is so harmful as distractions. ….Distractions must be conquered or they will conquer us.”  To be safe we must turn our eyes upon Jesus and keep them there.–HDS

IT’S ALRIGHT

February 6, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“And in nothing terrified by your adversaries.“– Phil. 1:28

I was sitting in my office at my desk. Across from me sat a man I loved dearly. As we talked about him having terminal cancer he said, with a smile on his face, “God is God and He is going to do what He wants to do”. Then the smile broadened and he added, “And that’s alright”.

Many things about that man, a deacon/music director, had impressed me, but never anything quite like this. Seeing the greatness of his faith and calmness of spirit left a deep impression on me. It made me wonder, however, “Why should we think that to be out of the ordinary for a Christian?” Should that not be every believers attitude? Do we not serve the same God and have the same hope he had? Did not Paul say, “to die is gain“(Phil. 1:21)? Would it not be “far better” to “depart, and to be with Christ” (Phil. 1:23)? Has God ever been unfair or made a mistake? Is not the grave but the gate to glory?

Dear friend we are all moving toward that day when we shall make our last move and enter into the presence of the Lord! As strange as it might seem to unbelievers, the best day of a Christian’s life is his last day. It is at that point that every problem will be solved, every pain will be removed, and every enemy banished. What we leave and what we receive will make death gain for every child of God. Our exit here will be our entrance into the presence of the Lord.

Naturally we all have question. Death is something we’ve never experienced before, plus there is the concern for others factor. We wonder about their welfare. Even when we know our loved ones are saved and that we shall be reunited it doesn’t always take away the anxiety. I doubt that any of us knows exactly how we would deal with the news that we are about to die. But if you are truly saved I suspect that you will do better than you think. I say that because God’s grace is sufficient for any situation. So while we might mourn, let us never murmur! The best is yet to come! Until that day comes let us believe, as Paul, that “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (Phil. 4:13)– HDS
