GOOD FOR EVIL

April 5, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”–Rom. 12:21

Question– “Can anything enter your life without God causing it or allowing it?” You know the answer–“Absolutely not!” Whether it is good or bad God either makes it happen or lets it happen. He is always in control. However, sometimes during a time of disappointment or difficulty we forget that. When someone mistreats us we tend to complain. We can’t imagine it being a part of God’s plan. We act as though God shouldn’t allow it or couldn’t prevent it, nor use it for good. We convince ourselves that we are justified in getting bitter, withholding forgiveness, and taking revenge. We use it as an excuse for not being content, not being thankful in all things, and not rejoicing always as the Bible commands. But God doesn’t let us off the hook. We are not excused from duty because it is difficult, nor relieved of our responsibility because of another person’s evil.

If ever there was an example of how we should respond to those who abuse us it is Joseph. Think about the all he suffered at the hand of his brothers, yet he said to them, “it was not you that sent me hither, but God–“(Gen 45:8),”...ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good“( Gen. 50:20). That’s amazing! And God expects us to have the same attitude. He says, “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good” (Rom. 12:21). So how are you doing at that? Be honest–God knows, and it probably shows. Some folks don’t even return good with good, let alone good for evil. They are unloving and unkind, yet we are to love them anyway.

Chances are someone has done you wrong, hurt you deeply. The question isn’t “what are they going to do?”, but “how will you respond?” Scripturally or sinfully? If you want God to use the evil for good you must overcome the evil with good. You can’t solve every problem or cure every ill, but with God’s help you can manage it. You can’t get out of it, but you can get through it, and get something from it. Life isn’t always the way we want it to be, nor as it should be, but we can do right regardless of the wrong, and it pays great dividends.–HDS

CHANGED

April 4, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. “–2 Cor. 3:18

I met Major Ian Thomas in Jackson, Tn. more than 40 years ago and was greatly impressed. You can check out his biography on Wikipedia and I suspect you will be impressed also. I met him at a time in my life when I was running myself ragged trying to serve the Lord and in great need of learning what he speaks about in the following comments.

After surrendering to preach at the age of 15 he later started a “slum club” down in the East End of London “out of a sheer desire to win souls, to go out and get them. I was a windmill of activity until, at the age of nineteen, every moment of my day was packed tight with doing things. Thus by the age of nineteen, I had been reduced to a state of complete exhaustion spiritually, until I felt that there was no point going on.” Listen carefully to what he says next, “Then, one night in November, that year, just at midnight, I got down on my knees before God, and I just wept in sheer despair. I said, ‘With all my heart I have wanted to serve Thee. I have tried to my uttermost and I am a hopeless failure.’ That night things happened. The Lord seemed to make plain to me that night, through my tears of bitterness: ‘You see, for seven years, with utmost sincerity, you have been trying to live for Me, on My behalf, the life that I have been waiting for seven years to live through you.'” Thomas later reflected: “I got up the next morning to an entirely different Christian life, but I want to emphasize this: I had not received one iota more than I had already had for seven years!”

Now here’s the quote I want you to remember, “Godliness is not the consequence of your capacity to imitate God but the consequence of His capacity to reproduce Himself in you. It is not self-righteousness but Christ-righteousness, the righteousness that is by faith—a faith that by renewed dependence upon God releases His divine action to restore the marred image of the invisible God.”

It is for that very reason that I continue to say, The Christian life is the life of Christ reproduced in the child of God, by the Spirit of God who conforms him to the Word of God, enabling him to live for the glory of God. It is not what we do for God, but what He does in us that that makes the difference. He is the change agent! It is He who enables us to say, “For to me to live is Christ…“ ( Phil. 1:21).–HDS

PROTECTED

April 3, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them: “– Exodus 14:19

There are some folks who are always searching for something more, rather than enjoying what they have or where they are. They are the ones who go through life trying to create doors of opportunity rather than wait on God to open them. They are always busy but forever discontent. It would do them good to realize that just as the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord so are the stops! Our text gives us a good example of this.

J. R. Miller commented: “It is not always guidance that we most need. Sometimes we must stand still, with danger all around us, and then God goes behind us to shelter us. He always suits himself to our need. When we require guidance—he leads us. But when we need protection—he puts himself between us and the danger.

There is something very striking in this picture the divine presence moving from before, and becoming a wall between Israel and their enemies. There are some mother-birds, storks for instance, which cover their young with their own body in time of peril, to shield them, receiving the dart themselves. Human love often interposes itself as a shield to protect its own. On the cross, Jesus bared his bosom to receive the storm of wrath—that on his people no blast of the awful tempest might strike!

But not only does Christ put himself between us and our sins; he puts himself also between us and danger. The Lord God is our shield. Many of our dangers come upon us from behind. They are stealthy, insidious, assaulting us when we are unaware of their nearness. The tempter is cunning and shrewd. He does not meet us full-front. It is a comfort to know that Christ comes behind us—when it is there we need the protection.”

The will of God is our only safe place. If we lag behind when we should be following, or if we run ahead when we should be waiting, we endanger ourselves. God told Israel to “stand still”. Had they ignored the command and kept going they would have destroyed themselves. Think about it! –HDS

SWEET THOUGHTS

April 3, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD”.–Psalm 104:34

Let’s face it, a great many people don’t think much or often of the Lord. They are so self-centered that they can think of nothing but themselves–whether their delights or their difficulties it all centers on them. Of course there are those who on occasion give thought to the Lord, even if but a moment, when a crisis comes. But, even among those who profess to know and love Him many give little thought to Him. The reasons for their failure are many– worldly care, fleshly desires, trials and tribulation, fear, bitterness, etc. Although they do not deny Him, He is crowed out of their mind.

The Psalmist had better things to do. He mediated on the Lord. Long before Paul said, “If ye be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God” (Col. 3:1) the Psalmist made it a practice to do so. He pitched his mental tent on holy ground and meditated on the Lord–and it made him “glad“. It would do the same for us!

Considering His greatness how can we not think of Him? Nothing more glorious can be found. As the very first verse says, “Bless the LORD, O my soul, O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty”. Although he goes on there is no need to say more than that. Read it if you will and behold His greatness, but we should need no more than the experience of our own conversion to say ” I think of my blessed Redeemer, I think of Him all the day long”. Indeed, and when we do that such gladness will flood our heart that we will go on to say, ” I sing, for I cannot be silent; His love is the theme of my song”. Isn’t that exactly what we see in this Psalm–“I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.” (vs. 33).

If you are having a miserable day, regardless of the cause, there is help to be found by shifting your focus away from the sordid things of this world to Christ who is seated at the Father’s right hand. Peter tell us He is precious to those who believe, so turn your eyes upon Him rather than your problems. “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (Heb. 4:16). You can do what you will but I’m telling you to do what you must to have peace and joy–regardless of circumstances.–HDS

SUPERNATURAL LOVE

March 28, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. “–1 Corinthians 13:13

We hear it said, “You can be whatever you want to be.” That advice should have these two words added: “within reason.” Try as they might, some people will never become Olympic athletes, astronauts, concert violinists, or Arctic explorers. They may be too old or too young, lack the necessary ability, or have started too late in life. No amount of desire or willpower can overcome some obstacles in life.

The same is true when it comes to manifesting love of a supernatural quality. It is not part of man’s natural constitution to love selflessly, sacrificially, or unconditionally. That doesn’t mean it never happens in the natural world. It simply means it is contrary, in the long run, to man’s self-centered motivation. We cannot  naturally  love like God, but we can  supernaturally  love like God. Paul writes that, by the indwelling Spirit of God, we can manifest God-like love: “The fruit of the Spirit is love . …” (Galatians 5:22). If God is love, and God indwells us by His Spirit, we can love as He loves.

Ask God to empower you with His Spirit daily to display the love of God to everyone you meet.(Turning Point)

Strange, we fail at that which is “the greatest” and then act as though we don’t have the slightest problem, nothing of which to repent. Make no mistake about it, a failure to love others is a major breakdown in our life and deserves our immediate attention. We are never more like Jesus than we are when we love others unconditionally as He loved us.–HDS
