MORNING MANNA         10-28-21

REDEEM THE TIME

“Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”- Eph. 5:16

Having just celebrated my eightieth birthday I don’t think I’ll ever use the well known phrase “killing time” again. As someone said, “Men talk of killing time, while time quietly kills them”. Point is, time is passing and I don’t want to waste it. Life is a gift from God and should be used for God.

We have only one life and how we spend it is of great importance. Sadly many go from day to day in a hap-hazzard way that results in a mis-spent life – or as the old song says, “Wasted years”. And it’s something that can’t be undone. What we do with our lives matters for time and eternity. Used wisely your life is an investment that pays eternal dividends. The question is “How will you spend it?”

The answer to that question is found in what you consider to be important – what you value. So, what is it? Pleasure? Possessions? Power? Popularity? We are all faced with a choice and if we are to get it right we must forget about what we feel and discover what is actually important. But, due to our tendency to please ourselves, that’s not always easy. If we are to get to the root of the matter we must have a sure standard by which we make our judgement. We have only two choices – our way or God’s word. Hopefully you have made the right choice which is to chart your course according to God’s will.

If we invest our lives in anything other than God’s work we will be wasting it. None of us know how much time we have left, so let us “…number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” ( Psa. 90:12). Remember what missionary C. T. Studd said, ” Only one life. Twill soon be past. Only what’s done for Christ will last”. – HDS

A PICTURE OF PEACE

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27

Here is an old story that gives us a beautiful illustration of our text:

Two artists went out to paint a picture of peace. One painted a silvery lake embosomed deep amid the hills, where no storm could ever touch it—calm, sweet, quiet in its shelter. The other painted a wild sea, swept by tempests, strewn with wrecks—but rising out of the sea a great rock, and in the rock, high up, a cleft, with herbage and flowers amid which, on her nest, a dove was sitting. The latter is the true picture of Christian peace.

J. R. Miller wrote, “Anybody can be confident—when there is nothing to disturb, no danger, no storm. Anybody can be happy—when there is no trouble, nothing to hurt or vex. Anybody can be patient—when there is nothing to make one impatient. Any little lake can be smooth and glassy—when there is no wind to ruffle it, or when it is hidden away within a wall of mountains. But we want a religion which will help us to have peace—when the sorest trials are upon us! How can we get this peace? Only by hiding in Christ!”

NO FAVORITES BUT INTIMATES

“Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons” – Acts 10:34

“And the Lord spake unto Moses face to face as a man speaketh unto his friend.” -Exodus 33:11

While reading an article by Vance Havner I noticed he said some things I had mentioned in a message recently – but he says it better. Please read and consider:

Someone said it well, “God has intimates but no favorites.” He has no pets. He may seem to grant to some more success, greater blessings, than to others but, whatever the reasons are, known best to Himself, favoritism is not one of them. He sends rain upon the just and the unjust. He is no respecter of persons.

But He has closer fellowship with some, reveals Himself to them more fully, confides in them His deepest secrets. So He did with Enoch, with Abraham, “the friend of God,” with Moses, not because of special merit in them or favoritism with Him, but because in His sovereign will He chose to do so.

Yet any man can know God more intimately. “Draw nigh to God and He will draw nigh to you.”

Jesus promised to manifest Himself to the obedient heart (Jno. 14:21). We are not servants but friends, and we can be close friends.

Do not expect to be a favorite, but aspire to be an intimate of God’s . His secret is with them that fear Him.

OUR HELPER

“ Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.” – Heb. 13:5-6

One of the things we all have in common is trouble ( Job 14:1 ). We all face difficulties and we often wonder how to deal with them. People are looking for answers and hoping for help. You’ve never met anyone who doesn’t need help of some kind. Regardless of how happy, healthy, and self-sufficient they appear to be they need help. Therefore the need for encouragement is great.

Some live in fear and without hope everyday. They long for relief but don’t know where to find it. If that describes you, I have good news. Christ is your helper!

Speaking from experience and observation, I can tell you that I have –
– proof that God was gracious yesterday,
– pleasure that He is gracious today, and
– promises that He will be gracious tomorrow.
After all, He is “the God of all grace”. And it is due to that fact that we can find help, hope, and happiness – regardless of our hardships.

Think about it. There is never a moment when we aren’t in God’s thoughts and under His care. Whatever the need, we have blessed assurance that all our needs will be provided ( Matt. 6:33) “according to his riches in glory” ( Phil. 4:19). And that is all due to the greatness of His grace.

How about that! We sing “amazing grace” and well we should, but it is more than amazing. As with all the attributes of God we stretch our minds searching for just the right words and all we can say is that it is more than amazing! And this is the God that wants to help you. And He is able.

Whatever your situation is, there is help. It is not a question of if God can or will. The only question is “Will you accept His help by trusting Him? God cannot lie and He has given “exceeding great and precious promises” (2 Pet. 1:4) to those who trust Him. So “ cast all your care upon the Lord, for He careth for you”. – HDS

LET GOD

” Now Sarai Abram’s wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.”-Gen.16;1-2
Yesterday’s devotion was “Let Go and Let God”. Today I want to focus on the last part of that – let God. Everytime I think of that I think about the times when I took it upon myself to fix things rather than waiting on God. In my effort to make things better I made them worse. Rather than prayerfully waiting forGod to take care of the problem I took matters into my own hands and made a mess.

When I started preaching my idea of a good preacher was to be a rugged, two-fisted, fighting fundamentalist whose mission was to attack every wrong and correct it before the sun went set. I didn’t want to be known as a compromiser so I thought that all that mattered was being right and making others get right. But I was wrong.

I left the first church I pastored after a year because I thought “these old folks aren’t spiritual enough and I can’t help them”. It wasn’t until later, and some lessons from God, that I realized how good that church was. They had to be spiritual to put up with me. They loved me although I didn’t appreciate them.

I now realize running ahead of God is dangerous. In the first place it shows a lack of faith in God. Rather than waiting upon God as we’re told repeatedly, we forge ahead as though we know better than God. That’s stupid! We see an example of this in Gen. 16:1-2 where Sarah and Abraham decide to have a child by Hagar rather than waiting for the promised son.

It’s hard to imagine that a great man like Abraham would be so foolish as to do what he did – but he did. It’s as though he thought he had a better idea than God. But time revealed he was wrong. And the same will happen to you if you run ahead of God. Were we wise we would prayerfully wait upon the Lord to fix the problem. If something requires immediate action God will make it clear to us. Without such assurance we best wait, pray, and give God time to work.

I don’t know what difficulty you are facing, but God knows, cares, and can help. Wait until He does or until He tells you to tackle the problem. The outcome will always be better that way. “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.”- Psa.27:14. _ HDS
