MORNING MANNA           11-7-21

November 7, 2021 By Pastor David Stone

G. Campbell Morgan told of a friend of his who had a little daughter that he dearly loved. They were great friends, the father and daughter, and were always together. But there seemed to come an estrangement on the child’s part. The father could not get her company as formerly. She seemed to shun him. If he wanted her to walk with him, she always had something else to do. The father was grieved and could not understand what the trouble was.

His birthday came and in the morning his daughter came to his room, her face radiant with love, and handed him a present. Opening the parcel, he found a pair of exquisitely made slippers.

The father said, “My child, it was very good of you to buy me such lovely slippers.”

“O father,” she said, “I did not buy them–I made them for you!”

Looking at her he said, “I think I understand now, what long has been a mystery to me. Is this what you have been doing for the last three months?”

“Yes,” she said, “but how did you know how long I have been at work on them?”

He said, “Because for three months I have missed your company and your love. I have wanted you with me–but you have been too busy. These are beautiful slippers–but next time buy your present, and let me have you all the days. I would rather have my child herself, than anything she could make for me.”

Just so, we are in danger of being so busy in the Lord’s work that we cannot be enough with the Lord in love’s fellowship. He may say to us, “I like your works, your toils, your service–but I miss the love you gave Me at first.”

There is real danger that we get so busy in striving to be active Christians, so absorbed in our tasks and duties, our efforts to bring others into the church–that Christ Himself shall be less loved, and shall miss our communing with Him.

Loyalty to Christ means first of all devotion. Has Christ really had the highest place in your heart? It is not your work that He wants most–it is you! It is beautiful to do things for Him, it is still more beautiful to make a home for Him in your heart.

A young man, at great cost, brought from many countries the most beautiful materials he could find, and built an exquisite little chapel as a memorial to his dead wife. Only a few men could do anything so rare, so lovely. But the poorest of us can enthrone Jesus in our hearts–making a little sanctuary in our hearts for Him.

As we think about that, let us remember what Jesus said to the church at Ephesus,“

” Revelation 2:4. What about you? -HDS

THE SECRET TO SATISFACTION

” Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.“- Matt. 5:6

I don’t know about you but that word “filled” gets my attention – that’s to put it mildly. Actually it grabs me by the throat, shakes me, and shouts in my ear. I don’t want less than what God wants for me. Why would I?

I remember what happened when Israel “limited the Holy One” ( Psa. 78:41). So why should we short change ourselves when God wants the very best for His children? We don’t have to twist His arm to get what we need. All we need to do is to align our will with His and He fills us. Therefore, in that sense, we can get as close to God as we choose to be.

The problem is that most people are more concerned about happiness than they are about holiness – so they miss the blessing. They don’t realize that holiness leads to happiness. In other words, God actually wants for them what they want for themselves – He just expects them to find it in Him rather than where they are looking. Those who “hunger and thirst after righteousness” receive what the world can’t give or take away.

The word “filled” speaks of being satisfied – the state of wanting nothing more, content with what God gives. We seek and He satisfies. Therefore any lack of such as expressed in our text is due to a failure on our part, not God’s. When we want what He wants we get it! So actually there is no secret to satisfaction. Our Lord has already shown us the source – “hunger and thirst after righteousness“.

Strangely enough, even as God fills us, that satisfaction produces a desire for more of the same. Consequently there is an ever increasing enjoyment of God and what He provides. As Paul said in 2 Cor. 3:18, we are changed from glory to glory until we get to glory – then all shall be glory! So, remember, you are always best to yourself when you do your best to give God what He wants! – HDS

DESIRES

The psalmist spoke to the passion called for in this beatitude when he wrote…

“My soul breaketh ( is crushed) for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times.” (Psalm 119:20

Spurgeon wrote – True godliness lies very much in desires. As we are not what we shall be, so also we are not what we would be. The desires of gracious men after holiness are intense, — they cause a wear of heart, a straining of the mind, till it feels ready to snap with the heavenly pull. A high value of the Lord’s commandment leads to a pressing desire to know and to do it, and this so weighs upon the soul that it is ready to break in pieces under the crush of its own longings. What a blessing it is when all our desires are after the things of God. We may well long for such longings…

David had such reverence for the word, and such a desire to know it, and to be conformed to it, that his longings caused him a sort of heart break, which he here pleads before God. Longing is the soul of praying, and when the soul longs till it breaks, it cannot be long before the blessing will be granted. The most intimate communion between the soul and its God is carried on by the process described in the text. God reveals his will, and our heart longs to be conformed thereto. God judges, and our heart rejoices in the verdict. This is fellowship of heart most real and thorough.

Note well that our desire after the mind of God should be constant; we should feel holy longings “at all times.” Desires which can be put off and on like our garments are at best but mere wishes, and possibly they are hardly true enough to be called by that name, — they are temporary emotions born of excitement, and doomed to die when the heat which created them has cooled down. He who always longs to know and do the right is the truly right man. His judgment is sound, for he loves all God’s judgments, and follows them with constancy. His times shall be good, since he longs to be good and to do good at all times.

” I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments.” (Psalm 119:131)

WHAT SHALL WE GIVE?

“What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits toward me? I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord.” (Psalms 116:12)

William MacDonald wrote: “In the matter of our soul’s salvation, there is nothing we can do to earn or deserve it- We cannot put God in our debt or reimburse Him in any way, because salvation is a gift of grace.

The proper response to God’s free offer of eternal life is first to take the cup of salvation, that is, to accept it by faith. Then we should call upon the name of the Lord, that is, thank and praise Him for the unspeakable gift.

Even after we are saved there is nothing we can do to repay the Lord for all His benefits toward us. “Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an offering far too small.” However, there is a fitting response we can make, and that is the most reasonable thing we can do. “Love so amazing so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.“

If the Lord Jesus gave His body for us, the least we can do is give our bodies for Him.

Pilkington of Uganda said, “If He is King, He has a right to all.” C. T. Studd said, “When I came to see that Jesus Christ had died for me, it didn’t seem hard to give up all for Him.”

Borden of Yale prayed, “Lord Jesus, I take hands off as far as my life is concerned. I put Thee on the throne in my heart.”

Betty Scott Stam prayed, “I give myself, my life, my all, utterly to Thee, to be Thine forever.”

Charles Haddon Spurgeon said, “In that day, when I surrendered myself to my Savior, I gave Him my body, my soul, my spirit; I gave Him all I had, and all I shall have for time and for eternity. I gave Him all my talents, my power, my faculties, my eyes, my ears, my conscience, my limbs, my emotions, my judgment, my whole manhood, and all that could come of it, whatever fresh capacity or new capability I might be endowed with.”

Finally, Isaac Watts reminded us that “drops of grief can n’er repay the debt of love I owe,” then added “Dear Lord, I give myself away, ’tis all that I can do.”

The passion of Jesus – His bleeding hands and feet, His wounds, His tears demand one fitting response: The sacrifice of our lives for Him.”

WHAT DO YOU KNOW?

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” – 1 John 5:13

Growing up in the Ozarks I’ve heard a lot of different greetings.  As a boy we would say “What ya doing? or “How ya doin?”  In high school the boys would say one to another, “What’s up cat?”.  Another was “What’d ya know?”  Of course no one expected a detailed account of the person’s knowledge.  It was just a greeting, but “What do you know?” is actually a very good question.

You’ve heard people say “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.”  Taken in a certain context that might be true, but taken literally it is ridiculous.  What you don’t know can hurt you, it might kill you, and could cause you to end up in hell.

No one can be saved without knowing and trusting the gospel of Christ (Rom.10:14).  There can be no saving faith where there is no knowledge of the truth.  And a saving relationship goes beyond knowing about God – it is knowing God and being known of God, which happens when we trust Christ.  So it’s not just a matter of “What do you know?  It’s also “Who do you know?”

With this in mind, do you know Christ as your Lord and Savior?  Do you know your sins have been forgiven?  Do you know your home is in heaven?  If you don’t you can – “And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.”I John 2;3.  – HDS
