MORNING MANNA          3-6-21

March 6, 2021 By Pastor David Stone

“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;” – 2 Cor. 10:5

From the moment a person is saved it becomes apparent that he is engaged in a warfare and that life will be a struggle. Due to the fact that he now has a new nature his desires are different than before. He now wants to please God, but at the same time he is tempted to do otherwise. He is at war and the battlefield is his mind. To win he must guard his thought life so as to bring “into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ”.

We have the awesome responsibility to control our mind so as to have the “mind of Christ”(Phil. 2:5). In light of the many things working against us this is not an easy thing to do, but it is possible – and therefore our duty. To do otherwise is disobedience and that’s costly. The question is, “How do we do this?”

In answering that question Paul first tells us what not to do in vs. 3-4. Then he proceeds to give us the answer in vs. 5. Alan Redpath called vs.3-4 “the law of exclusion” and vs.5 the “law of attention”. That’s a good way to look at it. That’s exactly what Paul had in mind when he wrote Phil. 4:6-9 “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.” If you examine each item on this list you will see that it speaks of a characteristic of Christ.

Here’s the point – we are enabled to cope with and conquer the destructive forces working against us by filling our mind with thoughts of Christ.. It is only by “Looking unto Jesus” (Heb.12:2) that we are able to fulfill God’s calling in our lives. And to look unto Jesus we must look into the Word of God, which is called “the sword of the Spirit” ( Eph.6:17). That is the only thing that can protect us and provide what we need. We neglect it at our own peril. To be battle ready we must saturate our minds with God’s word. Failing to do that we are sure to lose. – HDS

MORNING MANNA.          3-5-21

March 5, 2021 By Pastor David Stone

When they [the council] heard this, they were furious and plotted to kill them [Peter and the apostles].- Acts 5:33

Adrian Rodgers wrote: Suppose you’re on the battlefield and someone’s coming at you. You warn him, “Don’t come any further! I’ll shoot!” He answers, “I don’t believe in your gun. As a matter of fact, I don’t believe in guns at all.” That’s not going to change anything, is it?

Likewise, the Bible is the Sword of the Spirit. Someone may say, “Well, I don’t believe the Bible.” But it will cut him anyway! The apostles preached the Scripture, and when the people heard it, they were cut to the heart. The Word cuts even an unbeliever. It’s a two-edged sword. It cuts to heal, or it cuts to judge. But it will cut—believe it or not.

Before going into battle, soldiers are dedicated to training in the use of their weapons. How foolish to go into battle without training! How familiar are you with your Sword?

God has given you a weapon for spiritual battles—the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. In the armor of God, it is the only offensive weapon—the rest are defensive. To have the victory God wants for you, recognize your Bible as a sharp sword for attacking the enemy’s strongholds. Every soldier spends a lot of time getting familiar with his weapon. Get trained in the Bible. Study it, practice it, use it daily.

“Hear Him” Matt. 17:5

Yesterday’s article set before us the best advice anyone could ever give, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it” (John2:5). However, before we can obey Him we must hear Him and that’s exactly what our text tells us to do.

There are many voices coming from a confused world clamoring for our attention. Considering that our heart is deceitful we must take great care in who we listen to. Making matters all the more difficult is that most of these voices appeal to our desires. Our adversary, the devil, is cleaver and he designs our temptations according to our fleshly desires. Even in the matter of religion he appeals to our pride so as to make it about what we do rather than what Christ did.

That’s why, regardless of what we’re talking about, it’s crucial that we know the truth. And the only way we can be certain is to hear what our Lord says about the matter. But, how do we do that? Contrary to what some claim, we don’t hear God speak in an audible voice. Nor can we rely on dreams’ visions, or our feelings. To hear God speak we must hear God’s Word.

In a world clouded by confusion we are in desperate need of a clear word of truth and that’s exactly what we find in the Bible. Not only is it all true, it deals with out most pressing need. Not only does it reveal man’s greatest need it gives us the remedy for our problems. It ministers to us in ways what nothing else can do. It has transforming power.

Think about it. You have within your reach the means to hear from God Himself, who created heaven, earth, and the universe. In that blessed old book you discover the answer to life’s most serious questions, commands, counsel, guidance, promises, and comfort. It would be foolish for us to not hear Him. – HDS

“ His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. ”-John 2:5

“Whatsoever He saith.” We belong to Christ because He has redeemed us. He is our only Lord and Master.

“Whatsoever He saith.” We may not choose some of His commands for obedience and some for neglect, inattention, or rejection. We are not to do the pleasant things He bids us to do, and leave undone the things that are not according to our own taste and feeling. We are to do even the things that cost pain and personal sacrifice. It was thus that Jesus Himself did the will of His Father. That will took Him to His cross; but He did not shrink from accepting it when He saw the way growing dark before Him, or when He felt the thorns under His feet and the burdens increasing unto crushing weight upon His shoulders. If we would walk in His steps our obedience must be complete.

“Whatsoever he saith.” But how can we know what He saith? We cannot hear His voice as the servants at the wedding heard it. He speaks now in His Word, and the reverent heart may always hear what He says, as the sacred pages are prayerfully pondered. He speaks in the conscience that is kept tender by loyal obeying; He speaks in the providence that brings duty to our hand. There never is any real uncertainty as to what He says, if we are truly intent on knowing His will.

“Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it!” It is the doing that is important. We should never ask questions nor make suggestions when Jesus has spoken; the one thing for us is obedience. We should never ask what the consequences may be, what it may cost us; we are simply to obey. Christ knows why He wants us to do the thing, and that should be reason enough for us.- J R Miller

MORNING MANNA          2-2-21

March 2, 2021 By Pastor David Stone

Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world– Acts 15:18

Perhaps you have known, even recently, the unsettling and sorrowful experience of receiving a phone call, or a doctor’s report, or an employer’s notice that delivered unexpected and tragic news — “You have cancer.” “We’re letting you go.” “Your loved one has been in an accident.” No matter what form these moments take in our particular situation, they always remind us of our personal frailty and inability to control the details of our lives.

The great consolation from God’s Word, however, is that God never has such moments. He is never surprised by calamity that befalls us, He is never taken back by sudden tragedy, His plans are never disrupted by the unexpected. In short, He is never at a loss for a solution to any problem…or for the power to implement it… or for the wisdom to make sure it is the right solution.

God knows all His works (and subsequently, obviously, the events those works will be connected with) from the beginning of the world. It is for this reason that God can, and does, give us such rock-solid assurances in the midst of earth-shattering catastrophes. “I will never leave you or forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5); “my grace is sufficient for thee” (2 Corinthians 12:9); “all things work together for good to them that love God” (Romans 8:28); “trying of your faith worketh patience” (James 1:3).

Beloved, in your moments of overwhelming pain, or grief, or disappointment, flee to the God Who is never disappointed or surprised, but is touched by the feelings of your infirmities. Rush to Him, rest in Him, believe on Him. (Baptist Bible Hour)
