MORNING MANNA          1/1/21

January 1, 2021 By Pastor David Stone

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” – Heb. 13:8

As we face the new year, as different as we are, we all have one thing in common – we are hoping for change. And I can promise you, change is coming! But before you get to excited, I have to tell you it might be worse rather than better. We just don’t know. The fact is, we don’t just want change, we want improvement – we want things to get better. Yet we are forced to face the fact that we don’t know the future. We have to live with uncertainty, and that can be uncomfortable.

The question is, “How do we do it?” Sometimes it seems impossible. Here’s the answer – We can face the uncertainties by focusing on the certainties. We confront the challenges with confidence by considering that which never changes. That leaves us only one place to look, as Heb. 12:2 says, “Looking unto Jesus“. That’s the only way to keep from getting deceived, distracted, depressed and discouraged, which is dangerous.

To feel the impact of our text it helps to consider that it was written about 35 years after the crucifixion of Christ. It was a time when the Jewish Christians were hated, persecuted, scattered, and discouraged. This letter was written to boost their confidence in Christ, giving them courage to face their hardships. But it also helps us today. We ought to be thankful that we have an eternal relationship with Him who is the same year after year throughout the centuries. We can depend upon Him because He is never changing and always present. Neither the years of time, the age of our body, the hardness of the way, nor the failing of the flesh can diminish the quality of our relationship with Christ.

In light of the fact that our bodies grow older and weaker, the pages of the calendar keep turning and times keep changing it is sometimes hard for us to grasp the concept of something never changing. But when it comes to God Himself we can rely upon the truthfulness of His word and the testimony of His people. When we read our text it gives us assurance and comfort. There is never a time when we are without help.The earth might quake and the mountains might fall, but our hope is settled upon Christ the solid rock, the Rock of Ages. Whatever the new year holds, this old truth prepares us to face it with firm assurance. Neither the person, the power, nor the promises of Christ ever change. -HDS

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee” – Psa. 56:3

If there is one word that describes what most people are feeling right now it is fear. As we look back over the year behind us and think of all the difficulties we faced and struggles we’ve gone through, we have hoped that the year before us would be better. But now on the eve of the new year things look bleak. In many areas the pandemic is worse than ever, hospitals are full of Covid patients, and now there’s a new strain of the virus. Besides, many folks are still unemployed, broke, sick, etc. Time has not healed our wounds, and people are afraid!

In light of all this I want to suggest that you memorize today’s text – “What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee”. David wrote these words at a time when he was overwhelmed with fear, and he teaches us a very valuable lesson. If fear is your situation, faith is your solution.

Perhaps this is a time of great fear for you and there seems to be no help on the horizon. Your dreams have turned into nightmares and your future looks bleak. As you stand on the threshold of the new year you feel that the next step could send you over the edge to your destruction. But there is good news! David’s God is your God and He stands ready to deliver all those who trust Him. I pray you will!

I don’t know what the future holds, but I know Who holds the future, and I know He is able to take you through whatever He brings you to. But you must trust Him, and you have no reason to do otherwise. Do it today. Remember – if fear is your situation, faith is your solution!  – HDS

MORNING MANNA            12/30/20

“My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle”- Job 7:6

This is the time of the year when we have two things on our mind — reflection and resolutions. And age has a way of making us view life very differently. For those in their youth time seems to crawl. They can’t wait until they get old enough to fulfill some age dependent desire. But for us older folks time seems to fly. Having the advantage of past experiences we look back and wonder where time has gone. But we are at a disadvantage when it comes to time remaining. While the kiddos are at the sunrise of life we are nearing the sunset, and time is passing rapidly – whether we like it or not.

Someone said, “Scientific measurements indicate that we are moving even when we are standing still. Continental land masses sit on enormous slabs of rock that slide very slowly at the rate of 1 to 8 inches per year. In addition, America is gradually moving westward, away from Europe, at the rate of 3 inches per year. Consider this: our Milky Way galaxy is hurtling through space at 375 miles per second or 1.3 million miles per hour. And within our own galaxy, the sun and its solar system are zooming along at 12.4 miles per second toward the star Vega in the constellation Lyra.”

So contrary to the way you feel everything is moving and your life is passing. As we move closer and closer to the end let us remember that we are moving from time to eternity, toward an appointment with God, the time of which is known only to God. Let us then resolve to make the best possible use of the time we have left. Are you ready to meet Him? – HDS

“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.“ Psalm 90:12

For several years we started the new year as a church by asking everyone to memorize a certain verse that would set the tone for the upcoming year. I mention that because we used Psa. 90:12 more frequently than any other verse. I simply can’t think of a better verse than this to kick off the new year. That being said I want you to consider these comments about this scripture from J. R. Miller. He said—-

“There are several ways of numbering our days. One way is merely to count them off as we tear off the daily leaves of our calendar. Each evening a man has one day less to live. But that is not true numbering. Another, way is merely to count the days into the aggregate of life. A man is one day older, but that is all. He is no better. He has left no worthy record on the day’s page. The true numbering, is that which fills the days as they pass—with records of godly and beautiful living, and with lines of growth in character.

Just now we are looking back over the story of a closing year. What have we given the days to keep for us? What lessons of wisdom have we learned from them, as one by one they have passed? There is little good in worrying over the failures of the year—but we ought to learn from our past. He is the wise man, not who makes no mistakes—but who does not repeat his mistakes.”

I urge each of you to commit this verse to memory, redeem the time, and invest your life in that which will pay eternal dividends. Life is a precious gift from God – don’t waste it! – HDS

“All things work together for good.” – Romans 8:28

All the Lord’s people love God. They do not love Him as they desire, yet they cleave to Him, and follow on to know Him. He is their God, and has called them according to His own purpose and grace, which was given them in Jesus Christ before the world began, and it becomes the Christian to view everything as having its place in God’s economy; and its work to do in accomplishing God’s purposes.

Angels, men and devils, but perform His pleasure. All things are connected by the infinite wisdom and good pleasure of the Most High. He superintends every movement of every one of His creatures; and directs them to answer His purpose and end. He overrules everything for our good; we never lose anything worth keeping by any of His dispensations.

We may gain by all that occurs; we may gain wisdom-holiness — matter for prayer or praise — work for faith, patience, or hope.

However, our best interests are secured; everything is working for the good of the church; and though it be rough, it is a right way. – James Smith, 1840

All things on earth, and all in heaven,
On God’s eternal will depend;
And all for greater good were given,
And all shall in His glory end;
This be my care! and this alone;
Father, in me Thy will be done.
