WAKING UP WORRIED
“Be careful for nothing;…..” Philippians 4:6
Did you ever have one of those days—you wake up worried, and weary? No sooner than you drag out of bed than you are attacked by anxiety. It might revolve around several things. So what should you do?
Pray!“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Philippians 4:6
Picture the problem:
- The Unfinished—“How in the world will I get it all done?”
- The Unknown – “How will this work out?””What will happen?”
- The Unpleasant – “I don’t want to do it?”
- The Unpopular – “I wonder how they’ll take it?”
Many other things could be added to that list, but you get the picture. Before your feet hit the floor you find yourself in need of an attitude adjustment. So, what do we do? The solution is to re-orient ourselves, get our focus back in alignment with God’s point of view. Hey – you don’t need a long list of “do’s” & “don’ts.” I know I don’t know your situation, but I do know that God’s word has the power to change our attitude.
Ponder His promises. Open your Bible and search out the rich treasures God has for you. Fill your mind with His “exceeding great and precious promises” (2 Pet.1:4). Paul gives us the answer for this problem in Phil.4:4-8. In those verses Paul tells us to “think on these things” – “whatsoever things are true—honest—just—pure—lovely—of good report,” and if we do “the peace of God which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Phil.4:7).- HDS
Prayer Prompter: The purpose of prayer is not to get what we want, but to become what God wants.

SPEAK UP & LOOK UP
“My voice shalt thou hear in the morning,O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee and will look up.” Psalms 5:3
Almost 50 years ago, A.W. Tozer said, “Modern civilization is so complex as to make the devotional life all but impossible.” Tozer said this before there was internet, digital cable, palm pilots, or cell phones. While some of you may not have bought into this technology yet, you have definitely been affected and surrounded by it.
These types of technological advances are beneficial, but can also rob us of so much time. However, it’s not just the modern complexities that hinder our devotional lives. Most of the time, the biggest obstacle in developing our relationships with God lies within ourselves. It’s our own laziness and reluctance to stop and spend time in prayer and Bible study.
So how do you lay to rest Tozer’s assumption that today’s society makes devotional life impossible? First, you must admit that you have failed to spend time with God. Second, you must recognize that prayer and Bible study are absolutely essential for growth in your spiritual life. Your physical body can’t live off one piece of bread a week, just as your soul can’t live off the Word fed to you only on Sunday.
Develop a plan. In Psalm 5:3, we see that David set aside time every morning, before any part of his day unfolded, to spend time with the Lord. With this plan of action, you will be able to remove the complexities of the world and put first things first. Open your heart to the incredible joy and relationship that will come when you consistently devote your life to the Lord.
Pray that God would help you beat the impossible through time spent with Him every day. If you have not been faithful in spending time with God, ask for forgiveness and rededicate a piece of your time to your relationship with Him. – Source unknown

PERSPECTIVE
The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance—The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.—I will bless the LORD—.Psalm 16:5-7
Perspective is powerful–it can make you feel like a prince or a pauper. Keeping things in their proper perspective is key to pleasure, your ability to enjoy life. Example–
Picture yourself, with everything you have, living in the heart of Hollywood, surrounded by the mansions of the rich and famous. This view breeds discontent. It’s easy to be envious when you compare yourself to folks like that. You start to feel that you deserve more, bigger, and better. Life seems unfair.
However, let’s change our perspective by picturing ourself, with everything we have, living in a poverty ridden place such as Haiti. Look at your neighbors. Notice the beggars roaming the streets. Consider the cardboard shacks in which they live. Pay close attention to what they wear and eat. Think about their means of transportation and the lack of public services. Want to trade places? Of course not!
It is no wonder that a wise man like Paul would say,”—we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen—things which are–eternal.”( 2 Cor. 4:18). He knew that, instead of comparing ourselves to others, we should keep our focus on who we are and what we have in Christ.
Discontent destroys our joy and impedes our progress in life. It makes winners feel like losers. As Ben Franklin said, “Content makes poor men rich; discontent makes rich men poor.” A wall plaque in my office says,”I complained because I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet.” Yep–it’s all a matter of perspective!- HDS, 10-28-10
