MORNING MANNA            8-14-25

August 14, 2025 By Pastor David Stone

“Cast your burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain you.” Psalm 55:22

Octavius Winslow died in 1878, but before leaving this world he left things he had written that continues to bless us today. The following is an example.

It is by an act of simple, prayerful faith we transfer our cares and anxieties, our sorrows and needs, to the Lord. Jesus invites you come and lean upon Him, and to lean with all your might upon that arm that balances the universe, and upon that bosom that bled for you upon the soldier’s spear! But you doubtingly ask, “Is the Lord able to do this thing for me ?” And thus, while you are debating a matter about which there is not the shadow of a shade of doubt, the burden is crushing your gentle spirit to the dust. And all the while Jesus stands at your side and lovingly says, “Cast your burden upon Me and I will sustain you. I am God Almighty. I bore the load of your sin and condemnation up the steep of Calvary, and the same power of omnipotence, and the same strength of love that bore it all for you then, is prepared to bear your need and sorrow now. Roll it all upon Me! Child of My love! Lean hard! Let Me feel the pressure of your care. I know your burden, child! I shaped it-I poised it in My own hand and made no proportion of its weight to your unaided strength. For even as I laid it on, I said I shall be near, and while she leans on Me, this burden shall be Mine, not hers. So shall I keep My child within the encircling arms of My own love. Here lay it down! Do not fear to impose it on a shoulder which upholds the government of worlds! Yet closer come! You are not near enough! I would embrace your burden, so I might feel My child reposing on My breast. You love Me! I know it. Doubt not, then. But, loving me, lean hard!”—Octavius Winslow (1808-1878).

Think about it! As someone said,”Prayer will either make a man stop sinning, or sin will make him stop praying.” – HDS

HOW IS YOUR APPETITE?
“How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth.”–Psalm 119:103

There are some folks who attend a doctrinally sound church, but are spiritually starving and stunted in their spiritual growth. The problem might be that they don’t hear and heed the Word of God. But it might be due to another problem.

F.B. Meyer wrote,”The whole of Christian living, in my opinion, hinges on the way Christians read the Bible for themselves. We may measure our growth in grace by the growth of our love for private Bible study; and we may be sure that there is something seriously wrong when we lose our appetite for God’s Word.”

I agree. So, the logical question is–“How’s your appetite?” Is there “something seriously wrong”? Do you love private Bible study? How much time do you spend each day reading and studying God’s Word? How much time do you spend watching TV, etc.? Are you growing in grace? Why not?

Sadly, many people are on a starvation diet. They are depriving themselves of the vital nourishment that only the Bible can provide. They are ailing spiritually and it shows. Some people are wondering why they can’t cope with trials, conquer temptation, and find comfort in their troubles, when the culprit is a lack of Bible study. You can’t starve yourself and remain strong. So, it’s easy to see that serious Bible study isn’t just for show, it is a matter of survival! HDS

HOW IMPORTANT ARE YOU—TO YOU?

“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2‬:‭3‬ ‭

Near Lincoln, Kansas, stands a group of gravestones that boggles the imagination. A farmer named David, a self-made and determined man, managed to amass a considerable fortune, but had few friends and no relatives for whom he cared.

When his wife died, David erected an elaborate statue showing both her and himself sitting at the opposite ends of a loveseat. So pleased was he with this monument that he commissioned the sculptor to create another, this time showing him kneeling at her grave with a wreath in his hand. And that made such a fine impression upon him that he set out to erect still another tombstone depicting his wife kneeling at his future graveside with a wreath. He even put wings on her back as she now resided in another world. So, as time passed and one idea led to another, he eventually spent over a quarter of a million dollars on monuments to his wife and himself.

David had no interest in aiding his fellowmen or benefiting his nearby town. Nor did he become a blessing to the church, for he used all of his resources on shrines to self. He died at the age of 92, a resident of the poorhouse, and his cherished stones are slowly but surely sinking into the Kansas soil, victimized by vandalism and neglect, weathered by time.

When I read that story I thought–that’s just like sinful human nature! Perhaps you don’t have the resources to do what David did, but you make the same mistake. Rather than seeking to glorify God by rendering service to others you seek only to gratify the flesh. Fact is—you can never find satisfaction by seeking it. Fulfillment in life comes only by knowing you have done your best to do your God-given duty. The best monument a person can leave is a life well lived, and you can’t do that without making yourself a servant for Christ’s sake.- HDS

 BEYOND THE BASICS

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” 2 Timothy‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬-‭17‬ ‭

There are those who boast that they read the Bible everyday and read through it at least once a year, some for many years, yet they are woefully ignorant of the great doctrines of the Bible. They have no idea what atonement, justification, sanctification, etc. means, and they don’t seem to care if they ever do. That’s sad.

Although they are familiar with the popular stories of the Bible they have no idea as to their spiritual significance. When it comes to shadows and types they are clueless, and not much better when it comes to parables and prophecies. They enjoy the inspirational aspects of the Bible, but have little interest in instructions. To them the Bible is more like a good-luck charm or a rabbit’s foot. They are quick to affirm their belief that it is God’s Word, but their understanding of it is very limited. If you point out something from the Bible that is contrary to what they believe they usually respond with “That’s just your interpretation”.

If you are one of those I’ve just described, I’m not trying to belittle or embarrass you. I’m thrilled that you are reading your Bible everyday, everyone should. But I want you to see that there is so much more to it than that. The doctrines I’ve mentioned are glorious and should be of interest to all, not just pastors and theologians. These are precious truths that pertain to your relationship with God that will bless your heart beyond measure as you grasp more and more of their meaning. They speak of the person and work of Christ, and are never boring.

Try doing a word study sometime and read all the verses related to it. You will be blessed. Study a particular section of the Bible as though you had to teach it next Sunday and you will be amazed by what you will learn and how you will be helped. Do yourself a favor and start some sort of systematic study of God’s Word. It will not only change your life, it will thrill your soul beyond what you ever imagined.

Seeing that the Bible is God’s revelation to man how can we not be interested? Considering that it has transforming power how can we ignore it? Knowing it deals with the most important issues in life and answers the most perplexing questions in the world, how can we not care? Think about it! – HDS

PRAYER REQUEST

August 8, 2025 By Pastor David Stone

Sending this request on Morning Manna because the Prayer page is messed up and unable to send it there.

Please pray for Roger Ponder, my son in law. The following is from Debbie, my daughter.

Asking prayer for Roger he could either have a crushed vertebrae or a ruptured disc of the 4 bulging disc’s. He cannot stand or walk or put any pressure on his left leg without being in excruciating pain.  We will know what the outcome will be after his MRI .
