MORNING MANNA           8/3/19

August 3, 2019 By Pastor David Stone

“Examine yourselves…..” – 2 Cor. 13:5

This might be the hardest thing for most people to do. They have no trouble examining others, but they find it terribly difficult to make an honest examination of ourselves. I suspect that isn’t so much a fear of what they might find, as it is knowing what they will find. Let’s face it, most of us don’t want to face it when it comes to examining ourselves. We don’t want to think about our faults and failures. Nor do we want others to know about them. So we work overtime trying to project an imagine of what we want others to think about us.

With an attitude like that we would do well to examine ourselves with regards to salvation, to see whether or not we are “in the faith”. But even after we know we are saved there is still a need to examine ourselves ( 1 Cor. 11:28). That’s a need we never out grow. We ought to do so as though we are on a mission to find anything that is contrary to the will of God. Doing so is for our own good.

Such exams should be thorough, frequent, honest, and according to the proper standard. As an inspector for the Missouri State Highway Department I was required to examine and test materials to insure quality. I couldn’t afford to error and I wasn’t at liberty to just make up the results. I had to follow the standards and record my findings. I went to great lengths to make sure it was right. Even so, we should take care in examining ourselves. And the only way to do that is by relying on the sure standard of God’s Word. What we find might be shocking, disturbing, and harmful, but its discovery is crucial. We need to know the truth about ourselves and the only way to find it is by looking to the One who knows the truth about us. – HDS

MORNING MANNA         8/2/19

August 2, 2019 By Pastor David Stone

“For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.” – 2 Cor. 10:12

I’m a firmly believe that we ought to do our best at whatever we do. My mother instilled that in me by repeating these words over and over again: “Good, better, best. Never let them rest. Till your good is your better and your better is your best”. More importantly, God demands our best. He expects us to be faithful – doing the best we can with what we’ve got. That requires different things from different people. He doesn’t compare us one to another. When we’ve done the best we can we’ve done as much as anyone else, and enough to please God.

Some, however, fall into the trap of trying to do more or better than others. They are dissatisfied with their lives simply because they can’t excel above others. They aren’t satisfied even when they’ve done their best. They want to be like someone else – look like someone else – do what someone else does – have what someone else has. But, we shouldn’t compare ourselves with others or place ourselves in competition with others. We each must stand alone and give an account of ourselves to God. Your reward is based on faithfulness. When we give all, regardless of how small, it is enough. Your reward will be just as great as the person who, by human standards, who gave more or did better.

Stop comparing yourself to others. It’s okay to be you! In fact that’s what God wants and expects. There is great peace in being content with just being yourself. It takes the pressure off and brings relief. It also makes you more productive. Some of the most miserable on earth are people who are healthy, wealthy, and talented. Although they fare better than others in those things it is never enough to satisfy them. They break their neck trying to keep up with the Jones. They are determined to be king of the hill, top of the heap, better than the rest. And they want the whole world to know it.

God alone has the right to set the standard for goodness and greatness. You don’t have to be like someone else to win His approval. It’s okay to be you – but be your best. – HDS

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” – Psalms 56:3

Job couldn’t understand why he had been buffeted by painful adversities.

Abraham couldn’t understand why God would require him to sacrifice his son.

Jacob couldn’t understand why he was deprived of his son, thinking he was dead.

Joseph couldn’t understand why he was hated by his brothers and sold into slavery.

Moses couldn’t understand why he had to spend 40 years in the wilderness while his people suffered in bondage.

Mary and Martha couldn’t understand why the Lord wasn’t there to prevent the death of their brother.

History is filled with examples of people who found themselves in painful situations that they could not understand. But all who survived and thrived learned one grand lesson, that none of us should ever forget,—it is better to trust God than to try to understand Him.

Perhaps you are facing something today that has stretched you to your limits. You hurt and no one is there to help. You are looking for answers and God isn’t talking. What now? The answer to your dilemma is found in Proverbs 3:5, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” It worked for others and it will work for you! –David Stone (9/6/08)

MORNING MANNA        7/31/19

July 31, 2019 By Pastor David Stone

“The LORD is my strength and song, and is become my salvation. The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly. The right hand of the LORD is exalted: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly. I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.” – Psalm 118:14-17
In May of 2019 the Journal of the American Medical Association reported on a study that has been going on since 1992. Beginning that year, and each year since, the Health and Retirement Study interviews adults in or near retirement age. By following these people from year to year, and by adding new participants to the study over time, they are able to track the factors that have the greatest impact on the lives and health of thousands of people. They summarized their key finding this way: “A growing body of literature suggests that having a strong sense of purpose in life leads to improvements in both physical and mental health and enhances overall quality of life.”
What is true in retirement is true throughout life—those who have a definite purpose and goal in life tend to lead happier, healthier lives than those who do not. Every child of God is gifted differently, and there are many avenues through which we serve Him. But no matter the role or roles we play, no matter the talents or abilities we have, and no matter what our physical limitations may be, there is one thing that every living Christian can do—praise God.
When we recognize the importance of bringing glory to God, we understand that we always have an important purpose in our lives. No matter what we can or cannot otherwise do, we can always praise Him. “I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being” (Psalm 104:33). There is no higher purpose for a Christian than to praise and glorify God.(Daily in the Word)

“Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”-– Romans 12:21

We all face evil in life. It seems to come at us from all directions. It often seems impossible to escape or defeat it. And, we also are given to it much more than we like to admit. In some cases we allow the evil in others to provoke us to return evil for evil–which always causes us to lose rather than win. To be victorious we must be obedient. To win we must overcome evil with good. It is as one man said:

If we wish to overcome evil, we must overcome it by good. There are doubtless many ways of overcoming the evil in our own hearts, but the simplest, easiest, most universal, is to overcome it by active occupation in some good word or work. The best antidote against evil of all kinds, against the evil thoughts which haunt the soul, against the needless perplexities which distract the conscience, is to keep hold of the good we have. Impure thoughts will not stand against pure words, and prayers, and deeds. Little doubts will not avail against great certainties. Fix your affections on things above, and then you will be less and less troubled by the cares, the temptations, the troubles of things on earth. ( Copied)
