MORNING MANNA

August 12, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

“To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you.” 1 Peter 1:4

A man was sitting on a street corner, weeping. A friend saw him and asked, “Why are you crying?”
“Haven’t you read the papers? Rockefeller died.”
The friend responded, “Why are you crying? You were no kin of his!”
   “That’s why I’m crying!”
You have an inheritance right now as a child of God. It is incorruptible. The foul breath of decay and gnawing tooth of time cannot take it away. It is undefiled. No high-powered lawyer can find a loophole. It will never fade away.

If you understood what you have in Jesus, you would never be jealous of anybody. Ezekiel 44:28 says that God is your inheritance. You have an inheritance that is faultless, flawless, fadeless, and reserved in heaven for you!- Adrian Rogers

How true that is! I’ll never forget the first time I heard the song “I’m a child of the King”. Ever since that day I have been thrilled by the thought. To think that we are joint-heirs with Christ makes you want to shout for joy! Understanding who you are and what you have as a result of the person and work of Christ will keep you going when everything seems to be going wrong. Knowing it is all due to grace leaves us without reason to complain– ever! – HDS

MORNING MANNA

August 11, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

“O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?”– 1 Cor. 15:55
Based on years of observation I think it’s fair to say that death is “the elephant in the room”. As obvious as it is nobody wants to talk about it. After all when is the last time you told your friends to grab a bag of chips and come over to chat about death? Just about everyone wonders what the experience will be like and wants to know what happens after death, but they don’t want to discuss it.

Tim McGraw sang, “Live like you’re dying”, but most people live as though they will never die. They couldn’t be more wrong– “it is appointed unto man once to die..: (Heb. 9:27). As to what happens then there are only two options– heaven or hell, glory or grief. That being the case would it not be wise of us to consider where we’re headed? We often hear people say “Get real”, but when it comes to the reality of death they want to pretend that it will never happen. To them it is a dreadful thought to be avoided at all cost. They would rather listen to music, watch the ball game, or a 1001 other things than to think about the “D” word. But, ignore it or not, you are going to die. We all have that in common.
About three people die every second and one of these days your turn will come- it might be today! The fact is you are dying right now. Your heart is beating a death march to the grave and the next beat could be your last. We are moving toward the grave even as we sleep. We are closer than we’ve ever been. There is no escape from death and there is no way to eliminate the dread of death except through saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Faith turns our feelings upside down, or should I say right side up. Christ causes us to see death as gain rather than loss, the beginning rather than the end, glory rather than grief.

As mysterious and miserable the thought of death might be to you, we have good reason to believe that God’s grace will be sufficient to encourage us at our point of need. I believe God will enable us to see death as a friend instead of a foe and to face it head-on without fear– knowing that as He has promised so will He do, and therefore the best is yet to come!- HDS

MORNING MANNA

August 10, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

“He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.”- (Ps. 91:15).
D. L. Moddy admittedly had many short comings, but God used him in a mighty way. His comments on this verse reveals why. He wrote:

First, “I will deliver.” When God called Moses to go down into Egypt to deliver the children of Israel from the hand of the Egyptians, in all the world there wasn’t a man who, humanly speaking, was less qualified than Moses. He had made the attempt once before to deliver the children of Israel, and he began by delivering one man. He failed in that, and killed an Egyptian, and had to run off into the desert, and stay there forty years. He had tried to deliver the Hebrews in his own way, he was working in his own strength and doing it in the energy of the flesh. He had all the wisdom of the Egyptians, but that didn’t help him. He had to be taken back into Horeb, and kept there forty years in the school of God, before God could trust him to deliver the children of Israel in God’s way. Then God came to him and said, “I have come down to deliver,” and when God worked through Moses three million were delivered as easy as I can turn my hand over. God could do it. It was no trouble when God came on the scene.

Learn the lesson. If we want to be delivered, from every inward and outward foe, we must look to a higher source than ourselves. We cannot do it in our own strength.

When we do what we can, to do as we should, God does what we can’t. I know He does because for more than half-a-century I have been living prayer by prayer, and He has never failed!– HDS

MORNING MANNA

A SPIRIT-FILLED CHURCH
“And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.”–Acts 2:42    I heard a story about a pastor who wasn’t getting much feedback about the sermon he preached. So after the service, he stood in the back of the church to shake hands with people and wait for someone to say something about it. But no one said a word. Finally one woman came by who always had something thoughtful to say, so he asked her, “What did you think of my sermon today? How was it?”
“Pastor,” she said, “your sermon reminded me of the peace and love of God.”
He was relieved to hear that. “Wow,” he said, “I’ve never had anyone actually say that to me before. Tell me, how did my message remind of you of the peace and love of God?”
“Well, like the peace of God, it passed all understanding. And like the love of God, it endured forever.”
Far too many preachers today can take the life-changing, power-packed message of the Word of God and somehow make it dull and uninteresting.
The early church, the church of the first century, was a Spirit-filled church. It was a strong, vibrant, healthy, living church. This early church had passion. They had excitement. They had commitment. They were living in a first-love relationship with Jesus Christ, and they had burning hearts—not a casual attitude. There was spiritual excitement in what they did. They applied themselves to what was taught from the Word of God.
As John Stott said, “The Spirit of God leads the people of God to submit to the Word of God.” They believed in the teaching and preaching of the Bible. This is a primary mission of the church today. And if you are a real believer who has been filled with the Holy Spirit, then you will love the Word of God.–Greg Laurie

MORNING MANNA

August 8, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

“Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.”– Luke 9:44
In this verse, Jesus is alerting the disciples to pay close attention to His upcoming announcement.  This declaration was of supreme importance, having to do with His coming appointment with betrayal and death at Calvary.  There was no information more important to receive and remember than this.  He prefaces His disclosure with the words, “Let these sayings sink down into your ears.”  He was asking them to give Him their undivided attention.  He wanted them to listen clearly and deliberately, not carelessly and casually.  Jesus knew how difficult it would be for the disciples to understand and accept what was in the future for Him.  In spite of Jesus’ repeated declarations of His pending death, the disciples never really comprehended what was going to happen.
We all have this tendency not to listen as closely as we should at times.  I know that I have found myself not listening as carefully as I should have been, and later regretted it.  This underscores the importance of deliberate listening.  “Selective listening” is a term that might describe our hearing habits.  We listen more carefully to some things because we have a greater interest in the subject or the speaker.  But we listen less intently to things we may not be as concerned about.  I have been amazed at times when it is obvious that people are keenly concentrating on some report of scandal or misfortune, but seem unconcerned when hearing about some great doctrinal truth.
We need to learn to discipline ourselves to be good listeners, especially when it comes to the Word of God and matters of eternal significance.  The mind is a great gift from God, but we are responsible to keep it focused on the things it needs to hear.  We cannot afford to miss the messages God has for us through His Word and through those He has stationed to teach it to us.  It is our responsibility to remove distractions and resist the tendency to allow our minds to wander.  There may be times when it is especially hard to hear, perhaps because it is something we have never heard before or something that we do not want to know, or even something that contradicts what we have previously believed.  When God speaks to us from His Word, we need to “Let these sayings sink down into your ears.”– Thomas Smith
