MORNING MANNA

August 7, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

“The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.”–Ps 19:8
Many people think that a godly life–must be a sad and gloomy life. They suppose that Christians have no joy. They have to deny themselves many pleasures. They have to live strictly and soberly. They have to follow the Scriptures. Life must be dreary and joyless to Christians.
So the people talk, who boast of being free from the restraints of the Bible. But, as a matter of fact, the happiest people in this world are those who are keeping God’s commandments. Who ever heard of sin “rejoicing the heart”? Disobedience never made anyone happy–but obedience always gives peace.
There are fresh-water springs in the sea, which continually pour out sweet water beneath all the brackish tides. So in the obedient heart, under all self-denials, there is a spring of joy ever flowing. It is the peace of God which nothing can disturb, a holy fountain whose flow nothing can ever check.– J. R. Miller

WHOLEHEARTEDNESS

August 6, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

WHOLEHEARTEDNESS
“And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God, and in the law, and in the commandments, to seek his God, he did it with all his heart, and prospered.”- 2 Chron. 31:21.
It is a fact that many go mournfully through life in a halfhearted fashion. They drag through the day as though it would be a crime to be happy. They do what they must, on a good day, and no more. Life for them is a burden rather than a blessing. If that describes you, please consider what F. B. Meyer wrote many years ago:

“The man who does his business with all his heart, is sure to prosper. To put your heart into your work is like genius manipulating common materials, till their worth becomes priceless, just because of what has been put into it.

The heart stands for the emotions and affections. What the furnace is to the factory or steamship, that the heart is in the economy of our nature. It is a great thing to love our life work, to have an aim that kindles us whenever we think of it. Those who are so happily circumstanced, cannot be sufficiently thankful. But what of those who are bound to a work which they did not choose and do not like, who find their daily toil irksome and distasteful is there any help for them? Can they possibly learn to do such work from their hearts? Certainly: because of Him who set it, and for whom it may be done.

Love performs the most onerous duties with all its heart, if they conduce to the comfort and help of those whom it loves more than itself. Does not a mother or wife perform tasks from which the hireling would shrink? She does them with all her heart, not considering for a moment the loathesomeness and hardness of the demand. So if we look at our life work as God appointed; if we realize that He has fixed it for us, who determined the orbits of the stars; if we can hear the voice of Jesus saying, “Do this for Me ” there is no further thought of hardship or distaste. Remember to do all your life work for Jesus; do all in his name and for his glory; ask Him to fill your heart with submissive, loyal obedience, and you will find that when you introduce the personal element of Christ service into the meanest acts, they will glisten like a piece of gold tapestry.”

If we did what we should, as we should, when we should it would put delight in the day, sunshine in the soap suds, and joy in our job. He who goes the extra mile, does more than what’s expected of him, and whistles while he works seldom finds cause for complaint. He is happy to be helpful, blessed by blessing.— HDS

CHOICES

August 5, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

“I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before me. I have stuck unto thy testimonies: O LORD, put me not to shame.” –
–
–
-Psalm 119:30-31

The important thing about a man is not where he goes when he is compelled to go, but where he goes when he is free to go where he will….

A man is absent from church Sunday morning. Where is he? If he is in a hospital having his appendix removed his absence tells us nothing about him except that he is ill; but if he is out on the golf course, that tells us a lot. To go to the hospital is compulsory; to go to the golf course, voluntary. The man is free to choose and he chooses to play instead of to pray. His choice reveals what kind of man he is. Choices always do….

I think it might be well for us to check our spiritual condition occasionally by the simple test of compatibility. When we are free to go, where do we go? In what company do we feel most at home? Where do our thoughts turn when they are free to turn where they will? When the pressure of work or business or school has temporarily lifted and we are able to think of what we will instead of what we must, what do we think of then?

The answer to these questions may tell us more about ourselves than we can comfortably accept. But we had better face up to things. We haven’t too much time at the most.

“Lord, as a pastor or teacher I can’t choose to play golf on Sunday morning, but I can choose a lot of other things that are just as revealing of my inner character. Help me to make choices today that are pleasing to You. Amen.”– A. W. Tozer

REPENT

August 4, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

REPENT

“God…commandeth all men everywhere to repent: because he hath appointed a day, in which he will judge the world”– Acts 17:30-31
Maybe you have always thought that Christianity was only for Christians, that you are either a religious person or you are not. But, in fact, the God who created you demands obedience from you, no matter what your personal history or experience may be.
God commands every person, everywhere to repent of their rebellion against Him. By nature, we are all rebels against our good Maker; we prefer to do things our own way, to follow our own course. As our Maker, however, God reserves the right to demand submission to His righteous, perfect will.
Why should you repent? Why should you heed His command? Because He has already circled the day on His calendar in which He will judge every part of His creation, including you. Individuals may resist His authority or ignore His demands, but no one will be able to avoid their appointment with God.
And who will be the judge on that day? Jesus Christ himself. He will judge the very people that have rejected Him and His claims upon their lives. He has already given us a foretaste of His authority and power by rising from the dead (verse 31b).
And so now every person is without excuse. There is no reason not to believe on Jesus Christ; He has proven His divinity and will one day soon appear in all His glory.
How will you see Him? How do you see Him? Have you repented and acknowledged the claims of Jesus Christ upon your life?– Baptist Bible Hour

STUMBLINGBLOCKS

August 3, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

“But take heed lest by any means this liberty of your’s become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.”-– 1 Cor. 8:9
“Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.”1 Cor. 8:13

Far too often the only time we care about how we affect others is when we are seeking their attention and praise, rather than how we might be creating a problem. In many cases the greatest hindrance to a church comes from within rather than from without. Members do things without any consideration for how it might have a negative affect on others. They become a stumblingblock rather than a stepping-stone. Drop outs in a church are common and more often than not it is due to another member of the church.

Some are hurt by the actions of another– whether in word or deed. It is a fact that we often say or do things that are a grief to others. Rather than displaying love we demonstrate a lack of concern for the welfare of others.

Sometimes others are hindered by our attitude. As Frances Ridley Havergal wrote– “ How sad.. that we may hinder without word or act. Wrong feeling is more infectious that wrongdoing, especially the various phases of ill temper, such as gloominess, touchiness, irritability. Do we not know how catching these are?”. It’s true! Many services are spoiled by someone’s attitude. They are a wet-blanket to the whole congregation. Their sour spirit produces a cloud of gloom over everyone.

We ought to be helpers rather than hinders. At this very moment, no doubt, there are people seriously considering leaving their church because of other members. Should they be strong enough to not do so? Of course they should. They ought to ignore the attitude and actions of others. They are in no way justified in leaving. But the offending party should realize that they are an offense and clean up their act! It’s strange how many times the offending party criticizes the “weaker brother” when in truth they are the cause of it. Seems to me the weaker of the two is the one who thinks himself to be the strongest. Have you ever thought about what a horrible sin it is to be a stumblingblock to others? “But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.” ( 1 Cor. 8:12). Please think about it! Be blameless. — HDS
