PRECIOUS PROMISES
“Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” 2 Peter 1:4
This verse is important, informational, and inspirational. To escape “the corruption that is in the world” is wonderful, but to be “partakers of the divine nature” is even more glorious. It staggers the mind to think about it. It’s something that is far beyond the reach of man’s natural abilities. It is possible because the great God “that cannot lie”(Titus 1:2) has given us “exceeding great and precious promises.”
Although we are weak and helpless,”his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue”(2 Peter 1:3). God’s children are not short-changed in any sense whatsoever! Notice, he said,”all things”. Everything we need for “life and godliness” is freely supplied by the grace of God. We need only claim what He has already given.
Seeing that all this is true, how can you say that the Bible is a boring book or that you don’t have time to read it? I urge you today to plunge into its depths, discover what He has promised, and claim what He has provided. Do this and you will find that for every need there is a promise. Search for them like they were precious jewels. In doing so you will discover that these gems of grace are exactly what you need.- HDS, 4-21-15

WINNING OVER WORRY
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known unto God.” Philippians 4:6
Someone defined worry as “a small trickle of fear that meanders through the mind until it cuts a channel into which all other thoughts are drained.” James describes the danger like this–“A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”(James 1:8). The worrier is like the mule that starved to death while standing between two stacks of hay, because he couldn’t make up his mind which one to eat out of.Seems that I’ve met a lot of his relatives! They sometimes say,”I’m worried sick”, and indeed they are. Worry can send you to an early grave.
The fact of the matter is that worry affects us in every way: emotionally, physically, socially, and spiritually. Worry can be deadly. When the Bible says,”Be careful for nothing” we ought to take it as a serious warning. God is looking out for our welfare! Heed His warnings, obey His commands, and claim His promises. A child of God in the will of God has nothing to worry about. When trouble comes, go to God in prayer. When your burden is heavy, cast “all your care upon him” and leave it there.- HDS, 10-25-12

CONFIDENCE IN OUR CREATOR
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”–Hebrews 11:1-3
Sometimes we are too smart, at least in our own estimation, for our own good. We attribute our accomplishments to our abilities and believe, given enough time, money, and effort, that we can pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps—-it’s called “humanism”. Our confidence is in the creature rather than the Creator, in scholars and scientists rather than the Scripture, in our reasoning rather than God’s revelation.
The Bible-believer however turns this up-side- down, actually right-side-up. His belief in the first verse of the Bible–“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth”, gives him the key to unlock the mysteries of life. His confidence in the Creator and belief in the Bible settles the topic of discussion. By simply believing that God exist and that He has the wisdom and power to create “the heaven and the earth”, it becomes easy to believe everything else He says. And that produces peace that passeth all understanding.
Confidence in the Creator creates contentment in the Christian. Walking by faith we have blessed assurance that the One who created us cares for us. Regardless of our situation, He knows, He cares, and He can help! Confidence in our Creator gives courage in our struggles, comfort in our sorrow, contentment in our situation, calm in our storms, compulsion in our service, and cheerfulness in our suffering. That is a soft pillow upon which we can rest our weary heads and sleep at night. Every Christian has cause for contentment and a reason to rejoice, because his confidence is in the Creator rather than the creature. And there is no one single instance where God has failed. He cannot lie and He cannot lose. You can trust Him. He who is “Faithful and True” will not fail.- HDS, 8-9-13

THE HILL OF HOPE
Spurgeon said, “The hill of comfort is the hill of Calvary; the house of consolation is built with the wood of the cross–” And, O how true that is! Our consolation is indeed found at a hill called Mt. Calvary. From that mount flows mercy. From Golgotha we find grace. In the cross is our confidence. From the cross is our comfort.
The cross is crucial! From the Savior’s suffering and sacrifice comes salvation. From His agony comes access and assurance. By it we are saved, secured, sanctified, sustained and satisfied. It is there, and only there, that we are able to triumph over sin, death, hell, and the grave. It is the hill of help and hope for hell-bound sinners. Here they find help and happiness of the highest sort.
By His death we are delivered. In His sacrifice we are saved. From His crucifixion we find comfort. Of His suffering we sing. With His offering we are over-joyed. Therefore we should —
Look there for salvation— it procures redemption.
Live there for sanctification— it provides renewal.
Linger there for satisfaction— it produces rejoicing.
Our very survival depends on always “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith”(Heb. 12:2). We must “consider Him”(Heb. 12:3) with confidence, for counsel, courage, and comfort. Those who are distracted from Him get discouraged– they grow weary and faint. But those who focus on Him endure.
It is on that hill of hope that we see the character of the world, the compassion of the Father, the commitment of Christ, the cost of salvation, and the consequences of sin. And since “He died for all” (2 Cor. 5:15) there is room at the cross for you. Leave the valley of death, doom, and despair, and look to the hill of hope. As the old song says, “Though millions have come, there is still room for one. There’s room at the cross for you”. There you will find help, hope, and happiness. Linger no longer in the valley of doom and gloom. Come to Calvary and find comfort in Christ. — HDS, 10-26-13, revised.
