MORNING MANNA           11-18-24

MORNING MANNA          11-18-24

Blogger Tim Challies wrote: Some of my favorite poems are those that pick up on one particularly important line and then repeat it throughout, thus consistently building upon a theme. This is the case with an old poem titled “When I Get to the End of the Way.” The poet looks forward to the end of her journey through life–to the end of her way. In one collection I’ve seen it attributed to H. Cole, in another to simply B. P. C., and in another Margaret Baker Culp. Either way, I hope you find it encouraging.

My life is a wearisome journey,
I’m sick with the dust and the heat,
The rays of the sun beat upon me,
The briars are wounding my feet.
But the city to which I am journeying,
Will more than my trials repay,
All the toils of the road will seem nothing,
When I get to the end of the way.

There are so many hills to climb upward,
I often am longing for rest,
But He who appoints me my pathway,
Knows just what is needful and best.
I know in his word he has promised,
That my strength shall be as my day,
And the toils of the road will seem nothing,
When I get to the end of the way.

He loves me too well to forsake me,
Or give me one trial too much,
All his people have been dearly purchased,
And Satan can never claim such.
By and by I shall see him and praise him,
In the city of unending day,
And the toils of the road will seem nothing,
When I get to the end of the way.

When the last feeble step has been taken,
And the gates of the city appear,
When the beautiful songs of the angels,
Float out on my listening ear.
When all that now seems so mysterious,
Shall be plain and as clear as the day,
Then the toils of the road will seem nothing,
As I get to the end of the way.

Though now I am footsore and weary,
I shall rest when I’m safely at home,
I know I’ll receive a glad welcome,
For the Savior himself has said Come.
So when I am weary in body,
And sinking in spirit I say,
All the toils of the road will seem nothing,
When I get to the end of the way.

WE CAN’T EVEN IMAGINE

Nearly every Christian thinks about the song “Amazing Grace” when they hear the name of John Newton. However they have never read his “Letters” or articles. They have been a blessing to me and the following is an example. I hope it helps.- HDS

Our most enlarged ideas of our future glory are faint and imperfect.  Who can describe or conceive the happiness of Heaven? It will be as unlike as possible — to this wilderness of sin and sorrow where we are now confined. Here on earth, we are in a warfare — but then we shall enter into perfect rest. We now cry out, “O that I had wings like a dove! For then would I fly away and be at REST.” (Psalm 55:6)

Heaven will be a rest from all SIN. No ‘unclean thing’ shall ever defile or disturb us forever! We shall be free from all indwelling sin. This alone would be worth dying for! Indwelling sin is a burden under which all the redeemed must groan, while they sojourn in the body.

And those who are most spiritual — are most deeply affected with shame, humiliation, and grief, on account of their sins — because they have the clearest views . . .
  of the holiness of God,
of the spirituality of His law,
of the love of Christ, and
of the deceitfulness of their own hearts!
Therefore the Apostle Paul, though perhaps in grace and talents, in zeal and usefulness, was distinguished above all saints — accounted himself the ‘chief of sinners,’ (1 Timothy 1:15) ‘less than the least of all saints,’ (Ephesians 3:8) and cried out under the disparity he felt between what he actually was — and what he desired to be- “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?”‭‭Romans‬ ‭7‬:‭24‬ ‭

But we shall not carry this burden of sin beyond the grave. The hour of death shall free us from our inbred enemies (the inseparable attendants of this frail perishing nature) which now trouble us, and we shall see them no more forever!

Heaven will also be a rest from all outward AFFLICTIONS, which, though necessary, and, under the influence of Divine grace, are profitable — yet they are grievous to bear. But in Heaven, they will no more be necessary. Where there is no sin — there shall be no sorrow.“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”Rev. 21‬:‭4‬ ‭

Heaven will also be a rest from SATAN’S TEMPTATIONS. How busy is this adversary of God and man — what various arts and schemes he employs! What surprising force, what constant assiduity does he employ to ensnare, distress, and terrify those who by grace have escaped from his servitude! He says, like Pharaoh of old, “I will pursue, I will overtake, I will destroy!” (Exodus 15:9) He follows them to the last stage of life — but he can follow them no farther. The moment of their departure out of the body — shall place them beyond his reach forever!

Heaven will also be a rest from UNSATISFIED DESIRES. Here on earth, the more we drink — the more we thirst. But in heaven, our highest wishes shall be crowned and exceeded! We shall rest in full communion with Him whom we love, and shall no more complain of interruptions and imperfections, and a careless heart.

Here on earth — we obtain a little glimpse of His presence, when He brings us into His banqueting-house, and spreads His banner of love over us! And how gladly would we remain in such a desirable frame! How unwilling are we to ‘come down’ from the mount! But these pleasing and holy seasons are quickly ended, and often give place to some sudden unexpected trial, which robs us of all that sweetness in which we lately rejoiced. But when we ascend the holy hill of God above — we shall never again ‘come down’! We shall be forever with the Lord, never offend Him, and never be separated from Him “As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.”Psalm‬ ‭17‬:‭15‬ ‭

Here on earth — we find a mixture of evil in our most holy moments! When we approach nearest to God, we have the liveliest sense of our defilement, and how much we fall short in every branch of duty, and in every temper of our hearts. But when we shall see Jesus as He is — we shall be fully transformed into His image, and be perfectly like Him!

“Yes, dear friends, we are already God’s children, and we can’t even imagine what we will be like when Christ returns. But we do know that when He comes — we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He really is!” 1 John 3:2

“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, Neither have entered into the heart of man, The things which God hath prepared for them that love him.”‭‭1 Cor.‭2‬:‭9‬ ‭

WAKING UP IN HEAVEN

“We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” 2 Cor.5:8

It is wonderful that believers living upon the earth can have such blessed confidence as to face death without fear. They see heaven as all gain and no loss, the beginning rather than the end. Now if that is true of those yet bound to this planet, just think how those in heaven must feel! For us it is anticipation, for them it is actuality. They have entered into their inheritance and are present with the Lord. It doesn’t get any better than that!

As Christians we don’t fret about going to heaven, but some do fear the death experience itself. “Will it hurt?”, is the question most on our mind. God, however, has taken care of that also. As this story shows–for the child of God there is nothing to fear. Your dear departed loved one didn’t suffer and neither will you. Think about it like this:

Peter Marshall tells the story of a young boy about four years old who had a terminal disease. At first he was simply sick and in bed and didn’t understand his condition, but eventually he realized that he wasn’t going to get better and would never again play with his friends. One morning he asked his mother, “Am I going to die?” And she said, “Yes, dear.” “Mommy, what is death like? Will it hurt?” The mother ran out of the room to the kitchen and leaned against the refrigerator, her knuckles gripped white to keep from crying. She prayed and asked the Lord to give her an answer for her son. Suddenly, an idea came and she went back to his room and sat down on the bed. “Do you remember how you used to play outside all day and when you came inside at night you were so tired you just fell down on the couch and slept? In the morning you woke up in your own bed. During the night your father would come along and pick you up and carry you to your own bed. That’s what death is like. One night you lie down and go to sleep and your Heavenly Father picks you up and carries you to your own bed. In the morning when you wake up, you’re in your own room in heaven.” The little boy smiled and nodded. And several weeks later he died peacefully. That’s what death is like for the Christian. Satan’s hold is broken. The fear is taken away. Jesus came to break the bondage of death. Amen. HDS

For the Christian death is good-night down here and good-morning up there!

Unanswered Prayer

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭28‬ ‭

Sometimes we want answers and God isn’t talking. Sometimes we experience “needs” and God isn’t giving. How do you explain it? How can a loving God ignore our requests, crush our dreams, and strip us of our happiness? Should we really thank God for unanswered prayers? Yes–we should. Although we don’t understand His ways, He does all things well–even when He denies our desires. God’s answers are much wiser than our prayers and He loves us too much to let us have whatever we want.

We need to learn to look at things as He does, the best we can. Our main desire should not be for comfort and cheer, but for Christ-like character, and that is what God is working to create in our life(Rom. 8:29). Contrary to what we think or desire, pain is often better for us than pleasure, loss is better than gain, and sorrow is better than joy in the plan God is working out in our lives. We often need the opposite of what we desire, we just don’t realize it. Sometimes we need disaster rather than deliverance, because that’s what it takes to make us humble and helpful.

When God withholds what we desire it doesn’t mean He isn’t giving us what is best. God loves you just as much when He denies your request as He does when He grants it. So when it seems that the heavens are brass and God is deaf, take comfort in the fact that God knows what we need most and He gives us what is best. Trust Him instead of trying to understand Him, and thank Him for unanswered prayers!- HDS, 11-11-09

FEELINGS AND FAITH

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” (1 John 5:13)William MacDonald wrote,”Some of us will be eternally thankful to God for this verse because it taught us that assurance of salvation comes first and foremost through the Word of God and not through feelings. The Bible was written, among other reasons, so that those who believe on the Name of the Son of God can know that they have eternal life.
We can be thankful that assurance does not come through feelings, because they fluctuate with every passing day. “God does not ask the soul to say, ‘Thank God I feel so good,’ but turns the eye another way, to Jesus and His Word.” When someone once asked Martin Luther, “Do you feel that your sins have been forgiven?” he replied, “No, but I’m as sure of it as that there’s a God in heaven. For feelings come and feelings go/ And feelings are deceiving/ My warrant is the Word of God/ Naught else is worth believing.” C. I. Scofield reminds us that “justification takes place in the mind of God and not in the nervous system of the believer.”

H. A. Ironside used to say, “I don’t know I am saved because I feel happy, but I feel happy because I know I am saved.” And he knew he was saved by the written Word of God.

When we read that the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the sons of God (Rom. 8:16), we must remember that the Spirit witnesses to us primarily through the Scriptures. We read John 6:47, for instance, “He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” We know that we have trusted in Christ for our eternal salvation; He is our only hope for heaven. The Spirit of God therefore witnesses to us through this verse that we are sons of God.

Of course, there are other means of assurance. We know we are saved because we love the brethren; because we hate sin and practice righteousness; because we love the Word of God; and because we have the instinct of prayer. But the first and fundamental means of assurance is the surest, most dependable thing in the universe, the Word of God.

George Cutting said it well in his memorable tract Safety, Certainty and Enjoyment: “It’’s the blood that makes us safe; it’’s the Word that makes us sure.”– William MacDonald
