PEACE IS POSSIBLE

“Let not your heart be troubled—Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you-“–John 14:1, 27

Sometimes we act as though we have no control over our lives–peace doesn’t seem possible. But the little word “Let” tells us otherwise. Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled”. So, if you are truly a child of God peace is possible. The choice is yours.

Jesus didn’t say, “Keep yourself from trouble”. That would be impossible (Job 14:1). However, although we will have trouble, we don’t have to be troubled by our troubles. Maybe you are thinking, “That doesn’t seem possible”. But, who are you going to believe–yourself or the Lord? Jesus promised that peace is possible and Paul proved it is possible (Phil. 4:11). If you will just admit that it’s possible you will have come a long, long way. Most of our fear and worry is caused by a feeling of hopelessness. If you can just see that peace really is possible you will be encouraged to pursue it. Then you will discover that it is also profitable.

Regardless of what you are going through, and contrary to the way you might feel, peace is indeed possible. Christ always provides what He promises! Get into the Word and find out what He says and then trust Him to do as He promised. That’s the path to peace. I’m not asking you to believe me. I’m begging you to trust Him. When you do amazing things happen.”Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusteth in thee.”(Isaiah 26:3). Trust in the Lord brings tremendous blessings, one of which is “peace that passeth all understanding “. – HDS, 4-17-10

THE EXAMPLE OF THE PINE TREE

“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” ‭‭James‬ ‭1‬:‭2‬-‭4‬ ‭

One day a boy and his father went into the mountains. They took shelter from a storm in the lee of some great gray boulders that lay like sleeping giants close to the crest of a lonely ridge. As the two looked upward, they saw the wind lay its grim hands on a mountain pine that towered from the summit of the ridge. It was a sentinel that could escape no danger, an outpost to receive the first shock of the enemy’s attack. Savagely the wind tore at it, shook it violently, and howled through the branches.

To the boy, the tree, strong though it was, seemed about to be torn to pieces. “Look, Father!” he said, pining upward, “what the wind is doing to that pine!” The full fury of the blast just then made the pine shudder and sway. It heaved desperately against the black sky.

“Storms are an old story to that tree,” said the father. “A tree like that lives in a struggle from the time it is high enough to catch the first breath of air. Tennyson says a tree is ‘storm-strengthened on a windy site.’ The strongest trees are always those that have weathered the greatest number of gales. Besides, the question is not what is happening to the tree, but what is happening in the tree.”

“The pine does not really seem to mind fighting the storm, does it?” the boy asked.

“No, because it is able to withstand the strongest wind,” the father answered. “It is the same with us. It really does not matter what happens to us, but it matters a great deal what happens in us.” (copied)

There are a great many folks who need to stop resisting and resenting the storms and leave the results with God. They need to bend with the wind and let God do His work within! HDS

PEACE FOR PRISONERS

“And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed”.–Acts 16:26

Do you ever feel trapped? Don’t we all at some time or another? Maybe this is one of those days when you feel like a prisoner to your unpleasant circumstances. Perhaps you feel doomed to a life of despair, forced to live without help or hope. It’s in times like these that we need to be reminded of the greatness of God’s power. And, that’s just what we see in our text. Paul and Silas had been beaten and cast into prison, but God moved the earth to deliver them! If it fits with His purpose He will do the same for you.

In 1904, J.R. Miller wrote:”There is no prison too strong for God to break open; there are no chains too heavy for Him to snap asunder, there are no walls too thick for Him to shatter. There are other kinds of prisons besides those built with stone–prisons of trial, of temptation, of trouble, of circumstances. If we are in any of these prisons, God is just as able to bring us out of them!”

Dear friend, don’t give up hope. With God all things are possible and as long as you are on this earth God still has a plan for you. When things seem most hopeless, remember–if need be, God will move all heaven and earth to meet your need. He’s done it before and He will do it again. – HDS,  2-2-10

STIR UP THE GIFT“

Stir up the gift of God–“ 2 Timothy 1:6

Maintaining enthusiasm can be difficult, especially for Christians who are going through tough times. At the beginning of our Christian life we are excited–“pumped-up” as some would say. We are so thrilled with our new life in Christ that we can’t keep our feet on the ground. If you are saved you know exactly what I mean. We start off with high ideals and a wagon load of determination, it seems that nothing can stop us. We are highly motivated and we press on toward our goals, accepting challenges that stretch us to our limits. We are excited and it shows. Life is adventurous. We can’t wait to see what tomorrow holds.

Then “it” happens–whatever “it” is. We’re slowed down by some unexpected and unpleasant experience. We’re disappointed, but we press on because we know we should. Then another “it” hits us and this time our recovery period is longer. We are still headed in the right direction, but we’ve lost our zip, now we’re dragging our feet as we trudge along. Then, from out of nowhere, another “it” smacks us, and another and another. Finally we find ourself living in a survival mode, just trying to hang on for dear life!

It might be that Timothy was in this condition when Paul wrote this letter, telling him to “stir up the gift of God”. That simply means to fan the embers, kindle, or keep the fire alive. But, notice that, although Paul tells him what to do, he doesn’t tell him how to do it. The idea seems to be, do whatever it takes. Dear friend, that’s what we must do.

For some that means going into your prayer closet, falling on your face and crying out to God in a spirit of desperation. Others need to knock the dust off their Bible and get into the Word and stay in it until the fire is ablaze. Some need to exercise their gift God has given them. Life gets stale when you don’t live what you learn. Students ought to become servants. As Vance Havner said, “We need to take ourselves by the nape of the neck and make ourselves do the thing we know we ought to do, whether we feel like it or not.” He was right. You will be amazed how much better you will feel when you put your head on the pillow at night knowing you’ve done your duty during the day. Do with all your might what God has planned for you and your life will be a bright and shinning light in the midst of a sin-darkened world. HDS, 1-29-10

LET THERE BE LIGHT

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”–Matthew 5:16

A young girl once consulted with her minister. “I cannot stick it out any longer. I am the only Christian in the factory where I work. I get nothing but taunts and sneers. It is more than I can stand. I am going to resign.”

“Will you tell me,” asked the minister, “where lights are placed?”

“What has that to do with it?” the young Christian asked him rather bluntly.

“Never mind,” the minister replied. “Answer my question: ‘Where are lights placed?’ ”

“I suppose in dark places,” she replied.

“Yes, and that is why you have been put in that factory where there is such spiritual darkness and where there is no other Christian to shine for the Lord.”

The young Christian realized for the first time the opportunity that was hers. She felt she could not fail God by allowing her light to go out. She went back to the factory with renewed determination to let her light shine in that dark corner. Before long, she was the means of leading nine other girls to the Light.

As I read that story I couldn’t help but think about what might have happened had the girl left her job – leaving her coworkers in darkness. It could have resulted in her light being the last light some of them would ever see. – HDS
