JESUS IS COMING–MAY 21st?

May 20, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Since I started preaching 45 years ago, I’ve heard just about every prediction imaginable. Here’s the latest, and I suspect you’ve heard about it, Harold Camping claims that the rapture will take place May 21st, 2011. That’s tomorrow! Wouldn’t it be wonderful if that was the case? But Mr. Camping will join the long list of others who have said the same thing. Actually he is already on that list. This isn’t Camping’s first such prediction. He predicted the same in 1994. He even sent me a copy of his book entitled,”1994″ in which he predicted that the rapture would happen that year. It didn’t happen then and I doubt that it will happen tomorrow. The fact is that neither he nor we know when it will happen.

If you think such predictions are harmless you need to think again. False teachers have led many astray and they’ve left a bad impression before others. This is why a lot of unsaved people think that we Christians are a bunch of nuts. That’s sad. I also feel sorry for Camping’s supporters–especially one 60 year old retired transit worker who invested his entire life savings of $140,000 into the campaign. He is just one of many who wasted their money spreading heresy. I can’t help but think how much better it would have been had this money been spend proclaiming the gospel. Only God knows how many people will be hurt and how much damage will be done by false teachers such as this. It’s significant!

However, make no mistake about it–Jesus is coming! That’s what the Bible teaches and that’s what Jesus promised (“I will come again”-John 14:3). Although we don’t know when we believe with all our heart that He will return. If the Bible is wrong about that it can’t be trusted in regards to anything else.

Now, you are free to believe what you please, but you had better consider the consequences of being wrong and find out what is right. It’s silly to say,”I don’t believe the Bible” when you’ve never investigated its claims. I believe if you honestly examine the Bible you will come to believe that “The Bible is a book man could not have written if he would and would not have written if he could”. It has proved itself over and over again, and there is no reason to question, doubt, or reject what it says, and that includes what it teaches about the coming of the Lord. Jesus promised He would come and I believe He will. No man, nor even the angels, know when He is coming, but that doesn’t change the fact that He will. Would you be ready? Not unless you have received Christ as your Lord and Savior.

RELIEVED BY REST

May 9, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Recompense to no man evil for evil–live peaceably with all–avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he is thirst, give him drink–Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.–Romans 12:17-21

While I rejoice about what I am in Christ, and take no credit for it, I am ashamed of what I am by nature and I take all the blame for it.  You’ve heard of “Dirty Harry”? Well sometimes I feel like “Dirty Dave”. In other words, by nature I want to “get even”, “make the guilty pay”, exact revenge. Were it the “old days”, without Christ, I fear I would have been a vigilante. I’m not proud of that. I know it’s wrong. I’m just being honest. I am weak in this area and have to be on guard constantly.

I tend to get terriblily upset when I see innocent people mistreated. I am troubled even more when I feel I am the “innocent” party. I can’t stand bullies, yet as a teen that’s exactly what I was. Now, I never want to hurt people again–oops, except maybe those who hurt others, those who are unfair or unjust. So, as you can see, I still have a tendency to do wrong. Chances are, many of you have the same problem. And it’s a problem strictly forbidden by God’s Word. Please read those verses and ask yourself the question “Is that what I’m doing”. Or, do I want to make the guilty pay?

When we have this attitude it consumes us and drives us and colors our thinking regarding everything in life. All we can think about is revenge, and we might go about getting it in several ways– physical abuse, verbal abuse, condemning them, making demands on them, nagging at them, pouting, ignoring them, withholding needs, refusing to grant desires –in general, we just want to make life miserable for them. Read that list again and think about your attitude and consider the fact that you have no right to do what you’re doing. The following article by Dr. Paul Chappell sheds a lot of light on our subject:

George Atley was killed while serving with the Central African Mission. There were no witnesses, but the evidence indicates that Atley was confronted by a band of hostile tribesmen. He was carrying a fully loaded, 10-chamber Winchester rifle and had to choose either to shoot his attackers and run the risk of negating the work of the mission in that area, or not to defend himself and be killed. When his body was later found in a stream, it was evident that he had chosen the latter. Nearby lay his rifle-all ten chambers still loaded. He had made the supreme sacrifice, motivated by his burden for lost souls and his unswerving devotion to his Saviour.

What justice is there in the death of the innocent? What justice is there in good people with good intentions being persecuted or killed? Why is recompense or revenge not exacted on those evil workers in this world who would take the lives of others? Stories of innocent people dying at the hand of wicked people can stir anger in our hearts, yet as Paul taught the Thessalonians in 2 Thessalonians, God’s judgement is far greater than any we could exact.

Paul continues his letter in 2 Thessalonians 1:6-7 with the following comfort to the persecuted church, “Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels.” The word recompense Paul uses speaks of the judgement God will bring upon those who harm His children.

God knows what happens in your life. He sees the injustices, the hurt, and the pain. Don’t think that God is so great that He does not notice the small acts in your life. But just as God sees injustices, He calls you to ignore them, even forgive them.

Yours is not the place to exact judgement. That job belongs to God, and rightly so for He can exact judgement better than we ever could. Yet rather than worrying, stressing, plotting and planning, God calls you to rest, “And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels.”

When persecuted, rest. When unjustly treated, rest. When hated and despised, rest. Realize that seeking revenge hurts no one but yourself, and claim God’s promise of rest to those who trust His judgement.

Consider the words of preacher C.H. Spurgeon on the subject of persecution, “The good man has his enemies. He would not be like his Lord if he had not. If we were without enemies we might fear that we were not the friends of God, for the friendship of the world is enmity to God.”

Following God will bring persecution, yet God offers rest to those who walk with Him. Rather than pursuing revenge, enjoy the rest of God, knowing that His judgement will be exacted on evildoers in His time.

Think about it like this–the coming of Jesus will bring retribution to the adversaries, but it brings “rest” (relief, refreshment, and restoration) to the afflicted. In that assurance we can rest, rather than taking matters into our own hands and making matters worse. His coming will make all the wrongs right. Rest your weary soul on that precious promise.Think about it!

UNDERSTANDING CHILDREN

April 30, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

I received an email from Bro. Kenneth, our assistant pastor, the other day that blessed my heart like no other in a long long time. As I read it to Bev we both were near tears –realizing that someone realized this. It was so good that I asked him to share his feelings with you this coming Sunday. It pertains to the importance of teaching teens.
The Bible puts a lot of emphasis on parents training their children. One of the most familiar verses is found in Ephesians 6:4,”–provoke not your children to wrath; but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”
Let me give you some advice about this. One of the first things you need to know about this is that children are sinners. They are not the sweet little innocent things you think they are. Maybe this story will help you understand.
I recently read about a precious little girl walked into a pet shop last Saturday (the day before Easter) and asked, “Excuthe me, thir, do you have any widdle bunny wabbits?”

The shopkeeper’s heart melted. He got down on his knee so that he was on her level, and said, “Do you want a widdle white wabbit or a thoft, fuffy bwack wabbit, or one like that widdle bwown wabbit over there?”

The little girl blushed, rocked on her heels, put her hands on her knees, leaned forward and replied, “I don’t weally fink my pyfon cares.”

Dear friend, we better be glad that children don’t grow physically to adult size in the first year or two–we would be in big trouble! Stop by the nursery sometime and watch the kids for a while. It just might be the eye-opening experience that you need. Those kiddos are selfish, tempermental, loud, angry, and very vocal about what they want. They will scream, yell, stomp their feet, push, pull hair, and do whatever they’re able to do, just to get their way. It reminds me of some churches! It is an amazing exhibition of a sinful nature manifesting itself. It actually reminds me of the behavior I see in people who are much older.

Do you want to know what’s wrong with the world? Watch the nursery–that will give you a clue. Some people grow older, but not wiser. We don’t learn how to love one another and live with one another until we are redeemed by Christ, reconcilied to God, indwelt by the Spirit, and educated in the Scriptures. Sadly, many aren’t there yet. Until a person matures spiritually they are a detriment to society.

EARTH DAY VS EASTER

April 27, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

I am amazed, confused, and angry regarding many people’s attitude toward President Obama. In their mind, it seems that he can do no wrong. His supporters continue to defend him regardless of what he does or doesn’t do. Consider this example from an article by Charlie Butts:

earth worship smallPresident Barack Obama had a lot to say about Earth Day in a presidential proclamation — but apparently ignored another major occasion.

On Good Friday, the White House issued an eight-paragraph proclamation honoring the 41st observance of Earth Day. The president, however, neglected to offer a proclamation on the centuries-old celebration of Easter — an omission that some Christian leaders find troubling.

Dr. Robert Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas, offered these remarks to OneNewsNow:

“On one hand, you have a president who never met a Muslim holiday he didn’t like, or at least wasn’t willing to issue a proclamation for,” he says, referring to the White House’s many statements honoring Muslim holidays. “Yet he turns around and ignores the most important holiday on the Christian calendar — and you have the White House wondering why it is that one in five Americans believe the president’s a Muslim.”

Jeffress says he can think of two reasons why President Obama seems to be so absentminded about Christianity.

“Either he is really getting bad counsel from strategists who are telling him that it’s politically expedient to denigrate Christianity and yet elevate other world religions like Islam,” he offers. “And if it’s a case of bad advice, Republicans better pray that those advisors stay in place through the 2012 election cycle.”

Secondly, Jeffress says another possible explanation is that in spite of what the president says, “deep down inside of him there is something that keeps him from making the public proclamations about Christianity.” He also points to other incidents, such as a speech in Turkey where President Obama said America does not consider itself a Christian nation.

I just don’t get it! How can professing Christians keep coming to his rescue and “tooting his horn”? Page after page of documentation could be given proving that he often takes a stance that is un-American and un-Christian, and yet these folks continue to defend and support him. Not only that– they criticize those who criticize him, as though we are the ones who are un-American and un-Christian. Well, as I said, “I am amazed, confused and angry!”. THINK ABOUT IT!

BOASTING

April 18, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

We just observed the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War and as you might expect there was a lot of foolish talk. Here’s one lame example of trying to find something humorous about it:

A trio of old veterans were bragging about the heroic exploits of their
ancestors one afternoon down at the VFW hall.

“My great grandfather, at age 12,” one declared proudly, “was the youngest
drummer boy at Gettysburg.”

“Mine,” boasted another, “helped load the cannon at Ft Sumter that started
the whole war 150 years ago today.”

“I’m the only soldier in my family,” confessed vet number three, “but if my
great grandfather was living today he’d be the most famous man in the
world.”

“Really? What’d he do?” his friends wanted to know.

“Nothing much. But he would be 168 years old.”

Well, I guess you can always find something to brag about if you try hard enough! Have you noticed that just about everyone likes to brag about something, and it goes beyond the “fish tales” regarding who caught the biggest fish. You can find people “weaving yarns” everywhere and they will brag about anything if it makes them appear better at something than someone else. We just can’t seem to accept the fact that we are not the best or most important person on earth.

Nearly all our conflicts revolve around our attitude concerning self–our inflated view of our goodness or importance. That’s why we speak so much about “our rights”. We feel we deserve more, bigger, and better than others. And that creates contention.

The truth of the matter is that none of us have anything to brag about. If we could see ourselves through God’s eyes we would realize that the very best among us are nothing but sinners. The only good thing about anyone is Jesus. We might fail or sin in different ways, but we all are dirty, rotten, vile sinners, undeserving of anything good. Even the worse people might do some “good deed”, but that doesn’t make them good. None of us are good. None of us have anything to brag about. None of us have cause to compare ourself to anyone. The only standard by which we have a right to compare ourselves is the perfect Son of God, and none of us measure up to Him. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Therefore we have nothing to brag about. That’s why Paul wrote,”But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ–“(Gal. 6:14). Now that’s something worth boasting about, and all the praise goes to Him and none to us. Think about it!
