PATIENCE AND HOPE

May 19, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning– Psalm 30:5

Weeping does indeed endure. In fact, the night of weeping can sometimes appear to be endless. When sorrow comes over us in waves, when disappointments follow hard on the heels of each other, when physical pain wracks our body — the night stretches on and on.

But here is the great consolation of Scripture. Joy is coming! It may seem to linger, but it is irresistibly moving toward you and will reach you with the darkness-shattering power of the dawn. Now matter how severe the shadows, no matter how stormy the darkness, once the dawn comes the night is easily and quickly forgotten. No darkness is so great that the coming of the Son does not drive it away.

For the Christian, the best is always yet to come. Is the energy and beauty of youth behind you? The best is yet to come. Has health and strength left you? The best is yet to come. Have you lost a loved one to that old enemy Death? The best is yet to come.

Weeping may endure; there are sorrows that simply cannot be faced without tears. But joy is coming…dawn is approaching…the best is yet to come. (From “A Good Thing”)

COMFORTERS

May 18, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.–2 Corinthians 1:3-4
Serving God can be a simple matter. You don’t have to be rich or have a college education to be used of God. All you need is compassion. But that’s the problem, too many people don’t care–if they did it would show. They would find a way to express their concern. This story from “Senior Living” illustrates what I’m talking about:

There’s a story of a lady who kept an ordinary cardboard box sitting on a bookcase in her home. The box was filled with notes, cards, and letters, offering love and encouragement at a time when her life was filled with sadness.

She was housebound for several years caring for her husband who had Alzheimer’s disease. As each card arrived, it provided her and her husband with a cheerful message telling of the sender’s prayers, love, and support. The words on the cards were often exactly what she needed to make it through the day.

When her husband passed away, and she moved to rebuild her life without him, she began sending cards to others who were experiencing the same kind of pain, remembering how much they helped her.

It doesn’t take long to send a simple note saying, “I’m praying for you” or “You are in my thoughts today.” With the technological advances of our world today, it’s easy to send someone a quick e-mail of encouragement, but there is still nothing like holding a card in your hand, knowing that the sender took time to think of you and your situation.

George William Childs, American publisher who lived from 1829-1894, once said, “Do not keep the alabaster box of your love and friendship sealed up until your friends are dead. Fill their lives with sweetness. Speak approving, cheering words while their ears can hear them and while their hearts can be thrilled and made happier. The kind things you mean to say when they are gone, say before they go.”

Ask God to make you a blessing today in someone’s life who may need a note of encouragement and love. Continually pray that His presence will surround those in your life who are going through difficult times.

Those who care do. Those who don’t don’t. So, what are you doing? –Bro. Stone

A WORK TO DO

May 17, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

NOTE: Those who normally receive Morning Manna by e-mail will not be receiving it until I can get my computer problem corrected. It will, however, continue to be posted here on our web site. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.
For to me to live is Christ—. Philippians 1:21
Some poor souls grow so weary with the struggle of life that they yearn for it to end, and some take the next step. They are so troubled by their troubles that they decide life is not worth the living. How sad, and Oh how foolish!
If you are alive it is for a God-given purpose. Regardless of how bitter the battle, or how rough the road, or how difficult the duty, you are alive because God has a work for you to do. It is not ours to decide if it is worth the work, or if the reward will be reason enough to continue–our duty, and eventually our delight, is to do our duty, regardless of the degree of difficulty. Don’t worry about whether or not you will be successful or appreciated, just do your job –leave the results with God. He commands us to be faithful, not fruitful or famous. Winning His smile of approval is all that matters.
Here’s something I found in my notes that might encourage you. I don’t know who wrote these words, but I know they have helped me and perhaps they will do the same for you:
LET us examine our capacities and gifts, and then put them to the best use we may. As our own view of life is of necessity partial, I do not find that we can do better than to put them absolutely in God’s hand, and look to Him for the direction of our life-energy. God can do great things with our lives, if we but give them to Him in sincerity. He can make them useful, uplifting, heroic. God never wastes anything. God never forgets anything. God never loses anything. As long as we live we have a work to do. We shall never be too old for it, nor too feeble. Illness, weakness, fatigue, sorrow,–none of these things can excuse us from this work of ours. That we are alive today is proof positive that God has something for us to do today.

LIFE AS A TRIANGLE

May 16, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

NOTE: Those who normally receive Morning Manna by e-mail will not be receiving it until I can get my computer problem corrected. It will, however, continue to be posted here on our web site. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.

As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.–1 Peter 4:10
When you stand between the two rails of a long, straight railroad track, the two rails seem to converge in the distance–as if you are standing on the base of a long, thin triangle looking at the point. The rails don’t converge, of course, but they appear to.

For most people, life takes on the shape of a long triangle receding into the future. As infants, we stand on a broad base with a life’s worth of possibilities before us. But fast forward to life’s later years and we should be standing somewhere near the point–a life well-defined and well-spent. A child doesn’t know what he will become–doesn’t know his gifts and strengths and abilities. But hopefully, adults have allowed the sides of the triangle to gradually narrow until they have found their niche. Discovering the spiritual gifts God has given us is part of the process of discovering who we are and what we should do. Spiritual gifts are God’s way of saying, “This is who you are and what you should do.”

If you feel like you’re living in a rectangle rather than a triangle, ask God today to sharpen your focus–to make you the best possible steward of His grace revealed in your life.(From “Turning Point”)

Stewardship is what a man does after he says, “I believe.” (W. H. Greaves)

CHRIST THE KING

May 15, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Many years ago I met the late Henry M. Morris, shortly after he started he started his ministry about 1970. Although he never received all the publicity of the so-called famous preachers of his generation, his ministry (Institute for Creation Research) accomplished much more than a lot of the “hotshot” preachers put together. I thank God for the privilege of having known him. I am so thankful that, although Bro. Morris is in heaven, his work continues on through the efforts of his sons and others that he trained. He was a brilliant man, but his success came as a result of living under the Lordship of Christ. That’s the subject of this article:

“Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords.” (1 Timothy 6:15).

Of the many descriptive titles of the Lord Jesus Christ, perhaps the most significant is that of King, because this speaks of His universal dominion. The day is coming when “every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth” (Philippians 2:10).

First of all, since He created all things, He is the King of creation. “For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also. The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land” (Psalm 95:3-5).

In a special sense, of course, He is the King of the Jews. “He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end” (Luke 1:33).

He is also our King of redemption, having set us free from the kingdom of the wicked one. He “hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:13-14).

There is a day coming in which all the kings of the earth shall unite against Him. “These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful” (Revelation 17:14). “And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron. . . . And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS” (Revelation 19:15-16). Until then, let us serve Him as King, and submit to Him as Lord.
