THE “SHALL NOT’S” OF JOHN’S GOSPEL

May 9, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

There are many wonderful promises to the believer listed in the Gospel of John. Many of these promises are things which “shall” happen, but let us consider seven of these which teach of things which “shall not” happen to the believer whose trust is in Christ.

Teaching of the indwelling Holy Spirit, Christ said, “Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (4:14).

Similarly, “Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst” (6:35).

Furthermore, He taught: “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (8:12). Our deepest needs are met in Him.

Having once believed, we are placed into His family and He promises, “I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand” (10:28). In Him, we are utterly secure. Why? “He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (5:24).

Consequently, we have no fear of death. “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” (11:25-26).

As the familiar verse in our text tells us, if we only believe “that he gave his only begotten Son,” we shall “not perish, but have everlasting life.” (By John D. Morris)

NO ONE LIKE MOTHER

May 8, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

With much discomfort she carried you in her womb for nine months and with great pain she brought you into this world. She set out on a journey, down a road she never travelled before, with many questions and fears. With many sleepless nights and much hard work she attended to your needs. In weariness and with great sacrifice she determined to make life easier for you than it was for her.
She walked the floor with you when you were sick, wiped your feverish brow with a cool wet cloth to comfort you, and held you close when you were frightened. She warned you of dangers, counselled you with words of wisdom, wiped away your tears, and kissed your cheek. She made you brush your teeth, took you to the doctor, helped you with your homework, prepared your meals, washed your clothes, and did numerous other things without any fan-fare, praise, or reward. She was over-worked, under-paid, grossly neglected, and seldom appreciated, but she never complained about it.
She hasn’t been perfect, although it seemed so, but she was always there for you–even when everyone else turned away. She might have seemed frail, but she wasn’t weak. She did whatever needed to be done to make you the person you are. She was bold enough to tell you the truth– even when you didn’t want to hear it; courageous enough to put her foot down and stop you from doing what you shouldn’t; brave enough to confront the neighborhood bully and anybody else who threatened her “baby”. She was wise enough to challenge you to always do your best and to believe that you could do anything you set your mind to do. She was patient when you came short and urged you to try again. And she was always willing to forgive you when you failed, even if it was for the tenth time! Chances are, your mother has been your wisest teacher, your finest example, your greatest provider, your strongest supporter, and your best friend. It’s like an old poem that begins with these words–
“There’s no other love like a sweet Mother’s love;
An affection like hers there’s no other.
Our friends and companions all love us we know,
But no one else loves us as Mother.”
Then, after several verses, the poem ends with this wise advice-
“Then while she is with us let’s brighten her days;
Let’s show her how dearly we love her.
For in all of the walks of life’s many ways,
No one else loves us as Mother.”
That’s true, and no one on earth is more deserving of our love and respect than a godly mother. On this special day, and every day, tell her you love her and prove it by meeting the needs in her life. She has always been there for you, so don’t fail to express your appreciation and affection for her. Remember the words of Lincoln, “No man is poor who has had a godly mother.” I have eight very rich children! I pray that they understand how wealthy they are. -David Stone

THE SERVICE OF MOTHERHOOD

May 7, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Children are a blessing from the Lord (Ps. 127:3-5). Motherhood is a great honor and privilege, yet it is also synonymous with servanthood. Every day women are called upon to selflessly meet the needs of their families. Whether they are awake at night nursing a baby, spending their time and money on less-than-grateful teenagers, or preparing meals, moms continuously put others before themselves.

Sometimes this constant serving can be exhausting and even discouraging—particularly for a first-time mother. But you can take real encouragement from Jesus. One of the best examples of gracious servanthood is found in John 13:3-16. By kneeling to wash His disciples’ feet, the Lord showed that the key to true leadership is humility. And it is humility that leads to eternal reward.

Unless you are willing to stoop down and get your hands dirty, you will miss the real riches of motherhood. By dying to your own desires and pouring your life into someone else, you become like Christ and create a godly legacy that will carry on for generations to come. What greater blessing could one hope for? Of course, the motivation for serving others is not to reap benefits, but when we follow God’s plan for our life, that’s what happens.

In giving us children, God places us in a position of both leadership and service. He calls us to give up our lives for someone else’s sake—to abandon our own desires and put our child’s interests first. Yet, according to His perfect design, it is through this selflessness that we can become truly fulfilled. –By Dr. Charles Stanley

GOD’S TIMING

May 6, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

There are many great lessons to be learned from events recorded in the Old Testament –that’s what God intended (Romans 15:4). This is especially true of Israel’s history and Moses’ ministry. A good example of this is found in Exodus 2:11-15, where Moses took matters into his own hand and tried to correct an injustice. Charles Swindoll does an excellant job of describing his mistake and our message:

I’m convinced Moses was doing more than grandstanding. I believe he was absolutely sincere. He didn’t see himself murdering a cruel slave driver as much as courageously striking a blow for God’s people. The desire to do something right overcame him. His problem? He dedicated himself to the will of God, but not to the God whose will it was.

Let that thought sink in. You and I can become so dedicated to the will of God, we can be so driven by a blind sense of purpose, that we might inadvertently take matters into our own hands and leave God completely out of the loop. Been there, done that?

Did that cruel taskmaster need to be punished? Yes. Was it wrong to beat that Hebrew as he did? Certainly. But when Moses stepped in and began his own Operation Deliverance, he was energized by the flesh, not the Spirit.

How easily this can happen to good people, to men and women with the highest motives and the best of intentions. Picture this: You’re a gifted and highly qualified teacher. In your heart, you ache to be in front of a classroom again. With all your soul, you want to feel that lectern beneath your hands and the minds of those eager students absorbing your knowledge. And suddenly, seemingly out of the blue, an opportunity presents itself. If you don’t watch it, my friend, you’ll find yourself elbowing your way through that “open door.”

But all the while, God waits for you to seek His counsel. If you act without discerning His timing, you may lose the smile of divine favor. He will not bless what He has not ordained. You may truly sense that God has something for you to accomplish in a certain area. But if you aren’t vigilant, if you aren’t daily humbling yourself before Him, seeking His face, discerning His timing, operating under the Spirit’s control, you may push and force your way prematurely into that place where God wanted you, but you will not have arrived in His own time.

WHAT’S IN YOU?

May 5, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

“Don’t go off half-cocked!”. As a child I heard those words over and over again. Mom and dad knew I had a terrible temper and that was their way of warning me. I find many occasions today when I still need that advice.
When things go wrong, most of us tend to over-react and act out of character. We end up doing things we later regret. That’s why it is imperative that we bring our mind under the control of the Holy Spirit. What we think determines how we behave. Here’s a good example taken from the daily devotional “Our Daily Bread”:

While giving a sermon, missionary Hudson Taylor filled a glass with water and placed it on a table in front of him. As he was speaking, he pounded his fist hard enough to make the water splash onto the table. He then explained, “You will come up against much trouble. But when you do, remember, only what’s in you will spill out.”

That’s worth thinking about, isn’t it? When we are mistreated or misunderstood, how do we respond? With loving words, patience, and kindness? Or are we inclined to retaliate in anger?

In Ephesians 4:25-32, we see the contrast between what a person is before he is saved and what he is afterward. When we live under the control of the Holy Spirit, we will show it by the way we react to the jolting trials and temptations of life. How we respond to trying, embarrassing situations that are suddenly thrust upon us is a good test of how much we have grown in grace.

It is possible to suppress frustration and anger, and to appear undisturbed to people around us. But if our heart is full of the Savior’s love, we will respond to the jostling of an unexpected trial with genuine patience and kindness. Like a full glass of water, what’s inside of us will spill over on the outside.

Lord, help me flee all sin and shame,
Lest I disgrace Your holy name;
And may I live so others see
The Savior’s love revealed in me. —D. De Haan   When trouble grows, your character shows
