CHRISTIAN CHARACTER

April 14, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

We ought to seek to gather in this world–treasure that we can carry with us through death’s gates, and into the eternal world. We should strive to build into our lives–qualities that shall endure. Men slave and work to get a little money, or to obtain honor, or power, or to win an earthly crown–but when they pass into the great vast forever, they take nothing of all this with them!

Yet there are things–virtues, fruits of character, graces–which men do carry with them out of this world. What a man IS–he carries with him into the eternal world. Money and rank and pleasures and earthly gains–he leaves behind him; but his character, he takes with him into eternity!

This suggests at once, the importance of character and character-building.

Character is not what a man professes to be–but what he really IS, as God sees him.

A man may not be as good as his reputation. A good reputation may hide an evil heart and life. Reputation is not character. Reputation is what a man’s neighbors and friends think of him; character is what the man IS.

Christ’s character is the model, the ideal, for every Christian life. We are to be altogether like Him; therefore all of life’s aiming and striving should be towards Christ’s blessed beauty. His image we find in the Gospels. We can look at it every day. We can study it in its details, as we follow our Lord in His life among men, in all the variations of experience through which He passed.

A little Christian girl was asked the question, “What is it for you to be a Christian?”

She answered, “It is to do as Jesus would do, and behave as He would behave–if He were a little girl and lived at our house.”

No better answer could have been given. And there is scarcely any experience of life–for which we cannot find something in Christ’s life to instruct us. We can find the traits and qualities of His life, as they shine out in His contact . . .
with temptation,
with enmity,
with wrong,
with pain,
with sorrow.

The next thing, when we have the vision of Christ before us, is to get it implanted into our own life. We cannot merely dream ourselves into godly manhood or womanhood; we must forge for ourselves, with sweat and anguish, the beautiful visions of Christ-likeness which we find on the Gospel pages! It will cost us self-discipline, oftentimes anguish, as we must deny ourselves, and cut off the things we love. SELF must be crucified.

It is not easy to become a godly man, a Christlike man.(By J. R. Miller)

MERCY AMID MISERY

April 13, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.–Lamentations 3:22-23

Have you ever been so overwhelmed by sorrow that you couldn’t speak or move? If you have experienced this kind of sorrow, then you can understand firsthand the emotions of Jeremiah as he wrote the book of Lamentations. This book is a sobbing funeral song for the death of Jerusalem and the captivity of her people because of their sins. Each word in this book seems to be penned by someone with no hope. It is almost as if you could visualize the tears of Jeremiah falling onto every page.

Even though this book may seem to be full of destruction and desolation, there is a passage that may be familiar to you. It is the one ounce of hope that fills this barrelful of sadness.”It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness”– What a message of hope and renewal!

We often forget the glimmer of light and hope found in these words amidst this seemingly dark book of sorrow in the Bible. Jeremiah’s soul was aching, but he knew the Lord could cure it all. There may be times when you want to sink into despair. But even in the deepest pit of sorrow, there is One who will reach in and rescue you. Then you will be able to repeat the same words Jeremiah used: “The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him” (Lamentations 3:24)—

If you are experiencing sorrow, ask the Lord to rescue you from the pain and sorrow. If you know someone who is going through this battle, pray for God’s peace on their lives and point them to the ray of hope found in Lamentations. (From “Senior Living”. Scripture references changed to the KJV).

Notice the words “every morning”–whatever you are forced to face today, God is faithful–He never fails! Amid your misery He is merciful. You can be helped by placing your hope in Him!

WEEP NO MORE

April 12, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

The voice of weeping shall be no more heard.
Isaiah 65:19

The glorified weep no more, for all outward
causes of grief are gone. There are no broken
friendships, nor blighted prospects in heaven.

Poverty, famine, peril, persecution,
and slander, are unknown there.
No pain distresses, no thought of
death or bereavement saddens.

They weep no more, for they are perfectly
sanctified. No “evil heart of unbelief” prompts
them to depart from the living God; they are
without fault before his throne, and are fully
conformed to his image.

Well may they cease to mourn
who have ceased to sin.

They weep no more, because all fear of change
is past. They know that they are eternally secure.

Sin is shut out, and they are shut in!

They dwell within a city which shall never be stormed.
They bask in a sun which shall never set.
They drink of a river which shall never dry.
They pluck fruit from a tree which shall never wither.

Countless cycles may revolve, but eternity shall
not be exhausted, and while eternity endures,
their immortality and blessedness shall co-exist with it.
They are forever with the Lord!

They weep no more, because every desire
is fulfilled. They cannot wish for anything
which they have not in possession.

Eye and ear, heart and hand, judgment, imagination,
hope, desire, will- all the faculties are completely
satisfied. And imperfect as our present ideas are
of the things which God has prepared for those that
love him, yet we know enough, by the revelation of
the Spirit, that the saints above are supremely blessed.

The joy of Christ, which is an infinite fulness of delight,
is in them. They bathe themselves in the bottomless,
shoreless sea of infinite happiness!

That same joyful rest remains for us.
It may not be far distant.

Before long the weeping-willow shall be exchanged
for the palm-branch of victory, and sorrow’s dewdrops
will be transformed into the pearls of everlasting bliss!

STRENGTH IN WEAKNESS

April 11, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

—when I am weak, then am I strong. –2 Corinthians 12:10
There is a blessing in weakness–because it nourishes dependence on God. When we are strong, or deem ourselves strong–we are really weak, since then we trust in ourselves, and do not seek Divine help. But when we are consciously weak, knowing ourselves unequal to our duties and struggles–we are strong, because then we turn to Christ, and get His strength.

Too many people think that their weakness a barrier to their usefulness; or make it an excuse for doing little with their life. Instead of this, however, if we give it to Christ–He will transform our weakness into strength. He says that His power is made perfect in weakness; that is, what is lacking in human strength–He fills and makes up with divine strength. Paul had learned this, when he said that he now gloried in his weaknesses, because on account of them–the strength of Christ rested upon him, so that, when he was weak–then he was strong–strong with Divine strength.

We need only to make sure of one thing–that we do indeed bring our weakness to Christ, and lean on Him in simple faith. This is the vital link in getting the blessing. Weakness itself is a burden; it is like chains upon our limbs. If we try to carry it alone–we shall only fail. But if we lay it on the strong Son of God–and let Him carry us and our burden, going on quietly and firmly in the way of duty–He will make our very weakness–a secret source of strength. He will not take the weakness from us–that is not His promise–but He will so fill it with His own power–that we shall be strong, more than conquerors, able to do all things through Christ, who strengthens us!

This is the blessed secret of having our burdening weakness, transformed into strength. The secret can be found only in Christ. And in Him–it can be found by every humble, trusting disciple. (J. R. Miller, 1894)

THE NAIL

April 10, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

“Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.” — Matthew 22:36-38

A certain man lived in Haiti and wanted to sell his house for $2,000. Another man wanted very badly to buy it, but because he was poor, he could not afford the full price. After much bargaining, the owner agreed to sell the house for half the original price with just one stipulation: He would retain ownership of one small nail protruding from just over the door.

After several years, the original owner wanted the house back, but the new owner was unwilling to sell. So the first owner went out, found the carcass of a dead dog, and hung it from the single nail he still owned. Soon the house became unlivable, and the family was forced to sell the house to the owner of the nail.

What was wrong with letting the owner retain one small nail? What could one nail do? Even if he claimed it and wanted to remove it, it would not damage the integrity of the house. I am sure the business proposition did not seem a big deal to the buyer. What would a little nail hurt?

In the end, the nail was the item that determined the owner of the house. While the buyer hadn’t seen the big deal in letting the previous owner retain ownership of a nail, the previous owner used that nail to take over the entire house.

That story can be applied to our lives as Christians. Our “house” (our life) was once owned by the devil. The minute we were born, we became guilty and were condemned to an eternity without Christ. But Christ purchased our house, or our life, when He died on Calvary to pay for our sins. The minute we trusted Him to be our Saviour, we gave our lives to Him.

Many times, we can forget a nail. Maybe it is a thought process, an unhealthy hobby, a style of music, or something that draws us away from God. It may seem like no big deal to let the devil retain ownership of some small thing, but it could end up allowing him to retain ownership of the whole house. While we can never lose our salvation and the devil can never “own” us again, he can gain control of our lives through one little nail.

Our verses today tell us that we are to give our whole heart, soul, and mind to God. He wants every part of us. Not committing all means not committing at all. Even what seems like the smallest of things in your life is all the devil needs to cause you to fall back into sin.

What is that nail in your life? On what area of your life does the devil have a grasp? Do not give him even an inch of leeway in your life! He will try to convince you that it will not affect you, but stronger Christians than you and I have fallen because they were not fully committed to God. Commit wholly to God today and let Him hold the deed to your life. (By Dr. Paul Chappell)
