A SUPER SURPRISE

April 24, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.–Luke 24:36
The greatest event ever had already happened that  morning, but they did not know it. On the very day that Jesus rose from the grave, the eleven apostles  met together, discussing the strange events of the past week. They feel alone, confused and fearful–what are they to do?
They had heard the testimony of the women concerning the Lord’s resurrection, but they did not believe it. Peter and John had visited the tomb and found it empty, but they did not see Him. Now the eleven are listening to the report of two men who claimed they had seen Jesus, talked with Him, and even eaten with Him! Can you imagine what all is going through their mind at this moment?
Then suddenly, “Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you”. What a surprise. A super surprise!
It was this revelation that changed everything. Being assured of the Lord’s resurrection, they were transformed by the truth of it. Their depression gave way to delight. Their cowardice changed to courage. His presence provided peace. And I believe it will do the same for us.
When we assemble together do we do so realizing that He is in our midst (Matt. 18:20)? As we go about our daily routine are we convinced that He is with us “alway, even unto the end of the world.”(Matt. 28:20)? Do you really truly believe His promise,”I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”(Heb. 13:5)?

Some scholars were discussing the great authors of the past. One asked, “What if Milton should suddenly enter the room?” “Ah!” replied another. “We would honor him and compensate him for the little recognition he received in his day.” A third man commented, “What if Shakespeare entered? Would we not all stand and proclaim him King of the Poets?” Then someone ventured, “And if Jesus Christ should enter?” There was a long silence, until finally one said: “But gentlemen, He is here!”

Dear friends, I remind you, He is here. He knows, He cares, and He can help! –HDS

Although we cannot see our Lord,
We know that He is here;
His promise is dependable:
He always will be near

THE EMPTY TOMB

April 23, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Long lines of visitors from all over the world wait patiently day after day to visit Lenin’s Tomb and view his embalmed body. Although he died in 1924, the corpse of that Communist leader has seemingly suffered no decomposition. It looks deceptively lifelike. And its appearance is indeed deceptive. Skillful artists monitor the preserved corpse, artificially coloring its face and using wax to fill in any lines or the smallest spot of decay.

People also regularly visit Jerusalem to see the place where Jesus died and was buried. But there’s a striking contrast—there is no body of the crucified Christ anywhere. Oh, there is one rock-hewn tomb, where according to tradition the nail-scarred, spear-driven, thorn-crowned corpse of Christ was laid. But resurrected by the power of God His Father, the Savior left His graveclothes behind when He emerged from the tomb, like a butterfly abandoning its cocoon.

Jesus is alive and you can know His presence today. Because of His atoning death and the empty tomb, you can have eternal life (1 Cor. 15:20-22). You need only to admit that you are a sinner and want His salvation. He’ll give you new life now, and one day you’ll see Him and be with Him forever (1 Peter 1:3-5).  — Vernon C. Grounds

Grave, where is thy victory now?
See the light upon His brow!
Empty—see, the stony bed;
Christ is risen from the dead!  —Chisholm

Christ’s empty tomb guarantees our full salvation. (From Our Daily Bread)

HANDLING INJUSTICES

April 22, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” —Ephesians 4:31-32

“But that’s not fair!” Has your child ever said this to you? Have you ever heard someone who experienced an injustice lash out in anger? Perhaps like me, you’ve seen people who were doing what was right, loving and serving the Lord, and living for Him, suddenly come down with an illness, disease, or loss. Perhaps that person has even been you. If so, I want to challenge you to open your heart to what God has to say through Ephesians 4 today. Put aside the injustice or undeserved circumstances in your life, and allow God to speak to you through His truth.

We could read verse 31 several times a year (maybe even hundreds of times!), but often it’s not until a trial or time of injustice comes that God’s words mean the most. God tells us that no matter what comes in our lives whether it be bitterness or anger, we are to put it aside. He doesn’t tell us to seek revenge then put it aside. He doesn’t justify us holding on to our bitterness. God commands us to put aside all hurt or anger that we may feel.

Sadly, many Christians become bitter or angry with God when injustices occur. They don’t understand why they are suffering while others who aren’t living for God seem to be living happy lives. The Psalmist addressed this when he wrote, “Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity” (Psalm 37:1). God encourages us, “Don’t worry about what is happening to others. I have a special plan for your life, so trust My path to bring you to that plan.”

But God doesn’t want us to just put aside our hurts; He wants us to show kindness. When we are wronged by others and have put aside our anger, God wants us to also show kindness to them. God goes on in verse 32 to say, “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” While it is hard enough to let go of hurt feelings, showing kindness takes special grace from God.

Our kindness and forgiveness to others is not based on our feelings but on Christ’s action on the Cross. His entire earthly ministry was about forgiveness—coming to earth to die and pay the price for our sins, thus forgiving us of any wrongdoing. We should forgive others and show them kindness because God has first forgiven us.

What injustice have you experienced? Has someone wronged you or has an “unfair” situation come into your life? Rather than harboring bitterness and anger, put aside those feelings and focus on showing kindness. If you’re having trouble seeing how God is working in your situation, take time right now to read Psalm 37. Let God’s words encourage you to surrender to His path for your life, even if that includes suffering injustices.(Dr. Paul Chappell)

ALL THE SINS OF THE SAINTS

April 21, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

And we know that all things work together for good, to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28

All the afflictions, and
all the temptations, and
all the desertions, and
all the oppressions, and
all the oppositions, and
all the persecutions
which befall a godly man–shall work for his good.

Every cross, and
every loss, and
every disease–
which befall the holy man–shall work for his good.

Every device,
every snare,
every deceit,
every stratagem,
and every enterprise of Satan against the holy man–shall work for his good.

They shall all help to make him . . .
more humble,
more holy,
more heavenly,
more spiritual,
more faithful,
more fruitful,
more watchful.

Every prosperity–and every adversity,
every storm–and every calm,
every bitter–and every sweet,
every cross–and every comfort,
shall work for the holy man’s good.

When God gives a mercy–that shall work for his good.

When God takes away a mercy–that shall work for his good.

Yes, even all the falls and all the sins of the saints shall work for their good. Oh . . .
the care,
the fear,
the watchfulness,
the tenderness,
the zeal–
which God raises in the souls of His saints by their very falls! Oh the hatred, the indignation, and the detestation–which God raises in the hearts of His children against sin–by their very falling into sin!

Oh what love to Christ,
what thankfulness for Christ,
what admiration of Christ,
what cleaving to Christ,
what exalting of Christ,
what drawings from Christ’s grace–
are saints led to, by their very falls!

It is the glory of God’s holiness, that . . .
He can turn spiritual diseases–into holy remedies!
He can turn soul poisons–into heavenly cordials!
He can prevent sin by sin, and cure falling by falling!

O Christian!
What though friends and relations frown upon you,
what though enemies are plotting and conspiring against you,
what though needs, like armed men, are breaking in upon you,
what though men rage, and devils roar against you,
what though sickness is devastating your family,
what though death stands every day at your elbow–
yet there is no reason for you to fear nor faint, because all these things shall work for your good! Yes, there is wonderful cause of joy and rejoicing, in all the afflictions and tribulations which come upon you–considering that they shall all work for your good.

O Christians! I am afraid, I am afraid–that you do not run so often as you should–to the breasts of this promise, nor draw that sweetness and comfort from it, that it would yield, and that your several cases may require: “We know that all things work together for good, to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.” I have been the longer upon this verse, because the condition of God’s people calls for the strongest cordials, and the choicest and the sweetest comforts. (This was written by James Smith about 150 years ago, but it is still true.)

It is better to trust God than to try to understand Him–ask Job!

NEVER FORGOTTEN

April 20, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

I can empathize with the man who said, “I write down everything I want to remember. That way, instead of spending a lot of time trying to remember what it is I wrote down, I spend the time looking for the paper I wrote it on.” Most of us are able to forget much better than we remember.

Yet God assures us that He will never forget us. Not for a second are we ever out of His thoughts. In fact, Isaiah tells us that we are inscribed on the very palms of His hands?the part of our body we use to reach out and demonstrate our love and concern through the ministry of touch. And the palms are the most tender part of those hands. So it is with compassionate and tender love that God has engraved us on His divine palms.

Sometimes in the midst of our troubles it may seem as if God has overlooked us. We pray and God doesn’t seem to hear us. We read our Bibles, but the verses all seem lifeless and meaningless. We look for solutions, but God provides no answers.

Despite your circumstances, remember where your name is engraved. Be assured that God has not forgotten you. The forgetfulness that is so common with humans can never afflict Him. Jesus’ nail-pierced palms are vivid reminders of — His unending love. Give God time to accomplish His purpose in your life. Have confidence that your situation is only temporary. Stand firm on God’s promise, “Yet will I not forget you.” You’re in good hands with God.

God always oversees; He never overlooks—Woodrow Kroll
