STUDENT OR SERVANT?

July 16, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.–James 1:22

It is good to read and study the Bible, but more is needed. Think about that as you read this story from” Wisdom For The Heart”.

The president of his own company employing several hundred workers was preparing for an extended business trip. Before leaving he sat down and wrote a lengthy letter,  detailing projects he wanted accomplished in his absence, clients he wanted contacted, and the tasks he expected his employees to do while he was away. He finished it, put it in the company post office box, rode to the airport, and boarded his plane.

On his return several months later, he immediately noticed the grounds were unkempt: the grass obviously had not been cut in weeks, the lawn was littered, the shrubs and trees needed trimming, and the doors were marked with handprints. He parked his car and hurried inside. Employees were lounging in their chairs, drinking coffee and talking, feet propped on desks, and most weren’t dressed in office attire. A ping-pong table had been set up, and an array of video games littered the flat surfaces.  His arrival went unnoticed.

Angrily, the CEO called a meeting of the entire management staff. When all had assembled, he began his tirade: “I can’t believe what I’m seeing!  Everything is completely different from what I expected it would be.  What’s been going here?  Didn’t you get my letter?” Their faces brightened, and someone replied, “Yes sir, we did. We love that letter. We read it almost every day.”  “In fact,” said one man, “I’ve even memorized several paragraphs from your letter.” “It’s terrific reading,” others  chimed in.  Another spoke, saying, “Sir, we’ve organized some study groups. We gather at least once a week and re-read portions of your letter to make sure we understand it all.”

Dumbfounded, the president asked, “But did you finish the projects? Did you call the clients? Did you do the things I asked you to do?” At that, everyone looked down.  One man finally spoke on behalf of the group, saying, “No sir . . . you see, we’re still studying your letter.”

Our problem is not in our failure to understand certain biblical truths, but to live the truths we understand. We have all been entrusted with a letter from God—an inspired letter from our great King. Are you content to merely read it, study it, and perhaps memorize it?  When are you going to put it into practice?

It is one thing for believers to say, “We believe the Bible!” It is quite another to behave as though we believe. May our belief and our behavior be one and the same—for the glory of God.  Then, indeed, there will be no shame . . .  should He return today!

Search your heart before God right now. Ask Him to open your eyes to the ways in which you have not been obedient to His Word, and confess those shortcomings to Him. Then pray for the power to change those habits, and strength to flee from those besetting sins.

TRUSTING GOD IN DIFFICULT TIMES

July 15, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.–Psalm 16:10

Turning Point magazine gives us some words of cheer based on this wonderful OT prophecy:

Every Christian has to trust the Lord for the unknown at some point: the outcome of an illness, the future of a relationship, the resolution of a crisis, the welfare of one’s children. Some are even called to trust God in an ultimate sense–when death is a possibility. Jesus himself came face-to-face with the grim specter of death in the Garden of Gethsemane. He no doubt remembered a messianic promise from the Psalms by which God’s Holy One would not remain dead forever. That is, resurrection was Jesus’ hope! And God was faithful to keep that promise for His Son.

You may never face the prospect of an untimely death, but Scripture gives you a similar promise: “Death is swallowed up in victory” (1 Corinthians 15:54). And if God has promised to be faithful in that darkest of human hours, how much more can you trust him with daily needs. Because God was faithful and Jesus was resurrected, we know those who believe in Him will be as well (verses 23, 57).

Therefore, imitating Jesus’ response to God’s promise, “Be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, for as much as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord” (verse 58).

We are more sure to arise out of our graves than out of our beds.–Thomas Watson

THE FORESHADOWED CROSS

July 14, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

What does the symbol of the Cross mean to you? To many people, the Cross is merely an archaic emblem. To others, the Cross invokes feelings of guilt or confusion. Some churches even see it as a hindrance to attracting nonbelievers.

Yet the early believers chose the Cross as their symbol for a special reason. There were many symbols of Jesus’ earthly ministry to represent them. They could have chosen a manger to represent where baby Jesus was born. They could have chosen a boat, from which Jesus taught the crowd in Galilee. They could have chosen an apron, which Jesus wore when He washed the disciples’ feet. They could have chosen a throne or a crown, to represent His divine and sovereign rule.

But instead they chose the Cross that proclaims that the wages of sin are fully paid, and that the perfect sacrifice has been fully offered. Through the Cross we have redemption and life with Christ in heaven. Through the Cross we know that sin has been defeated.

The symbol of the cross did not first appear at the death of Jesus. As early as the book of Genesis, we begin to see the foreshadowing of the cross. From the moment Adam and Eve decided to go their own way from God’s commandments, God began lifting up the Cross. We see it when the blood of an innocent lamb was shed to atone for Adam and Eve’s disobedience. We see the symbol of the Cross when God’s people participated in Passover.

But these animal sacrifices of the Old Testament could never take away sin permanently. Only the pure blood of the Lamb of God can truly purge sin. The animal sacrifices reminded God’s people that sin is a costly offense to a Holy God. And these sacrifices pointed forward to the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross.

Many people are drawn to the magnanimous love of God, but they hesitate to acknowledge the righteousness and holiness of God. Righteousness demands that sin be punished. For God’s justice to prevail, sin and rebellion against God must be dealt with. Since the only covering for sin is the shedding of innocent blood, God shed His own blood–the most innocent blood of all.

Because God shed His own blood, we can find forgiveness of sins, relief from guilt, peace with God and eternal life in heaven.

The entire plan of God, from Genesis to Revelation, is built on the Cross. When that first innocent lamb’s blood was shed for Adam and Eve, they understood the enormity of their disobedience. They understood that God’s justice must be met.

How do you view the Cross? How do you allow the Cross to impact your life, to motivate you, to inspire you? How often do you thank God for the Cross? Stop and thank God right now for His ultimate sacrifice on the Cross. (By Michael Youssef)

INSPIRED BY THE INVISIBLE

July 13, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.–2 Cor. 4:18

The first twenty years of my ministry I spent a lot of time away from home preaching revival meetings, etc. In doing so I often found myself in unpleasant situations. The thing that kept me going was knowing my stay there would be short and I would return home after the meeting was over. At home I could feel the embrace of my wife, hear the laughter of my children, eat home-cooked meals, and sleep in my own bed. Indeed–“there’s no place like home”. That inspired me and kept me going through the days while I was away.

Knowing something good lies ahead helps us get through the difficulties we encounter enroute. That’s why I keep saying,”For the Christian, the best is always yet to come”. I believe that. And knowing it is so helps me. The anticipation of something delightful can be a great encouragement when you are facing unpleasant situations. If you only focus on your present problems it will drive you to despair. But when we know that we only have to endure for a brief time it makes matters a lot easier. For that reason we ought to think much and more about heaven. The hope of heaven can help you like nothing else that I know of. The reality of it brings great relief to God’s weary children.

Regardless of what you’re going through, if you know the Lord, things will get better, much better, they will in fact be perfect! It’s just a matter of time. If Christ is your Savior then God is your Father, heaven is your home, and the Holy Spirit is your Helper until you get there. Don’t let the hardness of the way cloud your vision and rob you of your joy. Soon your journey will end and you will be home at last. There everything will be absolute perfection. So, keep your eyes on the prize!

DELAYED FOR A REASON

July 12, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt.
Exodus 13:17

A quick glance at a map of the Mediterranean world shows the proximity of Egypt to the Promised Land. It should have taken only a few days for Moses and the Israelites to walk around the southeast corner of the Mediterranean Sea to Canaan. But Moses led the people into the Sinai desert so they would not encounter the warlike Philistines and flee back to slavery in Egypt. The Israelites complained, not knowing that being alive at the hand of Moses was better than being dead at the hand of the Philistines.

How many times do we complain about life’s circumstances without knowing what’s going on behind the scenes? God’s hand of mercy and grace is at work, protecting us and guiding our steps more times than we are aware. Our response ought to be, “Lord, thank you for this delay” instead of, “Lord, why are you allowing me to be inconvenienced?”

Make it a habit to thank God for His providential protection–the shield of His faithfulness that surrounds you moment-by-moment.(Turning Point)

God has His hours and His delays.
