THINK ABOUT IT          4-18-23

April 18, 2023 By Pastor David Stone

THINK ABOUT IT            4-18-23

FISHERMEN?

Although we know that as Christians we ought to be fishers of men, we don’t always do as we should. The following, by an unknown author, illustrates how churches often fail.

The story is told about a group called themselves fishermen. There were many fish in the water all around this group. In fact, the whole area was surrounded by streams and lakes filled with fish. And the fish were hungry.

Week after week, month after month, and year after year, these who called themselves fishermen met in meetings and talked about their call to fish, the abundance of fish, and how they might go about fishing. Year after year they carefully defined what fishing means, defended fishing as an occupation, and declared that fishing is always to be a primary task of fishermen.

Continually, they searched for new and better methods of fishing and for new and better definitions of fishing. Further they said, “The fishing industry exists by fishing as fire exists by burning.” They loved slogans such as “Fishing Is the Task of Every Fisherman.” They sponsored special meetings called “Fishermen’s Campaigns” and “The Month for Fishermen to Fish.” They sponsored costly nationwide and world-wide congresses to discuss fishing and to promote fishing and hear about all the ways of fishing such as the new fishing equipment, fish calls, and whether any new bait had been discovered.

These fishermen built large, beautiful buildings called “Fishing Headquarters.” The plea was that everyone should be a fisherman and every fisherman should fish. There was one thing they didn’t do, however—they didn’t fish.

In addition to meeting regularly, they organized a board to send out fishermen to other places where there were many fish. The board hired staff and appointed committees and held many meetings to define fishing, to defend fishing, and to decide what new streams should be thought about. But the staff and committee members did not fish.

Large, elaborate, and expensive training centers were built to teach fishermen how to fish. Over the years courses were offered on the needs of fish, the nature of fish, where to find fish, the psychological reactions of fish, and how to approach and feed fish. Those who taught had doctorates in fishology, but the teachers did not fish. They only taught fishing. Year after year, after tedious training, many were graduated and were given fishing licenses. They were sent to do full-time fishing, some to distant waters which were filled with fish.

Many who felt the call to be fishermen responded. They were commissioned and sent to fish. But like the fishermen back home, they never fished. Like the fishermen back home, they engaged in all kinds of other occupations. They built power plants to pump water for fish and tractors to plow new waterways. They made all kinds of equipment to travel here and there to look at fish hatcheries. Some also said that they wanted to be part of the fishing party, but they felt called to furnish fishing equipment. Others felt their job was to relate to the fish in a good way so the fish would know the difference between good and bad fishermen. Others felt that simply letting the fish know they were nice, land-loving neighbors and how loving and kind they were was enough.

After one stirring meeting on the necessity of fishing, one young fellow left the meeting and went fishing. The next day he reported that he had caught two outstanding fish. He was honored for his excellent catch and scheduled to visit all the big meetings possible to tell how he did it. So he quit fishing in order to have time to tell the other fishermen about his experience. He was also placed on the Fishermen’s General Board as a person having considerable experience.

Now it’s true that many of the fishermen sacrificed and put up with all kinds of difficulties. Some lived near the water and bore the smell of dead fish every day. They received the ridicule of some who made fun of their fishermen’s clubs and the fact that they claimed to be fishermen yet never fished. They wondered about those who felt it was of little use to attend the weekly meetings to talk about fishing. Imagine how hurt some were when one day a person suggested that those who don’t go fishing are not really fishermen, no matter how much they claimed to be. Yet it did sound correct. Is a person a fisherman if, year after year, he never goes fishing? Think about it!

MOTIVATION TO KEEP GOING

“ For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.“- Phil. 1:23-24

D.L. Moody told the following story: I heard once of a man who dreamed that he was swept into Heaven, and oh, he was so delighted to think that he had at last got there. All at once one came and said: “Come, I want to show you something.” He took him to the battlements, and he said, “Look down yonder; what do you see?”

“I see a very dark world.”

“Look and see if you know it.”

“Why, yes,” he said, “that is the world I have come from.”

“What do you see?”

“Men are blindfolded there; many of them are going over a precipice.”

“Well, will you stay here and enjoy Heaven, or will you go back to earth and spend a little longer time, and tell those men about this world?”

He was a Christian worker who had been discouraged. He awoke from his sleep and later he said: “I have never wished myself dead since.”

The next time you get discouraged by the difficulties of life to the point that you want to bail out on God and wish you were dead you might want to think about the point of this story. There are things more important than your comfort. Lost souls are headed for hell and you are on earth for a reason. The fact that you are living means God has a purpose for you! – HDS

THE SLEEPLESS WATCHER

“He that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper.”– Psa.121:3-5

I have read this verse at grave sides of over 100 times, hoping the people would get the message. In the following F. B. Meyer explains:

“This PSALM has been called the Traveller’s Psalm. When the pilgrims started forth from their distant homes to go up to the Temple, not one of them could forecast his experiences before he reached home again. There were perils of rivers, perils of robbers, perils in the wilderness, perils in travel from wild beasts. It was well, therefore, that they should commit themselves and their dear ones to the care of One who neither slumbered nor slept. It is not enough for the body to be kept; we need the soul to be kept from all evil, as we go out into the world with its microbes of temptation, or come back to the luxury and comfort of our dwelling. There is temptation everywhere; not for one moment are we absolutely immune.

There is a difference between slumbering and sleeping. The mother or nurse watching the child may sometimes get a few moments of slumber; it is not very restful, yet there is a brief pause of unconsciousness. But this never comes to God. Not for one moment does He slumber, or ceases His watchful care of us. God keeps us by besetting us behind and before, and lays His hand upon us (Psa.139:5). As a sentry goes to and fro before the palace given to his charge, so God’s peace, like a sentinel, keeps watch and ward around the soul. We speak of the castle-keeper, the inner circle of defence; so God’s Presence is our Keep. We think also of the safe, around which the fire may play, but cannot touch its contents; so the child of God may walk in the midst of peril and temptation, but God is round about him; he is inside the secret place of the Most High, and no weapons formed against him can reach that inner sanctuary. Let us hand over the keeping of our souls to Him as to a faithful Creator (1. Pet.4:19)

The closing words of this Psalm remind us of John 14:1-6. There will be one last going out and coming in, when the house of our life shall be left vacant, and we shall go forth to the Father, to the House of many mansions, to the great company which awaits us on the other side. Then in the transition between this world and the next, and amid all the mysteries that shall crowd upon us, we need fear no evil, for whatever Eternity may bring to us, we shall always be sheltered and kept by Almighty care.

Almighty God! Thou knowest that I have no power of myself to keep myself. Keep me outwardly in my body and inwardly in my soul, that I may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul. AMEN.”

It is for good reason we sing “Safe am I”. We are kept secure in the Master’s hand!- HDS

MORNING MANNA          4-15-23

April 15, 2023 By Pastor David Stone

Pastor Tom Goodman wrote: Jesus invited most people with the call, “Leave everything and follow me,” but he gave one man an even harder call.

“Go home.”

In the land of the Gerasenes, Jesus met a deeply troubled man (Mark 5:1-20).  He lived homeless among the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.  His only contact with his frightened neighbors was when they tried to restrain him with chains.  Jesus saw the Destroyer behind the man’s misery, and he performed a dramatic exorcism.  When the event drew a crowd, the Gerasenes saw their infamous resident “sitting there, dressed and in his right mind.”

As the episode comes to a close, we see the grateful Gerasene make a very understandable request:  He wanted to go with Jesus!  Wouldn’t you?  I would not have wanted to live in a community that remembered my shameful past.

But Christ gave the Gerasene a different order.  In fact, it was a different task than he typically gave others.  When Jesus invited Peter and Andrew to become his disciples, for example, he told them to leave their fishing business behind (Matthew 4).  Truth be told, not all of us would struggle with such a command to leave all that feels secure and familiar.  Some of us would be all too thrilled to run away from the people and the places that hold memories of our shameful past.

As I said, though, when the restored man asked to go with Jesus, the Savior gave him another order.  A tougher order.  He did not say, “Come away with me,” but rather, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”….

Our hardest task is not letting a pastor present us to a church excited to hear about our new faith.  Our hardest task is expressing our new faith where we live and work and go to school.  In the Gerasene’s case, he readily obeyed, and faithfully reported to his own people what Jesus had done for him.  Let’s follow his example.

PEACE IS POSSIBLE

“Let not your heart be troubled—Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you” – John 14:1, 27

Sometimes we act as though we have no control over our lives–peace doesn’t seem possible, but the little word “Let” tells us otherwise. Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled”. So, if you are truly a child of God peace is possible. The choice is yours.
Jesus didn’t say, “Keep yourself from trouble”. That would be impossible (Job 14:1). However, although we will have trouble, we don’t have to be troubled by our troubles. Maybe you are thinking, “That doesn’t seem possible”. But, who are you going to believe–yourself or the Lord? Jesus promised that peace is possible and Paul proved it is possible (Phil. 4:11). If you will just admit that it’s possible you will have come a long, long way. Most of our fear and worry is caused by a feeling of hopelessness. If you can just see that peace really is possible you will be encouraged to pursue it.

Regardless of what you are going through, and contrary to the way you might feel, peace is possible. Christ always provides what He promises! Get into the Word and find out what He says and then trust Him to do as He promised. That’s the path to peace. I’m not asking you to believe me. I’m begging you to trust Him. When you do amazing things happen.”Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusteth in thee.”(Isaiah 26:3). HDS ( 4-17-10)
