RESCUE THE PERISHING

January 9, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.”—James 5:19-20

After hearing/saying “Happy New Year” over and over again, I can’t help but think about those who are miserable. It is especially painful when it has to do with your loved ones.You want what is best for them and it grieves your heart when you see them short-changing themselves. You pray and you plead, but nothing seems to work. It is as though they are on a mission to destroy themselves and have no interest in changing. What do we do?

The fact of the matter is that some will never change regardless of what we do. Even God doesn’t force people to conform to His will. However, we must not let this cause us to give up hope and to cease all effort to reach them. That puts us in a pitiful position. Yes, it’s true that we can’t help everybody, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. Although the chance for change might be slim there is no chance at all if we don’t make an effort.

I am ashamed to say that I haven’t always given my best effort in this regards. It’s not like I haven’t made any effort. I tried and I failed, and I finally came to the conclusion that they will never change. They have spurned love, ignored counsel, resented rebuke,laughed at warnings, and responded to kindness with cruel deeds. And when that happens over and over it becomes more and more difficult to keep trying, because it seems a waste of time. You would do anything within reason to help them, but when you begin to believe that it is impossible you stop trying.

Making things sadder still is this– when we quit trying they usually start accusing. They accuse us of not loving them, not caring about their happiness, not respecting their opinions, etc. Although it isn’t true it hurts. More importantly, it also hinders. It reduces our chances of ever being able to steer them in the right direction and get them back on track. So, by the grace of God, let us never give up. Let’s keep trying even when it seems all our efforts are in vain. We ought to do what we should and leave the results to God. We might not reach everyone, but we won’t reach anyone if we don’t try. When we do our best we will reach someone and it just might be the very one we care about the most.

Please don’t give up! The last chapter hasn’t been written and as long as there is life there is a chance that it can be the happiest chapter in someone’s life. I marvel that some people never gave up on me and, even when it seemed impossible, God changed me completely. I owe it to others to never give up on them. It’s not my job to make them change, but to help them to the best of my ability, and that requires unconditional love.— HDS

WHAT CAN’T BE CURED — SHOULD BE ENDURED

January 6, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast. ” Proverbs 15:15

There is a class of little annoyances such as we make for ourselves by a complaining, or an overly fastidious temperament. There are some who make such a fuss about trifles, tormenting themselves, and worrying others by a perpetual fault-finding and discontent — as every trifling irritation is magnified to a mountain — that all pleasure is spoiled by their presence!

It is a good rule in little things, as well as great things, that “what can’t be cured — should be endured” — and endured cheerfully!

I am not advocating slovenly and careless endurance of little vexations which may be remedied — let them be set right by all means, and the more quietly as well as quickly, the better. But I have observed people who were most ludicrously discomposed by trifles which neither they nor anyone else could remedy, and which should have been overlooked with a smile, if noticed at all.

There are many overly finicky people in the world, who groan over such trifling irritations. It is really ludicrous to hear the gravity with which some people will allude to the fact of the road being dusty, even alleging that as a reason for not going a walk; others are as much afraid of a shower; others of too much sunshine; some are terrified at the idea of being over-heated.

There is no end to these idle fancies and fears! If you laugh at these miserable people — then they think you are unfeeling. If you sympathize with them — then they multiply and increase their petty annoyances!

Let us all beware of making much of little irritations. Let us learn to laugh at them, remembering how very annoying such complaints are to others, as well as bothersome to ourselves.

A cheerful person who refuses to notice trifles or be aggravated by them — soon ceases to feel them! While to those who seem to find a perverse pleasure in dwelling on, and being daunted by them — these little discomforts will actually become real cares, and will eat out half the comfort of their lives!–(Henrietta Wilson, “Little Things” 1852)

“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” Proverbs 17:22

EVER UPWARD

January 4, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“..grow….”–2 Pet. 3:18
“I’m pressing on the upward way. New heights I’m gaining every day“. Really? I hope so, but some aren’t. While just about everyone has heard that old song, many are at a standstill or going backward and downward. Rather than ascending they are descending, and that spells trouble! Every Christian should be growing continually–gaining ground every day.

I’ve often said, the best definition of backsliding is when a person ceases to “grow in grace, and the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Pet. 3:18). You might know more, do more, give more, and be better than anyone else in the church, but when you stop growing you are backsliden—regardless of how well you stack up against others. Man is not the model for your life. Christ is our example and we should always be increasing in His likeness. None of us ever reach a place where it is okay to plateau. Since none of us measure up to the stature of Christ there is always room for all of us to grow.

We could spend hours talking about the cause and consequences of backsliding, but for now I just want you to focus on whether you are or are not growing in the Lord. If the answer is “no” please realize that there are no excuses. If your growth has stopped, rather than give up, you need to get up, get going and get growing. Growth affects every area of your life– your joy, peace, ability to love, strength to resist temptation, power to endure trials, and effectiveness to minister to others. We neglect it to our own peril. While God alone can enable us to grow it isn’t automatic. We must make use of the means God has given for it to happen. Because Christ gives us spiritual life we have the potential to grow, but to make it possible we must feed upon His Word, pray, and obey His precepts. So, let’s get growing!–HDS

LED BY THE LORD

January 3, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“..I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure..” (Genesis 33:14).

What a beautiful picture of Jacob’s thoughtfulness for the cattle and the children! He would not allow them to be overdriven even for one day. He would not lead on according to what a strong man like Esau could do and expected them to do, but only according to what they were able to endure. He knew exactly how far they could go in a day; and he made that his only consideration in arranging the marches. He had gone the same wilderness journey years before, and knew all about its roughness and heat and length, by personal experience. And so he said, “I will lead on softly.” “For ye have not passed this way heretofore” (Josh.3:4.).

We have not passed this way heretofore, but the Lord Jesus has. It is all untrodden and unknown ground to us, but He knows it all by personal experience. The steep bits that take away our breath, the stony bits that make our feet ache so, the hot shadeless stretches that make us feel so exhausted, the rushing rivers that we have to pass through — Jesus has gone through it all before us. “He was wearied with his journey.” Not some, but all the many waters went over Him, and yet did not quench His love. He was made a perfect Leader by the things which He suffered. “He knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.” Think of that when you are tempted to question the gentleness of His leading. He is remembering all the time; and not one step will He make you take beyond what your foot is able to endure. Never mind if you think it will not be able for the step that seems to come next; either He will so strengthen it that it shall be able, or He will call a sudden halt, and you shall not have to take it at all.–Frances Ridley Havergal

In “pastures green”? Not always; sometimes He
Who knowest best, in kindness leadeth me
In weary ways, where heavy shadows be.
So, whether on the hill-tops high and fair
I dwell, or in the sunless valleys, where
The shadows lie, what matter? He is there.

HILLS AND VALLEYS

January 2, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“The land whither ye go to possess it is a land of hills and valleys and drinketh water of the rain of heaven; a land which the Lord thy God careth for: the eyes of the Lord are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even to the end of the year.” (Deuteronomy 11:11-12)

Today, dear friends, we stand upon the verge of the unknown. There lies before us the new year and we are going forth to possess it. Who can tell what we shall find? What new experiences, what changes shall come, what new needs shall arise? But here is the cheering, comforting, gladdening message from our Heavenly Father, “The Lord thy God careth for it.”

All our supply is to come from the Lord. Here are springs that shall never dry; here are fountains and streams that shall never be cut off. Here anxious one, is the gracious pledge of the Heavenly Father. If He be the Source of our mercies they can never fail us. No heat, no drought can parch that river, “the streams whereof make glad the city of God.”

The land is a land of hills and valleys. It is not all smooth nor all down hill. If life were all one dead level the dull sameness would oppress us; we want the hills and the valleys. The hills collect the rain for a hundred fruitful valleys. Ah, so it is grace and brings down the shower of blessing; the hills, the bleak hills of life that we wonder at and perhaps grumble at, bring down showers. How many have perished in the wilderness, buried under its golden sands, who would have lived and thriven in the hill-country; how many would have been killed by the frost, blighted with winds, swept desolate of tree and fruit but for the hill- stern, hard, rugged, so steep to climb. God’s hills are a gracious protection for His people against their foes!

We cannot tell what loss and sorrow and trial are doing. Trust only. The Father comes near to take our hand and lead us on our way today. It shall be a good, a blessed new year!–Streams in the Desert

He leads us on by paths we did not know;
Upward He leads us, though our steps be slow,
Though oft we faint and falter on the way,
Though storms and darkness oft obscure the day;
Yet when the clouds are gone,
We know He leads us on.
He leads us on through all the unquiet years;
Past all our dreamland hopes, and doubts and fears,
He guides our steps, through all the tangled maze
Of losses, sorrows, and o’er clouded days;
We know His will is done;
And still He leads us on.
