NUMBERING OUR DAYS

January 2, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. “– Psalm 90:12

Over the years I have started the year by thinking on this verse more than any other. I have preached on it on numerous occasions and never cease to see the need for meditating wise request. I recently ran across the following article by one of my favorite writers and thought it just might give you some fresh ideas on the verse. J. R. Miller wrote:

“There are several ways of numbering our days. One way is merely to count them off as we tear off the daily leaves of our calendar. Each evening a man has one day less to live. But that is not true numbering. Another, way is merely to count the days into the aggregate of life. A man is one day older, but that is all. He is no better. He has left no worthy record on the day’s page. The true numbering, is that which fills the days as they pass—with records of godly and beautiful living, and with lines of growth in character.

Just now we are looking back over the story of a closing year. What have we given the days to keep for us? What lessons of wisdom have we learned from them, as one by one they have passed? There is little good in worrying over the failures of the year—but we ought to learn from our past. He is the wise man, not who makes no mistakes—but who does not repeat his mistakes.”

ONLY ONE LIFE

January 2, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

I jokingly said, ” I think I will write a poem called ‘The Day After Christmas’,” I see no need to explain why, nor what it might say– you’ve experienced it for yourself. Right? You wake up that morning with an automatic “To Do” list on your mind. We realize that the Christmas rush isn’t over! But let’s be honest, while the day after reminds us of that, it really isn’t all that much different than any other day. There are always more things to do than there is time to do them. We live with a never ending “to do” list. We must, therefore, choose wisely what we will do– we can’t do it all.

As we end the old year and enter the new, perhaps it would do us all good to have a copy of C. T, Studd’s poem “Only One Life” posted on our wall where we could read it every morning. While most Christians have heard the phrase “Only one life, twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.” very few have ever read the entire poem. So, I’m going to give you the opportunity to do so, and I hope you will take time to really read it. Who knows, you just might want to post it on your wall!

Two little lines I heard one day,
Traveling along life’s busy way;
Bringing conviction to my heart,
And from my mind would not depart;
Only one life, twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, yes only one,
Soon will its fleeting hours be done;
Then, in ‘that day’ my Lord to meet,
And stand before His Judgement seat;
Only one life,’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, the still small voice,
Gently pleads for a better choice
Bidding me selfish aims to leave,
And to God’s holy will to cleave;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, a few brief years,
Each with its burdens, hopes, and fears;
Each with its days I must fulfill,
living for self or in His will;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

When this bright world would tempt me sore,
When Satan would a victory score;
When self would seek to have its way,
Then help me Lord with joy to say;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Give me Father, a purpose deep,
In joy or sorrow Thy word to keep;
Faithful and true what e’er the strife,
Pleasing Thee in my daily life;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Oh let my love with fervor burn,
And from the world now let me turn;
Living for Thee, and Thee alone,
Bringing Thee pleasure on Thy throne;
Only one life, “twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, yes only one,
Now let me say,”Thy will be done”;
And when at last I’ll hear the call,
I know I’ll say “twas worth it all”;
Only one life,’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last. ”

— extra stanza —

Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.
And when I am dying, how happy I’ll be,
If the lamp of my life has been burned out for Thee

PREFERRING ONE ANOTHER

December 30, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;“–Rom 12:10

After all these centuries we have not learned how to live together in peace. The natural man is selfish, proud, and cruel. He prefers himself above all others. He uses or abuses people to get what he wants. He is a  lover of pleasure rather than lover of God. Consequentially our society is troubled by racism, cronyism, chauvinism, nepotism, prejudice, partiality, etc. Politics is a good example of man’s rotten behavior. It is sickening! But as awful as it is, I see something even more troubling. Over and over again I observe the same type of behavior in professing Christians.

A study of all the “one another” statements in the Bible tells us how we should relate to one another, but we fail miserably. People neglect and ignore those they should love the most and nearly break their neck being nice to those they can use to satisfy some selfish desire. While they fawn over some and stroke their ego because it will benefit them in some way, they hardly speak at all to others. They smother some with affection and hold others at arms length. They lend a helping hand to those who can return the favor in some manner and use others as a door-mat. They are “Johnny-on-the-spot” for some and treat others like they have the plague. It is absolutely sickening to see how sinfully selfish we are.

We sing, “I’ll tell the world that I’m a Christian“, but maybe we should first convince our neighbor or our family–they probably have a different idea. I wonder why! Our rotten behavior has made the glorious gospel repulsive to others. We boast about our great love for Christ and then treat our own family worse than strangers. It is no wonder that some have given up on church and labelled Christians as hypocrites. They are hurt, and for good reason. If anyone has out done the politicians when it comes to rotten behavior it is people like that.

Were I to ask if you love your family or friends everyone would answer in the affirmative– after all it would be embarrassing not to do so. But sometimes the evidence says just the opposite. Anyone can say, “I love you” and most people do, but showing it is another matter. What most people mean is “I love you so long as you meet my expectations”. Unlike God’s love for us, we tend to “love” people conditionally. We claim we love them, but as soon as they fail to meet our demands or live up to our standards we withdraw our “love”. That isn’t love! That isn’t even honest. Rom. 12:9 says, “Let love be without dissimulation..”, and 1 Pet. 1:22 says, “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:”. Think about it! –HDS

GOD’S WONDERFUL WORD

December 29, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.“–Psa. 119:11

The more I study the Bible the more I realize that there is more to learn. It raises as many questions as it answers. The person with a nominal knowledge of the Bible might assume that he knows enough, but the person who digs deep into the Word realizes that there are yet greater depths to be explored. Even the greatest scholars have but touched the hem of the garment. We don’t master the Bible, it masters us.

Some might assume that the Bible is a boring book, but that is only true of those who are not well acquainted with it. Those who spend much time in that blessed book get lost in its wonder. How can they not? As someone said, “The Bible is a book man could not have written if he would and would not have written if he could”. There is nothing else like it! The Bible is in a class all by itself. He who ignores it deprives himself of great benefits and blessings. Why would you do that?

But as exciting as Bible study is, there is something of even greater importance than that. The best thing about the Bible is that it meets needs–even the deepest needs of our life. There is a sense in which you could say that it meets all our needs (2 Pet. 1:3-4). No one is prepared for the tough challenges of life unless they are well versed in the Bible. And, there are no substitutes. Many read every new best selling book that comes along, attend seminars and conferences, listen to CD’s, and watch all the TV preachers, but they fail to study the Bible–and it shows.

Be honest, how much time time do you spend each day studying God’s Word? You owe it to yourself to spend as much time as possible in the Word. You can’t spend your time doing anything better. Truth be know we all waste a lot of time doing things that are of little or no value. That’s a costly mistake! Hiding it in your heart transforms your life!–HDS

A COMFORTING LETTER

December 26, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. “— Jer 29:11

We have much to learn from the good advice given in this letter.

These exiles were unwilling to settle in the land to which they had been transported. They were always fretting and planning; talking of the past and contriving plans for returning to their own land and to the inheritance which they had forfeited. Therefore this letter was sent, not only to them, but to all in similar circumstances.

Are you in captivity? Your circumstances are the restraint and fetters that hold you. No prisoner in a cell could be more helpless than you are. You cannot do as you would, but you can be. Be the best you can where you are, and wait the Lord’s leisure. It is by fidelity in discharging present obligations that you become fitted for better work.

Consider the needs of those around you (Jer 29:7). In this the story of Joseph is a remarkable example. When he was cast into prison, he set to work to minister to the prisoners there. What a light and comfort emanated from him, as he went to and fro among them, taking a personal interest in each—“Wherefore look ye so sadly to-day?” (Gen 40:6-7). In the peace of those to whom we minister, we shall find our own peace.

Words of comfort and hope were spoken to the captives. Hard though their outward lot seemed, God was thinking thoughts of peace, not of evil, with respect to them. So with us; we may be having a bad time; it may appear as though everything were against us, hard, comfortless, uninviting. But in His holy heaven God is thinking about you, and His thoughts are those of peace, and not of evil. Therefore the horizon is flushed with hope. There is a good time coming, and you will forget this present, as waters that pass away. There is an allotted time to your present trouble. God will surely visit you, and perform His good word towards you.

In the meanwhile, we must live a life of constant prayer. “Ye shall call upon Me, and I will hearken unto you; ye shall seek Me, and I will be found of you” (Jer 29:12-14). We must live in a spirit of prayer and faith and converse with God. For all these things God will be enquired of, to do them.

For all Thy gracious care of us we reverently thank Thee, and if Thou hast permitted things to happen which have tried us sore and filled us with bitterness, help us to believe in Thine infinite love which chastens us, that through the discipline of our life we may be made partakers of Thy holiness. Amen –F.B. Meyer
