LIVING BY FAITH

November 8, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.” – Habakkuk 2:3-4

As I preached last Sunday, just as Paul, on his way to Jerusalem, said, “I go..not knowing the things that shall befall me..”(Acts 20:22) we know not what the future holds for us–but we know Who holds the future. We are forced to face the future without all the facts, but the facts regarding God gives us faith to face whatever the future holds. Adrian Rogers said, “Don’t let an election steal your song“–then he wrote the following”

“Habakkuk says that in a day such as ours, the just are going to live “by faith.” Put your faith in God’s facts—that He is king evermore. That’s the way you’re going to live in this day and this age. Why? Because faith is that quality that keeps us going in dark days. Faith sees beyond the physical to the spiritual. Faith sees beyond the present to the future. Faith sees beyond the temporary to the eternal. Faith does not judge by the appearances of the hour.

Don’t you lose your faith. Faith cannot fail. Sin cannot win. Faith is the only message that will see us through, and it’s the only force that can change anything. Let me say that again. Faith is the only message that will see us through. It’s the only force that can change anything.

If we want a better land and a better life, we have to live by faith. Government cannot make us better; only the Gospel of Jesus Christ can do that.”

HUMILITY REWARDED

November 7, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“He that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” (Luke 18:14)

It ought not to be difficult for us to humble ourselves, for what have we to be proud of? We ought to take the lowest place without being told to do so. If we are sensible and honest, we shall be little in our own eyes. Especially before the Lord in prayer we shall shrink to nothing. There we cannot speak of merit, for we have none; our one and only appeal must be to mercy: “God be merciful to me a sinner.”

Here is a cheering word from the throne. We shall be exalted by the Lord if we humble ourselves. For us the way upward is downhill. When we are stripped of self we are clothed with humility, and this is the best of wear. The Lord will exalt us in peace and happiness of mind; He will exalt us into knowledge of His Word and fellowship with Himself; He will exalt us in the enjoyment of sure pardon and justification. The Lord puts His honors upon those who can wear them to the honor of the Giver. He gives usefulness, acceptance, and influence to those who will not be puffed up by them but will be abased by a sense of greater responsibility. Neither God nor man will care to lift up a man who lifts up himself; but both God and good men unite to honor modest worth.

O Lord, sink me in self that I may rise in Thee.–(Charles Spurgeon)

VOTING GOD OUT

November 6, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“…haters of God..“–Rom. 1:30

What a shocking thought! The uninformed might suppose that this refers to a very small class of extraordinarily vile sinners, but it goes far beyond that. They are unaware of the fact that the natural man is an enemy to God. Were that not the case there would be no need for a Redeemer and reconciliation. The fact is, “the carnal mind is enmity against God..” (Rom. 8:7). That is a terrible position to be in, but those who hate God are there by their own choice.

Although God has given such a revelation of Himself that we are “without excuse” (Rom. 1:20), the willful sinner would rather create a god in his own image rather than be controlled by the God who created him. Having the freedom to receive or to reject God, you could say, he opts to vote God out and become his own god– “worshiping the creature more than the Creator” (Rom. 1:25). In this we see the root of man’s problem, the reason for his condemnation, and the record of his folly in a nut shell.

Such sinners might love religion, but they loathe the Redeemer. They hate God who is holy and say in their heart “We will not have Him rule over us”. They would rather bow down to a blind idol made of stone than the living all-seeing God. Their carnal hearts are so corrupt that they enjoy and embrace the very things that destroy them, rather than the life-giving God who loves them. Although God “commandeth all men every where to repent” (Acts 17:30), they continue on as enemies in their rebellion against Him which leads to their ruin.

Indeed, the God hater has voted God out– self sets on the throne, misery fills his days, sin marks his ways, and he lives as a slave to his own lusts. Not until the end, when every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Christ is Lord, does he realize that he cast a losing vote. What about you? How will you vote? “Choose you this day whom ye will serve..“(Josh. 24:15). I’m voting for Jesus!  –HDS

OUR HERITAGE

November 5, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways. The Lord shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life. Yea, thou shalt see thy children’s children, and peace upon Israel.” – Psalm 128:1, 5-6

Right now our nation is sick unto death because she has forgotten God. But listen to this and let it burn itself into your soul. In 1821 John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States, said,

“The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: It connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity. From the day of the Declaration, the American people were bound by the laws of God.”

The principles of civil government and Christianity were linked together in an unbreakable bond. Nearly all citizens acknowledged Christian, biblical principles as the rules of their conduct.

In 1913 President Woodrow Wilson said,

“America was born to exemplify the devotion to the elements of righteousness which are derived from Holy Scriptures.”

In March, 1931, Congress adopted “The Star-Spangled Banner” as our national anthem. Do you know what the fourth stanza says? “Blessed with victory and peace, may this Heaven-rescued land praise the power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must when our cause it is just. And this be our motto, ‘In God is our trust.’”

God blessed America when she was rooted in spiritual principles and truths. Praise God for our Christian and Judaic heritage being written into our very fabric. And pray for your nation according to 2 Chronicles 7:14.–Adrian Rogers

STAY ALERT

November 4, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“..He wist not that the LORD was departed from him.” –Judges 16:20

I’ve probably said it 1000 time–“Backsliding is like a slow-leak rather than a blow-out”. Just as spiritual growth is so slow that we don’t feel it happening, so it is with backsliding. When we see the fall of a man it appears to have happened overnight, when actually he had been in a spiritual decline for months or years. Let us learn a lesson from Samson.

F. B. Meyer said, “Beware of unconscious deterioration! Grey hairs may be here and there upon us without our knowing it. The Lord may be gone out on feet so noiseless, that we are not aware that His Spirit has glided along the corridor, and through the doorway, whispering, Let us depart.

Deterioration is unconscious because it is so gradual. The rot that sets in on autumn fruit is very gradual. The damp that silences the violin or piano does its work almost imperceptibly. Satan is too knowing to plunge us into some outrageous sin at a bound. He has sappers and miners engaged long before the explosion, in hollowing subterranean passages through the soul, and filling them with explosives.

Spiritual declension blunts our sensibility. The first act of the burglar is to gag the voice that might alarm, and poison the watch-dog. So, sin blinds our eyes, and dulls our keen alertness to the presence of evil. Thus, the stages of our relapse are obvious to all eyes but our own. We are drugged as we are being carried off captives.

The progress of evil within us is a matter of unconsciousness, largely because we are quick to discover reasons to justify our decadence. We glaze over the real state of affairs. We call sins by other names. We insist on considerations which in our eyes appear to justify our conduct. We still attend to our religious duties, and try to persuade ourselves that it is with us as in times past. To avoid deterioration we must ever watch and pray, and realize that we are the temple of the Holy Ghost. Then shall the peace of God as a sentry guard our hearts and our thoughts in Christ Jesus.”

Regardless of how knowledgeable, talented, strong, or famous you are the possibility of you falling and bringing reproach upon Christ never goes away. It can happen to anyone. Stay alert!–HDS
