CONSIDER THE CONSEQUENCES

November 3, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!”–James 3:5

I’ve often said, sometimes when a person sins they would have recovered from it had it not been for all the talk about it. And sometimes the person makes things right with God, but the gossip about the sin does more harm than the sin itself did. The following from Senior Living illustrates what I’m talking about:

In a small village in Borneo, well-intentioned health workers once sprayed the straw huts with the now-illegal substance, DDT. The purpose of the spraying was to control the mosquito population, thereby reducing cases of life-threatening malaria among the tribe. Little did they realize the unintended consequences they’d incur.

The spray didn’t kill just the mosquitos. It also killed the lizards that normally inhabited the thatch walls of the huts. The village cats then ate the lizards and died also. That resulted in an unrestrained influx of rats into the village.

Not only that, but the lizards’ demise left the population of straw-consuming caterpillars free to reproduce. They eventually gobbled up the straw roofs of the huts.

Almost every action has unintended consequences. Sometimes they’re harmless; other times they aren’t. But it’s important, as believers in Christ, for us to think through the consequences of our actions.

For example, before we repeat something we heard about someone else, it’s important to stop and think about how it may impact that person. It might cause us to think twice before speaking!

Be mindful of the consequences of your actions and make wise choices to do what’s right!

Pray that God would keep you mindful of the consequences your actions have.

GROWING IS SLOW GOING

November 2, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”–2 Pet. 3:18

The Bible is clear about the fact that God expects His children to grow–to mature spiritually. So it stands to reason, and the Bible affirms, that nourishment is necessary. That’s why it is essential that we feed on God’s Word daily. Merely getting a meal on Sunday isn’t nearly enough. I think most Christians see this need and have attempted to set aside time alone with God each day, but it’s short-lived. Something distracts or discourages them and they quit. While many factors might enter into this, I suspect one of the main reasons is that they feel it isn’t all that helpful. They don’t see any immediate results so they quit. They hoped for obvious and instant results and when they don’t see any change they throw in the towel and say,”I tried but it didn’t make any difference”.

But, whether we’re talking about the physical or spiritual, we can’t always perceive progress. Even when we eat right and exercise regularly we don’t notice immediate physical changes. Growth, physical or spiritual, is slow and imperceptible. Change happens little by little. You can lift weights all day but it won’t change the size of your biceps overnight. Such effort fails to bring a drastic change, yet it is a necessary part of the process.

Even so, Bible study and prayer doesn’t transform you into a spiritual giant overnight, but it is essential for your growth and it is helping you in other ways that you might not even be aware of. Rather than worrying about the rate and extent of your growth you should simply do what God tells you to do. We should never lose our yearning for learning, nor our desire for serving. We must remember that the learning is for living. As we put into practice what God God teaches us growth will be sure to follow. And, that growth will come by the Spirit of God as we obey the will of God (2 Cor. 3:18)–not by human effort. Make no mistake about it, you need God’s Word everyday!

A STUDENT OF THE SCRIPTURES

November 1, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.“—Heb. 5:12

For 50 years I have repeatedly declared that every Christian should be a student of God’s Word. We should all become teachers in a sense, but you can’t communicate what you don’t comprehend. We must be taught before we can teach. Since God speaks to us through His Word, what could be more important than this? I’m not talking about simply reading a section of the Scriptures each day– although we should do that. Nor am I talking about merely reading a devotion that someone has written–although that can be profitable. I’m talking about actually studying the Bible yourself. Think of yourself as a teacher and study a portion of the Bible as though you were going to teach it the next day. Any teacher will tell you that they learn more from their lessons than anyone else.

Yet, try as I have, I feel that I have failed miserably in convincing people to make Bible study a daily habit. Maybe I haven’t tried hard enough. Or, perhaps I haven’t used the right method. I’m certainly willing to take some of the blame. However, when all is said and done the responsibility lies on their doorstep. Even if I did nothing to encourage you, and in fact tried to stop you, that shouldn’t dissuade you from studying the Bible. Considering the wonder of the Word why should you need anyone to encourage you to study it? It is so amazing how could it not get your attention and win your affection? It is so helpful how could you possibly fail to see the need?

The only thing that keeps me from studying more is the demands placed upon me by the Word. If I had no other duties I could be content studying the Bible eight hours a day. Maybe you’re thinking, “Well that’s just because you’re a preacher and that’s what you are suppose to do”. But you’re wrong. Were I never to preach again my love for and joy in Bible study would still be there. And I’m convinced that those who truly see the wonder and worth of the Word feel the same. I don’t understand how any child of God wouldn’t have that same love for the Word of God. Why should anyone have to beg and plead to encourage you to study the Bible. You don’t have to beg healthy people to eat. If there is a prolonged loss of appetite there is something wrong– whether it is food or the Bible. Our attitude should be exactly as that of Job–“..I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food“(Job 23:12).

Forget the lame excuses–such as “I’m too busy. I just don’t have enough time”. You have as much time as anyone else. You have time to eat, sleep, work and play. Why no time for the Bible? It’s not a matter of time, it’s a matter of priorities and priorities are based on values. When we see the value of Bible study we make time for it. People neglect it because they fail to see the need for it. In their mind it is not essential. They feel as though they can get along just fine without it, but they are wrong!

Getting people to see their need is what’s difficult. You can make a list of all the benefits and preach sermons about it, but that doesn’t assure that they will get the message. Although the Bible clearly declares and describes man’s need for God’s Word few are impressed enough to do anything about it. Whatever it takes, every person has to decide for themselves. For some, a few it seems, instruction is enough, but for others it takes a need or crisis of some sort. They won’t develop a desire for the Word until they are devastated in some way. Then out of desperation they might turn to the Bible for help. The truth is that you need help whether you realize it or not and Bible study affects you whether you know it or not. Just do it then watch God work. –HDS

PLEASING GOD

October 31, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.“–Psa. 147:11

GOD takes pleasure in our faith. “Without faith it is impossible to please Him“; but surely the alternative is true, that our faith is precious in His sight, though it be only as the touch of the hem of His garment.

God works in us to will and to do of His good pleasure. The Apostle says that we ought to walk so as to please God. How can we walk thus? It is not within our power. But how blessed to know that if only we will work out what He works in, and abandon ourselves to Him, He will perfect us in every good work to do His will (Heb 13:21).

There are many ways in which we may please God. Generosity is a sacrifice well-pleasing and acceptable unto God; obedience is well-pleasing unto the Lord; a holy and humble walk with God, like Enoch’s, will elicit this testimony, that it has pleased God. Let us not disappoint Him, but “walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing.”

O God, we pray that Thou wouldst make us what Thou wouldst have us become, that we may perfectly please Thee, and worthily magnify Thy Holy Name. AMEN. — F.B. Meyer

THE ANSWER

October 30, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”–Galatians 3:13-14

A middle school teacher recently shared some of the answers he received from students on assignments. One student said, “The pistol of a flower is its only protection against insects.” Another thought the word  germinate  meant to “become a naturalized German citizen” and that a vacuum was where the pope lived. A fibula, said another student, is a small lie; and a terminal illness is what happens when you get sick at the airport.

Job had a lot of questions, but he and his friends kept getting their answers mixed up. But on the final exam, Job got it right when he said, “I know that my Redeemer liveth” (Job 19:25).

All our great and confusing questions can be answered in our living Redeemer. If you’re suffering, He can ease your pain. If you’re confused, He can clear your mind. If you’re fearful, He can give you peace. If you have bad habits, He can help you conquer them. If you struggle with guilt, He can forgive your sins. If you’re afraid of death, He can give you eternal life.

Our Redeemer is the answer to all the questions in our hearts.– Turning Point
