THE PROMISE OF HIS PRESENCE

August 20, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.” Exodus 33:14

Yesterday I spoke about being “Near to God” and how prayer brings us there. To think that sinful man can be near God who is perfect is a glorious thought. His presence gives us courage to face danger, comfort to endure difficulties, companionship when we are lonely, and counsel when we are confused. Knowing He will never leave nor forsake us changes our outlook on life. Regarding the Lord’s presence, James Smith wrote:

“So the Lord promised Moses, and so He has promised us. Let us never venture any where, if we have reason to think the Lord will not favour us with His presence there. The Lord’s presence produces holiness, imparts power, fires with zeal, brings into union, and often fills with comfort, joy, and peace. His presence is our glory, and it will yield us support under losses, crosses, and bereavements. Let us plead for the Lord’s presence to go with us; let us expect it; let us not be satisfied with anything else. He went with Moses, and he persevered; with Joshua, and he conquered; with David, and he reached the throne; with Paul, and he was more than a conqueror. Nothing can be a substitute for the Lord’s presence; and as it is so graciously promised, let us not attempt to find a substitute, but daily cry, “If Thy presence go not with me, carry me not up hence.” Jesus has said, “If a man love Me, he will keep My words; and My Father will love him, and WE will come unto him, and make our abode with him.”

O Lord, be ever near us,
Fix in our hearts Thy home:
By Thine appearing cheer us,
And let Thy kingdom come:
Fulfil our expectation,
And give our souls to prove,
Thine uttermost salvation,
Thine everlasting love.

NEAR TO GOD

August 19, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.” Psalms 145:18

We sing, “Just a closer walk with Thee”. and we delight in being near to those who are close to God. But how is it that we are able to get close to the Lord? According to our text God draws near to those who go to Him in prayer. James Smith said it well in the following:

“Real prayer is calling upon God. He is our Father: we are His children. We have nothing; He has all things to bestow, and is willing to give them. From a sense of need, we call on the Lord for a supply; from a sense of weakness, we call on Him for strength; from a sense of guilt, we call on Him for pardon. Being diseased, we cry for health; being troubled, for comfort and peace; being in distress, for relief and deliverance. We go out of self to Jesus, accepting His invitation, to plead His promise, and find Him faithful. Our God is always near the praying soul, not merely as the omnipresent Jehovah, but as our faithful Friend. He is near us, lovingly to listen to what we have to lay before Him; mercifully to relieve our miseries, be they what they may; graciously to help in every difficulty or danger. Beloved, our God is near us. He is attentive to us this morning; let us lay all our concerns before Him: He loves to listen to the often-told tale; He has patience with us, blessings for us, and will do us good.”

O Lord, each day renew my strength,
And let me see Thy face at length,
With all Thy people yonder;
With them in heaven Thy love declare,
And sing Thy praise for ever there,
With gratitude and wonder.

TREASURES IN HEAVEN

August 18, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…“– Matt. 6:20

God does much for us that we can’t do for ourselves, but here is something we must do ourselves and we do it “for” ourselves. When some people think of Christianity all they think about is what it will cost them, what they have to give up. They are so focused on the giving that they forget about the getting. Indeed the Bible does speak about the need for us to give– Jesus didn’t pull any punches when He spoke of the demands of discipleship. He said, “..whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:33). But we must never forget that the value of what is gained far exceeds the cost of what is given! That’s why some speak about “banking in heaven” and “making eternal investments”. As the old song says, “It pays to serve Jesus“.

It is noteworthy that Jesus said, “lay up for yourselves”. Isn’t that great! This is proof that Christ is concerned about your welfare and that it is okay for you to be concerned about it. The key is that we are to lay up “treasures in heaven“, not on earth. The treasures on earth shall all pass away. You will lose them because they will pass from your grasp or you will leave then because you pass– either way, you can’t take them with you. That’s why you don’t see a hearse pulling a U-haul trailer or pockets in a shroud. The only things you will have after you die are the treasures you laid up in heaven.

The famous missionary C. T. Studd said, “Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last!” Every time you do something for Christ you do something for yourself. When you are faithful to Christ you are doing what is best for yourself. So, be good to yourself! Missionary Jim Elliot said, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose”.

LOVING LIES

August 17, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“…..thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are….” Matt. 6:5

Have you ever seen someone crying for attention, fishing for compliments, begging to be praised? If you have been on Facebook you know what I mean. But perhaps you yourself are guilty of doing that. Would you be pleased if I said, “You are the most beautiful/handsome person I’ve ever seen. I’ve never met anyone as smart, wise, good, loving, and kind as you are. You amaze me. I wish everyone could be just like you! You deserve much more than you have. It’s a shame that everyone doesn’t believe everything you say, do everything you desire, give you everything you want, bow down at you feet, kiss your hand, and praise you all day every day. What’s wrong with them? Can’t they see your greatness?”

Would that make you happy? Well, I hate to disappoint you, but you will never hear that from me, and I doubt you will ever hear it from anyone else. The fact of the matter is that if hearing that would make you happy it is proof that it isn’t true. Anyone who longs to hear lies because it makes them feel good about themselves is far from perfect. They are like the hypocrites that Jesus warned us about in Matt. 6:1-6, who love to be seen and praised by men.

It’s not my opinion, nor yours, that really matters. God’s opinion is the only one that counts. What He thinks matters much! Rather than longing for lies we ought to be looking for ways to please God. Believe it or not, it is only by pleasing Him that we can ever truly be pleased.

If you want to hear something that will make you feel good, consider this– God tells the truth about ourselves. He tells us we are vile, filthy, guilty sinners, deserving of a devil’s hell—yet He loves us! How does that make you feel? The truth can hurt, but it also can heal. God not only proclaims His love for us, He proved it at Calvary. He suffered, bled and died that we might be saved. And that ain’t no lie! Rather than loving lies, listen to God—“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.“(John 8:32).

WITH CHRIST

August 16, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:”–Philippians 1:23

Paul does not say, “I have a desire to depart, and to be in Heaven.” Oh no! It is far better than that.
Nor is it, “I have a desire to depart and to be free of troubles.”
No, it is, “My desire is to depart and be with Christ!”

“With Christ! With Christ!” This is honey in the mouth, and the more often you turn it over, the sweeter it becomes!

Heaven is not merely a place of golden streets, and pinnacles glittering with the jewels. No! That is not enough for the believer. It is, “With Christ!” All the pearly gates, and all the seraphic praises–fail to make the Heaven of our desire. Our Heaven is to “be with Christ!” It is not the glory of the place–it is the beauty of the person!

“With Christ!” Oh, how shall I illustrate it? It is the magnet that makes the soul tremble, and will not let it rest until it points true towards it.

“With Christ!” Yes, that is the distant haven on which the mariner gazes as the ship rocks and reels, as the timbers creak, and as the storm blast whistles through the rigging.

“With Christ!” These words are the trumpet note that awakens all the heroism in a Christian’s soul, and makes him willing to dash into the thickest part of the fray. He says, “I can fight my way through ten thousand foes, for on the other side it is with Christ!”– Archibald Brown
