DON’T BLAME GOD

August 15, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.”–Job 14:1

Here is a verse that even unbelievers must admit is true. There is no denying this fact. No one escapes the world without difficulties and disappointments. Everyone has their story. And, just about everyone wants to blame someone for something– even if it is God!

I recently read about a woman who, while describing her daughter’s suffering before she died, accused God of “sitting on His hands” rather than helping. Yeah it really happened. And, if the truth be known, although they wouldn’t say it, many others feel the same way. They are bitter and they blame God for their misery.

Why is it that we feel we must always blame something or someone for our problems? I am aware of the stock answers, such as– “Because I am frustrated”, “Because I am confused”, “Because I’m angry”, “Because I am in pain”, etc. But, why the need to know? Would knowing the reason solve the problem? We might think so, but I doubt it.

Would we not be more at peace if we simply acknowledged that it is impossible to understand some things? Rather than blaming God for the problem we ought to trust Him as our help in time of need. We ought to acquaint ourselves with His ways and be at peace. We ought to rely upon His promises and rejoice. We must realize that His plan extends far beyond this vale of tears into eternity–as Paul said in Phil. 3:20-21 “For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.” We see nothing in context if we ignore what God has prepared for those that love Him. It is only when we consider the big picture that we are able to cope with our present problems and continue on in pursuit of life’s purpose.

We get bitter because we think we deserve better. However, if we could see ourselves as we really are we would never feel deprived or mistreated. Believing we deserve nothing enables us to be content with anything. Knowing we all have it better than we deserve and that “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights..“(James 1:17) encourages us to rejoice even in our troubles. When we fail to do this let us blame no one but ourselves.

A MERRY HEART

August 14, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.“–Proverbs 15:15

There is a class of little annoyances such as we make for ourselves by a complaining, or an overly fastidious temperament. There are some who make such a fuss about trifles, tormenting themselves, and worrying others by a perpetual fault-finding and discontent — as every trifling irritation is magnified to a mountain — that all pleasure is spoiled by their presence!

It is a good rule in little things, as well as great things, that “what can’t be cured — should be endured” — and endured cheerfully!

I am not advocating slovenly and careless endurance of little vexations which may be remedied — let them be set right by all means, and the more quietly as well as quickly, the better. But I have observed people who were most ludicrously discomposed by trifles which neither they nor anyone else could remedy, and which should have been overlooked with a smile, if noticed at all.

There are many overly finicky people in the world, who groan over such trifling irritations. It is really ludicrous to hear the gravity with which some people will allude to the fact of the road being dusty, even alleging that as a reason for not going a walk; others are as much afraid of a shower; others of too much sunshine; some are terrified at the idea of being over-heated.

There is no end to these idle fancies and fears! If you laugh at these miserable people — then they think you are unfeeling. If you sympathize with them — then they multiply and increase their petty annoyances!

Let us all beware of making much of little irritations. Let us learn to laugh at them, remembering how very annoying such complaints are to others, as well as bothersome to ourselves.

A cheerful person who refuses to notice trifles or be aggravated by them — soon ceases to feel them! While to those who seem to find a perverse pleasure in dwelling on, and being daunted by them — these little discomforts will actually become real cares, and will eat out half the comfort of their lives!–Henrietta Wilson, 1852

“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” Proverbs 17:22

WHEN GOD IS SILENT

August 13, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“ But he answered her not a word…” Matthew 15:23

There are many things in life we do not understand and we want an answer–yet God isn’t talking. Over and over again we ask “Why?”, but there is no explanation. We pray, but fail to receive what we want–does God not care? Indeed He does, but that doesn’t mean He gives us everything we want. J. R. Miller explained it like this:

“Jesus is not so tender-hearted, that he cannot tolerate to see us suffer—when suffering is the best experience for us. He does not immediately lift burdens from our shoulders when it is needful for our growth that we bear the burdens longer. There is a mushy sentimentality in many people’s ideas about Christ—as if he were too gentle to endure the sight of suffering. It is possible to be too tender toward pain. It is possible for parents to be too emotionally kind to their children. Uncontrolled pity is great weakness, and it is ofttimes very injurious.

Christ’s tenderness is never too tender to be wise—as well as tender. He never makes the mistake of yielding to anyone’s entreaties, when denial would be better than acquiescence. He never lets us have what we want—because he cannot bear to say “no” to our tearful cries. He is not so tenderhearted as to allow his own disciples to go unchastened, when only by chastisement can he promote their spiritual growth.

But one thing we must not forget, it is love which prompts his severity. He was silent here, that, in the end, he might give the full, rich blessing he wanted to give this woman—but which she could not receive at the first. He denies us, and is silent to us when we cry—that he may draw out our faith, and give us his best blessings by and by.”

WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

August 12, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.“–2 Chron. 1:7

Put yourself in Solomon’s shoes, picture yourself in his place, replace his name with yours—what would you ask for? Would you chose possessions, pleasure, position, power, or praise? If God granted your request would you be satisfied? Just suppose you could–

— walk into the bank and cash a check for any amount.

— indulge in whatever activity that delights you the most.

— enter the White House and pick any office suited to your whims.

— rule over any nation, corporation, or organization that you desire.

— have your name in lights, your picture in the paper, a star in Hollywood, a spot in the Hall of Fame, the masses bowing down at your feet.

Then would you be happy? If so there is something terribly wrong in your life. If your affections are set upon the things of earth rather than things above you are out of step with God. Your priorities are wrong. If you are a Christian you can never be truly happy until the desires of your heart are in line with what God wants for your life. We ought to feel as Paul did when he said, “But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,” (Phil. 3:7-8).

Others have had those things mentioned above and were miserable. If granted to you, you would probably fare no better than they. It is so sad to see multitudes spending their lives in pursuit of things that can never satisfy and are of no eternal value. Christians should do better! Solomon chose wisely. He said, “Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people…”. He chose that which would enable him to fulfill God’s purpose for his life, and it was granted. God help us to do the same!

HEIRS OF THE KINGDOM

August 11, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?“James 2:5

He raised the poor from the dust, and the beggar from the dunghill; such were we by nature, but through rich grace we shall inherit the throne of glory. He has prepared for us, promised to us, and will bestow upon us a kingdom. A kingdom in which His glory will be seen, felt, and enjoyed for ever. In which all His riches of grace, mercy, and glory will be displayed. In which peace, joy, and pleasure will eternally reign. A kingdom which cannot be moved, and will never know a change. But who are the acknowledged heirs? The poor of this world, who are poor in spirit. The rich in faith, who believe in God, in Jesus, who exercise faith on the precious promises, and whose faith is proved to be good by the works they produce. Those who love God from a knowledge of His love to them, and as the effect of His love being shed abroad in their hearts, by the Holy Ghost. Am I an heir? Are you, my friend? If so, rejoice and be exceeding glad; imitate those who through faith and patience now inherit the promises, and the end will crown the whole.(James Smith, 1840)

There shall your eyes with rapture view
The glorious Friend who died for you;
That died to ransom, died to raise
To crowns of joy, and songs of praise;
Jesus, to Thee I breathe my prayer!
Reveal, confirm my interest there.
