THE CHAIR OF DEATH

August 5, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.“–James 1:14-15

A number of years ago, a play was written called The Potato Creek Chair of Death. This was a rather bizarre theatrical work about a man who built a timing device he attached to a shotgun. The timer was set to go off at some point in the next hundred years. In front of the gun, a chair was placed where people who wanted to test their luck could sit for a minute at a time.

In the play, thrill seekers came from hundreds of miles around to have their minute in the chair and sit in the shell’s path. They all knew the gun could go off at any time, but they were gambling that it wouldn’t be during their minute in the chair.

Most people in real life probably wouldn’t dream of sitting in that chair. Yet, many of those very same people live their entire lives gambling that they can get away with sin, foolishly ignoring the risks of the inevitable self-destruction that sin ultimately brings.

Spiritually speaking, sitting in that chair is exactly what gambling with sin is like. And eventually, that sin will come back to bite and can even destroy you.

Don’t gamble with sin. Steer clear of sinful patterns of behavior and you’ll be able to live free from the self-inflicted pain, anguish, and destruction it will bring in your life.

Pray that God would open your eyes to any sinful patterns of behavior He wants to cleanse in your life for your good and His glory.( Senior Living)

LET GO

August 4, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

A well-known author once said: “Several years ago our family visited Niagara Falls. It was spring, and ice was rushing down the river. As I viewed the large blocks of ice flowing toward the falls, I could see that there were dead fish embedded in the ice. Gulls by the score were riding down the river feeding on the fish. As they came to the brink of the falls, their wings would go out, and they would escape from the falls.

“I watched one gull which seemed to delay and wondered when it would leave. It was engrossed in the fish, and when it finally came to the brink of the falls, out went its powerful wings. The bird flapped and flapped and even lifted the ice out of the water, and I thought it would escape. But it had delayed too long so that its claws had frozen into the ice. The weight of the ice was too great, and the gull plunged into the abyss.”

Although the bird had plenty of time to fly away, because it delayed it paid the price. Now think of this story in terms of the Christian life. When we become overly enthralled with the things of this world, they can bring us down.

The finest attractions of this world become deadly when we become overly attached to them. If we cannot give up the things of this world and focus on Christ, we cannot be used by Him. Our eyes must be upward on Christ rather than downward on this world.

Notice Hebrews 12:1, “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” God commands us to lay aside the things that weigh us down. He knows that we will not be able to run the course He has given us with the distractions of this world.

Take a moment now to think of the “weights” in your life. The bird’s weight was the dead fish. What is it that weighs you down or keeps you from living for the Lord? What hinders you from fully surrendering to God’s will for your life? Someone once said, “Delayed obedience is disobedience.” Don’t allow that weight to cause you to fall. It’s not worth disobeying God in order to hold on to it.

Some of you who have read this story before continue to cling to things that will destroy you—- please LET GO!

STRENGTH FOR THE DAY

August 3, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“…and as thy days, so shall thy strength be.“–Deut. 33:25

It’s a new day and it’s like a new leg on the journey along life’s road. We know not what a day might bring— what duty will call, what difficulty might present itself, what danger we might face, what defeats we might encounter, or what delights we might experience. It is a mystery. To avoid the fear of the unknown we must consider what we do know. And Christians know enough that they can bravely face the unknown.

Because of who we are and what we have in Christ we can rejoice. We also can rest as we rely upon Him for every need, knowing what He promised He will provide. He who is “the Way” will direct our steps. He who is a “Friend that sticketh closer than a brother” will never leave us. He who is the Wisdom of God will counsel us. He who has all power in heaven and earth is for us. Indeed we have no way of knowing what a day may hold, but due to Christ we can face it with confidence. We know we are in good hands and shall be well cared for. So we forge ahead knowing He is able and willing to meet our needs. We have then no need to worry.

God already knows what the future holds. He has a plan for each of us and the power to complete it. Don’t be shocked by surprises–God is never surprised, confused, or helpless. Whatever comes your way, He is “able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think” ( Eph. 3:20). Knowing God is able enables us. Knowing God cares relieves us of our cares. Now you are ready for the day! Be thankful for it and make good use of it—you won’t pass this way again!

STRENGTHENED BY RESISTANCE

August 2, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.”–James 1:2-3

In December of 1987, a Soviet cosmonaut returned to earth after nearly 11 months in orbit above the earth. He was in very good health, which hadn’t always been the case in journeys like this. Five years earlier, after 211 days in space, two cosmonauts were sick for almost a month after they returned from orbit.

So what was the difference? Well, after the earlier cosmonauts returned to earth atrophied and sick after so long in zero gravity, the Soviets invented the “penguin suit,” a running suit laced with elastic bands that resisted every move the wearer made. This forced the cosmonauts to exert strength every time they moved. And it was the resistance that strengthened them.

It can be easy to long for days without difficulty. But God knows that if we’re to become stronger, we must face resistance in our lives. Now, that doesn’t mean we should only long for hard days, but it does mean that the resistance we face has a purpose of making us stronger.

The truth is that an easier life leads to weaker spiritual muscles. But if we’ll face our troubles head on, fully trusting in Christ’s power in us, we’ll grow stronger spiritually and be ready for the next challenge that comes our way.

Pray and ask God to develop your “spiritual muscles” by giving you the resolve to face life’s challenges head on with faith in Him. (Senior Living)

HOW TO KEEP GOING AND GROWING

August 1, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

Having repented and received Christ as our Lord and Savior we are saved–but we are not yet sinless! That day will come because we are “in Christ”, but not until we are “with Christ”. Until then, as greatly as we desire to be like Christ, perfection eludes us. We all fail more than we should. Although we are new creatures in Christ we are far from like Him. We fail many times and in many ways, and there is always a reason.

Sometimes it is because we lag behind the Lord. At other times we impatiently run ahead of Him. And sometimes we actually turn away from the Lord. But in all cases, as different as the details might be, we get away from Him, and that is the cause of our failure–something we need to avoid at all cost. This is cause for serious thought.

Accepting Christ is the only way to salvation (John 14:6) and abiding in Christ is the only way to success (John 15:4-7). He who is our only hope of heaven is also our Helper until we get there, and help is something we all need–all the time. We are so very weak that without Him we can do nothing. That fact ought to humble us. In and of ourselves we have nothing of which to boast. The only good in any person is Christ. And for that we ought to be eternally thankful.

Let us then love Him with all our heart, serve Him with all our strength, glorify Him in all that we do, give to Him all our devotion, trust Him for all our needs, and find our pleasure in pleasing Him. Do these things and you will not fail. In the doing of these things we will be able to keep going and growing regardless of the circumstances.
