PRECIOUS PROMISES

April 21, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Precious promises.” 2 Peter 1:4

The promises of Scriptures are the promises of the great God; they are all of free grace; they are confirmed by the blood of Jesus; and are exceeding great and very precious. They are so plain that a child can understand them; and so great that no angel could fulfil them. There is such a variety that they meet every case; and such a fulness that they include every want. They are breasts of consolation for the poor, tried, and distressed believer; and are the strength and support of every child of God. They are our plea at the throne of grace, our confidence in the hour of trail, and our rejoicing in prospect of death. Beloved, God’s promises are to be your daily comfort: it is for you to search them out, store them up, believe them, trust in them, plead them, and be assured of their fulfilment, because “He is faithful who promised.” The promises are more precious than gold or silver; sweeter than honey or the honey-comb; more lasting than the earth; and more stable than the pillars of heaven. Let us think of them, plead them, and expect their fulfilment today; our God is a faithful God, keeping covenant and mercy unto a thousand generations. (James Smith, 1840)

Praise to the goodness of the Lord,
Who rules His people by His word;
And there as strong as His decrees,
He sets His kindest promises

KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL

April 20, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.”–Luke 2:48–50

President U. S. Grant was noted for having a dry wit and sense of humor. According to an old story, a Scotsman came to the White House to demonstrate the game of golf. Placing the ball on a tee he took a huge swing. Missing the ball completely, he scattered dirt over the president and those standing nearby. He took aim and swung again, but again missed the target. After the sixth failed attempt, Grant supposedly said, “There seems to be a fair amount of exercise in the game, but I fail to see the purpose of the ball.”

If we are not careful, it is easy for us to be very busy without actually accomplishing anything of lasting value. We need to keep our focus on the things that matter the most. One of the most amazing things about the life of Jesus was His ability to keep His focus on fulfilling the will of His Father. This was evident even when He was just twelve years old. He had a sense of compulsion and urgency to “be about my Father’s business.”

We only have a limited number of hours each day, and a limited number of days in which to serve God. That makes it vital that we are doing what matters most. Management guru Peter Drucker pointed out the difference between a focus on doing things right and a focus on doing the right things. We need to make sure that we are spending our time on what matters to God.—Daily in the Word

BLESSED BY BURDENS

January 18, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“ Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved ” Psalm 55:22
We don’t know nearly as much about God as we think we do. This misunderstanding of the Lord can lead to some very serious problems in our lives. So we need to learn as much as we can about Him, which comes from rightly dividing the Word, but then we must simply trust Him–knowing that He does all things well.

J. R. Miller gave this wise counsel:“There are some mistaken notions current concerning the ways in which God would help us. People think that whenever they have a little trouble, a bit of hard path to go over, a load to carry, a sorrow to endure—all they have to do is to call upon God, and He will at once take away their sorrow, or free them from the trouble. But this is not the way God helps us! His purpose of love concerning us is—not to make all things easy for us—but to make something of us!

When we ask God to save us from our trouble, to take the struggles out of our life, to make the paths mossy, to lift off every heavy load—He will not do it! It would be most unloving in Him to accommodate us. We must carry the burden ourselves! All God promises is, to sustain us—as we carry it! He wants us to learn life’s lessons, and to do this—we must be left to work out the problems for ourselves.

There are rich blessings which can be gotten, only in sorrow. It would be short-sighted love indeed—which would heed our cries, and spare us from sorrow—and thus deprive us of the wonderful blessings which can be gotten only in sorrow! God is too good to us to answer our prayers—which would save us from pain, cost, and sacrifice today—at the price of holier, better, truer life in the end. He would not rob us of the blessing that is in the burden—which we can get only by carrying it!“

STAND STILL

April 19, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord” (Exod. 14:13).

These words contain God’s command to the believer when he is reduced to great straits and brought into extraordinary difficulties. He cannot retreat; he cannot go forward; he is shut upon the right hand and on the left. What is he now to do?

The Master’s word to him is “stand still.” It will be well for him if, at such times, he listens only to his Master’s word, for other and evil advisers come with their suggestions. Despair whispers, “Lie down and die; give it all up.” But God would have us put on a cheerful courage, and even in our worst times, rejoice in His love and faithfulness.

Cowardice says, “Retreat; go back to the worldling’s way of action; you cannot play the Christian’s part; it is too difficult. Relinquish your principles.”

But, however much Satan may urge this course upon you, you cannot follow it, if you are a child of God. His Divine fiat has bid thee go from strength to strength, and so thou shalt, and neither death nor hell shall turn thee from thy course. What if for a while thou art called to stand still; yet this is but to renew thy strength for some greater advance in due time.

Precipitancy cries, “Do something; stir yourself; to stand still and wait is sheer idleness.” We must be doing something at once–we must do it, so we think–instead of looking to the Lord, who will not only do something, but will do everything.

Presumption boasts, “If the sea be before you, march into it, and expect a miracle.” But faith listens neither to Presumption, nor to Despair, nor to Cowardice, nor to Precipitancy, but it hears God say, “Stand still,” and immovable as a rock it stands.

“Stand still“–keep the posture of an upright man, ready for action, expecting further orders, cheerfully and patiently awaiting the directing voice; and it will not be long ere God shall say to you, as distinctly as Moses said it to the people of Israel, “Go forward.’—Spurgeon

“Be quiet! why this anxious heed
About thy tangled ways?
God knows them all. He giveth speed
And He allows delays.
‘Tis good for thee to walk by faith
And not by sight.
Take it on trust a little while.
Soon shalt thou read the mystery aright
In the full sunshine of His smile.”

In times of uncertainty, wait. Always, if you have any doubt, wait. Do not force yourself to any action. If you have a restraint in your spirit, wait until all is clear, and do not go against it.

BEYOND THE BASICS

May 27, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

There are those who boast that they read the Bible everyday and read through it at least once a year, some for many years, yet they are woefully ignorant of the great doctrines of the Bible. They have no idea what atonement, justification, sanctification, etc. means, and they don’t seem to care if they ever do. That’s sad.

Although they are familiar with the popular stories of the Bible they have no idea as to their spiritual significance. When it comes to shadows and types they are clueless, and not much better when it comes to parables and prophecies. They enjoy the inspirational aspects of the Bible, but have little interest in instructions. To them the Bible is more like a good-luck charm or a rabbit’s foot. They are quick to affirm their belief that it is God’s Word, but their understanding of it is very limited. If you point out something from the Bible that is contrary to what they believe they usually respond with “That’s just your interpretation”.

If you are one of those I’ve just described, I’m not trying to belittle or embarrass you. I’m thrilled that you are reading your Bible everyday, everyone should, but I want you to see that there is so much more to it than that. The doctrines I’ve mentioned are glorious and should be of interest to all, not just pastors and theologians. These are precious truths that pertain to your relationship with God that will bless your heart beyond measure as you grasp more and more of their meaning. They speak of the person and work of Christ, and are never boring.

Try doing a word study sometime and read all the verses related to it. You will be blessed. Study a particular section of the Bible as though you had to teach it next Sunday and you will be amazed by what you will learn and how you will be helped. Do yourself a favor and start some sort of systematic study of God’s Word. It will not only change your life, it will thrill your soul beyond what you ever imagined.

Seeing that the Bible is God’s revelation to man how can we not be interested? Considering that it has transforming power how can we ignore it? Knowing it deals with the most important issues in life and answers the most perplexing questions in the world, how can we not care? Think about it!
