DESIRING DEATH

August 7, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and sat down under a juniper tree: and requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life-–.1 Kings 19:4

Life is tough and we all long for relief. Sadly, for some the desire for relief is so strong that they take their own life–but that is the cowards way out. Any fool can do that. The real challenge is living, not dying. Suicide is perhaps the most selfish thing you can do. None of us have the right to end our lives. Yet even a great man like Elijah can become so desperate that he, at least for a moment, desires death over life. But there is something better.

J. R. Miller wrote: “He was sorely discouraged. It seemed to him that all he had done, had come to nothing. There are few things we need more to guard against than discouragement. When once we come under its influence, it makes us weak, robbing us of our hope and making cowards of us. Many a life is discrowned and drawn down to failure, through discouragement.

It is surely a sad picture: this greatest of the old prophets lying there under the little bush, in the wilderness, longing to die! If he had died then and there, what an inglorious ending it would have made of his life! As it was, however, he lived to do further glorious work and to see great results from his contest with idolatry. God was kinder to him, than he knew.

It is wrong to wish ourselves dead. Life is God’s gift to us, a sacred trust for which we shall have to give account. While God keeps us living—he has something for us to do. Our prayer should be for grace to do our duty bravely and well unto the end. From Elijah’s after-experience, we learn that we would never be cast down by any discouraging experiences. The things we think have failed are often only slowly ripening into rich success. We have only to be faithful to God and to duty, and we may always rejoice. What seems failure—is often best success.“

UNDERSTANDING UNDERSTANDING

August 6, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

As hard as we might try, we can’t always understand one another. As we listen to people pour out the burdens of their heart, we’re often guilty of saying,”I understand” when we don’t. O we mean well, we want to understand and we try, but we can’t. We are different in nature and needs. We are all different in character and our circumstances are not the same.

Sometimes we are guilty of criticizing others when we would actual do worse were we in their shoes. They fare better than we would were the roles reversed, yet we complain about their short-comings. We need to realize that we can’t always understand the degree of their temptation, the weight of their burden, the extent of their weakness, and the effects of their past. If we could truly understand we might commend them rather than condemn them.

In a thousand years I could not explain to you what it is like to be a pastor. Unless you are a pastor, you don’t have a clue! However, neither can I always understand what it is like being in your shoes. Since that is true, we both need to work at being more understanding regarding things that we don’t understand. Although we can’t understand we can be more understanding, and that would make a tremendous difference in our relationships.

We are all different, imperfect, and in need of help. So,let’s pray for others, and for ourselves—asking God to help us understand that we don’t understand. Since we all fail, it behooves us to be “kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”(Ephesians 4:32). That’s not just good advice, it is a command. HDS

JUST WHEN I NEED HIM MOST

August 5, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray—
And when he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them; and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them
.–Mark 6:46, 48

This story always reminds me of the old song, “Just When I Need Him Most”. Far too many time I have worried needlessly. I should have know better, because He had never failed before. We all would do well to remember this story, and be reminded that Jesus never fails. J. R. Miller gave us this good advice:

“He did not come immediately; indeed, it was almost morning when He came, and the disciples had been struggling all night in the storm. Yet He had not been indifferent to them meanwhile. From the mountainside where He was praying—He kept his eye upon them. “He saw that they were in serious trouble.” All that dark night, He kept a watch upon that little boat that bore His disciples in the midst of the waves.

There is something very suggestive in the picture. This ‘boat in the storm’, is a picture of ‘Christ’s friends in this world, in the storms of life’. Sometimes we think we are forgotten—but from His place in glory, Christ’s eye is always on us! He sees us struggling, battling with the waves, beaten, and distressed. He has full sympathy with us in all our struggles. It ought to be a great strength and comfort to us in trial, to know this. Jesus intercedes for us in our distresses!

It may not be best always to deliver us immediately—but His prayer continually ascends, that our faith may not fail in the struggle. This also should encourage us.

Then, He always comes in time. He may delay long—but it is never too long. If we call upon Him in trouble—we may be sure that He hears and sees us, and knows just how hard it is for us to endure; that He prays for us that we may not fail, and that He will come at the right time for our deliverance!”

PRAISE FIRST

August 4, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me (John11:41)

This is a very strange and unusual order. Lazarus is still in the grave, and the thanksgiving precedes the miracle of resurrection. I thought that the thanksgiving would have risen when the great deed had been wrought, and Lazarus was restored to life again. But Jesus gives thanks for what He is about to receive. The gratitude breaks forth before the bounty has arrived, in the assurance that it is certainly on the way. The song of victory is sung before the battle has been fought. It is the sower who is singing the song of the harvest home. It is thanksgiving before the miracle!

Who thinks of announcing a victory-psalm when the crusaders are just starting out for the field? Where can we hear the grateful song for the answer which has not yet been received?

And after all, there is nothing strange or forced, or unreasonable in the Master’s order. Praise is really the most vital preparatory ministry to the working of the miracles. Miracles are wrought by spiritual power. Spiritual power is always proportioned to our faith.– John Henry Jowett

CONFIDENCE

August 3, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

“Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.”–Proverbs 3:25-26

Many Christians risked and gave their lives opposing the evils of Hitler’s Holocaust. One of the best-known of these was Corrie ten Boom. She and her family saved some eight hundred Jews from death camps by concealing them in the “hiding place” behind the wall in Corrie’s bedroom. Eventually, the ten Boom family was betrayed to the Gestapo. Corrie’s father and sister both died in prison, but Corrie survived and traveled around the world telling a story of faith and courage that has challenged many. She once said, “When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don’t throw away the ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the engineer.”

Dr. Paul Chappell wrote:”Despite what some prominent preachers like to say, God does not promise us that everything is going to go well and things will always turn out the way we think they should. There will be dark times when we cannot see the way forward and don’t know where to go. The truth is, whether I can see the way clearly or not, God can. He revealed this facet of His nature to the prophet Isaiah, describing Himself as, “Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure” (Isaiah 46:10).

Years ago, a son went to his father, disturbed about how the book he was reading would turn out. His favorite character was in jeopardy, and he was afraid. “Don’t worry,” his father advised, “I’ve read the whole book, and it turns out fine.” God is in control of your life, and it will work out according to His plan He hasn’t just read the Book, He wrote it!–No matter how dark your surroundings and circumstances may be, you can have complete faith in God.”
