A LIFE LINE

June 9, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.—Proverbs 4:13

In April of 2011, a line of deadly tornadoes ripped across the state of Alabama, leaving some 250 people dead in its wake. Near Wellington, Alabama, the Hardy family realized the storm was coming too late to find a permanent shelter. They considered trying to take shelter in a metal clubhouse, but it had already been turned on its side by the strong winds. So in desperation, they took shelter in a small stand of trees. They tied a rope around the children and huddled around them in the trees as the storm passed. A family member said that while they had been scratched by flying dirt and debris, none suffered any serious injuries.

Imagine how tightly you would cling to the trees and rope in such a situation. Knowing that your life or the life of your child might depend on your grip would give you all the motivation you needed to hang on with every ounce of power you could muster!

Although there are no warning sirens or news alerts, each of us is living in the path of destructive storms. There are temptations and destructive philosophies abounding around us, and if we do not have a secure place of protection, we will be destroyed.

Because the Word of God is so readily available to us, we often take it for granted rather than treasuring it as the precious resource it is. When you view the Bible as a lifeline designed to keep you safe through the storms of life, you begin to take it more seriously. If you knew the truth you were hearing in church on Sunday was the difference between life and death, you wouldn’t have trouble focusing and listening to the message. If you remembered that your daily time in God’s Word was your lifeline to spiritual strength, you would be less likely to neglect it. Truth is that important, and it deserves our careful attention.—-When we understand how important God’s principle for wise living are, we will cling tightly to them.(Daily In The Word)

THE OBSTACLES OF LIFE

June 7, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

“And I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand. And I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof: and after that he will let you go.”–Exodus 3:19-20

Obstacles are a common part of the human life. Whether it’s at work, at home, in a sporting competition, or any other venture, obstacles will come. The difference between a successful person and one who fails isn’t the presence of obstacles along their path, but their reaction to those obstacles.

The same is true in the Christian life. We will all face obstacles that threaten to derail us from living for Christ, running our race, and accomplishing the task He has set before us. God knows of these obstacles, and rather than simply removing them, He desires that we would turn to Him to help us overcome them.

Moses faced an obstacle in God’s task for him to lead Israel out of Egypt. As seen in our verses, God foretold Moses that Pharaoh wouldn’t release the Israelites easily. Moses could have seen this obstacle and given up, gone back to sheep-herding, and allowed the obstacle to rule his life. But Moses turned to God and trusted Him for help.

Obstacles will come into your Christian life; it’s a fact you can count on. God doesn’t promise the path He has for you will be easy, but He does promise to help you along the way. The devil is a master at causing Christians to feel overwhelmed, discouraged, and doubtful. Have you ever had the devil jump on your shoulder and begin telling you why you couldn’t accomplish something for God, live a faithful life, or continue along God’s path? Don’t listen to him!

Every faithful Christian has faced obstacles in their Christian life. Whether it was Joseph being thrown into a pit then sold into slavery, Moses having to face the ruler of the land, David being threatened by the king, Daniel being captive in a pagan land, or the disciples facing persecution; every Christian has had their share of battles. Yet the ones who remained faithful were those who allowed God to guide them and trusted Him for help in conquering the obstacles.

What obstacle has come into your life? In what area has the devil been telling you that you cannot be faithful? Rather than listening to the devil’s doubts, believe God’s promise that He will help you overcome the obstacles. Like Moses, allow God to stretch out His hand in your life and do many mighty wonders through you.–Daily in the Word

SECOND CHANCES

June 6, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

J. R. Miller wrote, “If we had but one chance in life it would fare badly with most of us. We do scarcely anything perfectly the first time we try to do it. Nearly always do we fail. Not many lives are lived beautifully, without a break or a lapse, from childhood to age. If, therefore, the opportunity of choosing good came to us only once, and was forever withdrawn, few of us would make anything of our life.”

How thankful we ought to be for second chances! We ought to be glad that the Divine Potter doesn’t throw the clay away. Out of loving patience and with unequalled wisdom and skill He takes the marred vessel and makes “it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.”( Jer. 18:4). History is filled with examples of those who recovered from a fall. Not only did they merely recover, the experience enabled them to minister to others in a unique way. They teach us that failure doesn’t have to be fatal, final. or futile.

Remember this—failing doesn’t make you a failure! Everyone fails, but you aren’t a failure until you give up and refuse to obey God. Failure doesn’t have to be final. With God there is always hope, if we but trust Him. Forget the past. Focus on the future possibilities that are sure to come when we come to God in repentance.

THE STRENGTH OF OUR SOURCE

June 5, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

My help cometh from the LORD which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved.–Psalm 121:2-3

While we need to think about the source of our strength, we also need to think about the strength of our source. God has the power to create and control all of creation! Wow! Who can comprehend that. Being able to that, your problem is no problem to God.

The phrase,”He will not suffer thy foot to be moved” isn’t as meaningful to us as it was to folks in those days. We don’t travel much by foot and when we do it is usually on smooth surfaces rather than rugged terrain. In those days and in those places travellers faced many difficult and dangerous situatons, where one slip could result in death.

But, although our circustances are different, we need the same help they needed. As we walk the pathway of life we are in constant danger and continual need of help. We are always liable to fall at any moment unless the Lord helps us. It is only through His power that we can stand fast.

Dear friend, be encouraged today. Walk with the Lord and He will sustain you in every possible situation. He never slumbers or sleeps. He is always alert, aware of your need, and able to help. If He can create and control the sun. moon, and stars He can take care of you. If He cares for the sparrow that falls, He cares much more for His children. The strength of our source assures us that no problem is too big for God.

WISHING FOR WINGS

June 3, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.–Psalm 55:6

Have you ever wished that you could just fly away, just get away from it all? Sure you have, we all have. Even great people like David have felt that way. He wanted to put as much distance as possible between himself and his hardships. He said,”Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. Selah.”(Ps.55:7). However, before his song ended, he regained his equilibrium and said,”Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”(Ps. 55:22)

The Hebrew word translated “burden” means,”lot (that which is given)”, as we say,”Our lot in life”. As you know, life isn’t always fun and easy (see Phil.1:29), and we might wish for wings so we could escape, but God is able to sustain us. He even uses these trials like wings, encouraging us and enabling us to fly to Him for relief. Instead of being crushed by the heavy load of our burden, our burdens give us wings which carry us to God where we find the sweet relief we’ve been looking for.

As Miss Mary Butterfield wrote many long years ago: Oh, paradox of Heaven. The load We think will crush was sent to lift us Up to God! Then, soul of mine, Climb up! for naught can e’er be crushed Save what is underneath the weight. How may we climb! By what ascent Shall we surmount the carping cares Of life! Within His word is found The key which opens His secret stairs; Alone with Christ, secluded there, We mount our loads, and rest in Him.
