CHOOSING TO FEAR GOD

June 2, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:—Proverbs 1:29

A reporter saw Jim Taylor, star running back on the Green Bay Packers football team standing in the team’s hotel lobby more than 45 minutes before the bus was scheduled to take the team to the stadium for a playoff game. “Why are you here so early, Jim?” he asked. “I don’t want to get left at the hotel,” the Hall of Fame running back answered. The Packers were coached by Vince Lombardi, and soon after his arrival in Green Bay, he instituted a schedule that came to be known as “Lombardi Time.” He would announce the start of a practice or the departure time for an event, only to begin early—leaving those who showed up “on time” behind or critiquing them for being late.

The essence of Lombardi Time is that if you were not fifteen minutes “early” you were late. In honor of the famed coach, the clock at Lambeau Field that faces Lombardi Avenue is still set fifteen minutes ahead! Lombardi was known as a fierce disciplinarian, and his players were expected to comply with his rules without question or argument. Despite his great talent, Jim Taylor was more afraid of disappointing his coach than of almost anything else.

Many people in our society today view God casually. This is not just true in the world, but sadly this attitude has infected the church as well. Despite this tide of neglect of the character and nature of God, we must make another choice—to swim against the current and maintain our fear of the Lord in recognition of His holiness. When Isaiah saw a glimpse of God’s throne in Heaven he said, “Woe is me! for I am undone…for mine eyes have seen the King” (Isaiah 6:5). Make it your choice to maintain a holy fear of God.

Make the choice to fear God and you will be protected from many dangers.–From “Daily in the Word”

NOT BY BREAD ALONE

June 1, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God– Matthew 4:4

We have to eat to live. Yet, Jesus reminds us (and Satan), food is not all that is needed. You could have all the food in the world and yet remain empty and lifeless.

The one thing that truly energizes and fills and sustains is the Word of God. With God’s Word as your constant companion and sustenance, you can be content even when other food is withheld, just like Jesus was after fasting for 40 days.

But notice that we are to live by every word that proceeds from God’s mouth, not just our pet passages or favorite verses. There is not a word in God’s Word that we do not need, that we cannot profit from. God’s Word is a well-rounded meal and we are not meant to leave any part of it out.

Do you agree with Jesus? Do you see that consuming everything this world has to offer would still leave you empty, and yet each word of God is able to build you up and strengthen you for life’s journey?

If you agree with Jesus, do you live like Jesus? Do you forgo Satan’s temptation to find fulfillment in earth-bound pleasures, in order to enjoy the far greater pleasure of communion with God?

Are you living on bread alone, or by every word of God’s Word? (A Good Thing)

IT’S GETTING DARK

May 31, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you-—John 12:35

Darkness can sometimes be delightful. The work is over, the family is gathered, and it’s time to rest and recover. Times like that are of greater value than gold. But, darkness can also be dreadful, and that’s what our Lord refers to here. He warns us–“lest darkness come upon you”. It is a picture of being overtaken–such as a beast that would spring upon you and devour you. There is a darkness that likewise robs you of life itself.

In this simple, yet serious, statement we find a lesson for all. Regardless of what stage or season of life we find ourselves in, duty calls, and we are to capitalize on the golden opportunities set before us before it is too late.

For those who are young, this is the time for education, preparation, and the formation of relationships–some of which will last a lifetime. Do not believe the lie that says you will always have tomorrow. Today is your day, perhaps your last day. Waste not your opportunities!

For those in their prime, you’ve heard the old saying, “Strike while the iron is hot”–well, now is the time! Your mind is sharp, your body is strong, and your eyes are keen, but the night cometh. Use it or lose it.

For those who have reached old age. The sun might be setting, but the day isn’t over—yet. Don’t be reduced to the status of a “Has-been”. The very fact that you are still here tells you that the sun hasn’t set–there is still a work for you to do.

Whatever your age, the watchword is “Now!”. Today is the time. The clock is ticking. The sun is setting and darkness is coming–“Walk”! Despise no duty. Waste no time. Ignore no opportunity. As someone said:
“Never comes the opportunity that passed;
That one moment–was its last”

HIM

May 30, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

There was an elderly lady who, for 90 years, claimed 2 Timothy 1:12 as her life verse. She quoted it every morning in the old King James, “…for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed to him against that day.”

In her later years, however, the woman began to lose her memory and could only quote parts of the verse. Finally on her deathbed, she was heard to say over and over again the only part she could remember. In a barely audible voice she said, “Him… Him… Him.” And that single word was enough to sustain and strengthen her all the way to heaven.

When it comes down to it, isn’t that what it’s really all about? Scripture… salvation… holy living… it’s really all about Him! And while our bodies will fail and our minds will lose their acuity, He will always remain the focus of our praise.

All you need is Jesus. Don’t let counting how much time you’re spending reading the Bible take your focus off of Him. In the good and the bad times of life, whether the Lord gives or takes away, remember Him… Him… Him.(PowerPoint)

KEEP JESUS AS THE SINGLE FOCUS OF YOUR LIFE AND GOD WILL SUSTAIN YOU WHATEVER COMES YOUR WAY.

ARE YOU A STUDENT?

May 29, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

“A wise man will hear, and increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels.”–Proverbs 1:5

If the truth be known, you know very few people who are true students of the Bible. Even many who attend Sunday School do not fit into that category. Most church members would rather read what someone wrote about the Bible than to read the Bible itself. Now, I’m not against reading good books, commentaries, and dictionaries, etc., but none of these can take the place of the Bible.

Some people read daily devotionals and books from the latest best-sellers list, but they don’t spend five minutes a day reading God’s Word. And, out of those who do read the Bible regularly only a very few really study it. It’s no wonder that they are spiritually malnourished, weak and susceptible to sin. They are starving themselves. They feed on junk food rather than the milk and meat of the Word. Listen—-serious Bible study is not just for preachers and teachers, it is the duty and should be the delight of every Christian. You will never become the person God wants you to be without it.

We have only so much time—don’t use all your time studying resources about the Bible, study the Bible itself. J. I. Packer said, “If I were the devil, one of my first aims would be to stop folk from digging into the Bible.” Sadly that is exactly what he has done in the lives of many and, oddly enough he has even used “Christian literature” to do it.

“The treasures of the Word of God
are great beyond compare;
But if we do not search them out,
We cannot use what’s there.”
