TIDINGS OF GREAT JOY

December 24, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

“And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.” – Luke 2:10

The angel said that we have received “good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.” God wants this message known around the world.

Now I know that you may not be a preacher, but you can be a “reach-er”! What would happen if every believer went out into their neighborhood and said, “Jesus is Lord!” How will the world know if we don’t tell them? Oh, we need to be bold for Jesus.

The skies are going to split open, and the trumpet is going to sound. The dead in Christ will rise, and the angels will once again be heard! “He’s returned!” The Savior born in a manger will return as a Monarch to rule and to reign!

Are you joyfully sharing the Good News of Christ this Christmas? Will you be bold and share His Good News with someone today?(Adrian Rogers)

HE CAME

December 23, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

“He came–” (John 1:11)
Searching for illustrations concerning Christmas, I came across the following story:   A striking Christmas card was once published with the title “If Christ Had Not Come”. It was founded upon our Savior’s words “If I had not come.” The card represented a pastor falling into a short sleep in his study on Christmas morning and dreaming of a world into which Jesus had never come.
In his dream he found himself looking through his home, but there were no little stockings in the chimney corner, no Christmas bells or wreaths of holly, and no Christ to comfort, gladden and save. He walked out to the street, but there was no church with its spire pointing to Heaven. He came back and sat down in his library, but every book about the Savior had disappeared.
The doorbell rang and a messenger asked the preacher to visit his poor, dying mother. He hastened with the weeping child, and as he reached the home he sat down and said, “I have something here that will comfort you.”  He opened his Bible to look for a familiar promise, but it ended with Malachi. There was no Gospel and no promise of hope and salvation, and he could only bow his head and weep with her in bitter despair.
Two days later he stood beside her coffin and conducted the funeral service. There was no message of consolation, no hope of heaven.
Thank God “He came”! And His coming has brought help and hope for all those who trust Him! Have you received Him?

GOD’S UNSPEAKABLE GIFT

December 22, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.–2 Cor. 9:15

There are some things that simply cannot be put into words. How do you describe the beauty of a sunset or loveliness of a baby’s face. When we try to picture such things words just get in the way. The same is true when it comes to the birth of Christ. The greatest orators are not able to describe the wonder of the Son of God becoming the Son of man. But although we cannot explain it we can enjoy it, and we ought to think much about it. Charles Spurgeon wrote:

Christ is unspeakable in his condescension.
Can any one measure or describe how far Christ stooped,
when, from the throne of splendor, he came to a manger
to be swaddled and lie where the horned oxen fed.
Oh, what a stoop of condescension was that!
The Infinite becomes an infant!

The Eternal is dandled on a woman’s knee.
He is there in the carpenter’s shop, obedient to his
parents; there in poverty, crying, “The Son of man has not
where to lay his head;” and there, in thirst, asking of a
guilty woman a drink of water.
It is unspeakable!

That he, before whom all the hosts of heaven veiled their
faces, should come here among men, and among the
poorest of the poor- that he who dwelt amidst the glory
and the bliss of the land of light, should condescend to be
a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief, passes
human thought!

Such a Savior is a gift unspeakable.

FULL CIRCLE

December 21, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world; again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.–John 16:28

The life of Jesus is a perfect circle of symmetry. His conception and birth brought Him into the world. His resurrection and ascension took Him out of the world. At the beginning of life, He was conceived in a womb from which never a child had been born. At the end of life, He was placed in a tomb in which never a man had been laid. In this virgin womb, He was hidden for nine months; in the virgin tomb, for three days.

He left Mary’s womb with a baby’s cry and Joseph’s tomb with a victor’s shout. He was born to give us a life that’s forgiven, and raised to give us a life that’s forever. His body was sown perishable, but was raised imperishable. It was sown in dishonor but was raised in glory. It was sown in weakness but raised in power.

Because of His sacrifice, we can claim the words of the hymnist as our own: “Living, He loved me; dying He saved me; buried He carried my sins far away; rising He justified freely forever; one day He’s coming — O glorious day” (Wilber Chapman, 1908).–From Turning Point

A MERRY HEART

December 20, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”(Proverbs 17:22)

Isn’t it strange—one person says Christmas is “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, while many others can’t wait until it’s over? I am amazed that so many people fuss and complain about petty little issues associated with Christmas, when they should be rejoicing that Christ has come. If you’re one of those who are irritated by the “Christmas rush” maybe the following story will help you see things from a better perspective:

One Christmas Eve, as late Christmas shoppers hurried along the street, a crippled newsboy stood on his crutches offering his papers to the passersby. He looked happy, and his crutches were decorated with evergreens.

One man greeted him with a cheerful smile, “My boy, you surely have the Christmas spirit.”

The boy replied “What’s the use of putting on a sour face? Sure, I am poor and lame, but that’s no reason for looking glum. I won’t get presents like other boys at Christmas, but I can have fun, too. So I decorated my crutches just to make them seem special for Christmas.”

If we go out to seek joy, it will elude us. If we go out to impart joy, we will find it. This Christmas, whether you have little or much, it makes no difference. It is your attitude that counts. As Christians we are duty bound to rejoice in Christ, regardless of the circumstances, so let us use this occasion to exalt His glorious name. Because of Him, every day can be the “Most Wonderful Time of the Year”.
