And He that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new– Revelation 21:5.
Do you ever get tired of things not being as should? Sure you do. We all long for change. Every Christian grows weary of the sin, selfishness, and suffering to which we are exposed in this fallen world. Sometimes it seems that change for the better will never come—but we are wrong. Our blessed Lord will make all things new and perfect. Charles Spurgeon said it well:
“Glory be to His name! All things need making new, for they are sadly battered and worn by sin. It is time that the old vesture was rolled up and laid aside, and that creation put on her Sunday suit. But no one else can make all things new except the LORD who made them at the first; for it needs as much power to make out of evil as to make out of nothing. Our LORD Jesus has undertaken the task, and He is fully competent for the performance of it. Already he has commenced His labor, and for centuries He has persevered in making new the hearts of men and the order of society. By and by He will make new the whole constitution of human government, and human nature shall be changed by His grace; and there shall come a day when the body shall be made new and raised like unto His glorious body. What a joy to belong to a kingdom in which everything is being made new by the power of its King! We are not dying out: we are hastening on to a more glorious life. Despite the opposition of the powers of evil, our glorious LORD Jesus is accomplishing His purpose and making us, and all things about us, “new” and as full of beauty as when they first came from the hand of the LORD.”
THE TIME ISS SHORT
—-the time is short—1 Cor. 7:29
The word “time” means “opportunity, due measure, seasonable, a limited period of time”. It speaks about an opportunity to do what needs to be done. While much could be said about what needs to be done, I want you to think about why the time is short. Time is short because of—
1. Cessation of life. You are going to die! You might at this moment be young and strong and death might seem many long years away. But death can leap on you faster than a crouching lion attacks its prey. It can sweep you away quicker than a F5 tornado can blow away an outhouse. You are going to die. maybe much sooner than you imagine. Your present opportunities will not last forever.
2. Capacity diminishing. One of the glories of youth is physical strength, but that can be gone overnight. An accident or an illness can leave you as weak as a kitten and unable to do the things that once were easy. Of course it might not happen that fast, but it will happen. The day might come when’ regardless of how much you want to do something you won’t be able to do it. It might be physical, or mental, or emotional, but eventually your capacity will diminish and your ability will be limited. You might have a desire to attend church and serve God, but not have the ability to do so— better do it now!
3. Circumstances changing. You don’t have to die or find yourself with diminished capacity before your opportunity is gone. 1001 things can happen that will leave you unable to do what you once could and should have done. Perhaps you have a neighbor, co-worker, classmate, or friend that is unsaved and in need of hearing the gospel. Today you could witness to them, tomorrow they might move or be indisposed. Although death delays and strength stays your opportunity could be gone forever, in a heartbeat.
4. Christ returning. The very last thing Jesus said in the Bible was, ” Surely I come quickly”(Rev. 22:20). Although we know not the day or the hour we know without a doubt that He will come again–He cannot lie. He might come today! Although that will be glory for the believer it will spell the end of our opportunity for service. He could come today. He might come tomorrow. He will come sometime! Then the night will have come when no man can work. We will have had our last opportunity. Think about it!
THE LEANING SIDE
Every time I am asked to pray, I think of the old deacon who always prayed,
Lord, prop us up on our leanin’ side. After hearing him pray that prayer
many times, someone asked him why he prayed that prayer so fervently.
He answered, ‘Well sir, you see, it’s like this . . . I got an old barn out
back. It’s been there a long time, it’s withstood a lot of weather, it’s
gone through a lot of storms, and it’s stood for many years. It’s still
standing, but one day I noticed it was leaning to one side a bit. So I went
and got some pine poles and propped it up on its leaning side so it wouldn’t
fall.
Then I got to thinking ’bout that and how much I was like that old barn. I
been around a long time, I’ve withstood a lot of life’s storms, I’ve
withstood a lot of bad weather in life, I’ve withstood a lot of hard times,
And I’m still standing too. But I find myself leaning to one side from time
to time, so I like to ask the Lord to prop us up on our leaning side, ’cause
I figure a lot of us get to leaning, at times. Sometime we get to leaning
toward anger, leaning toward bitterness, leaning toward hatred, leaning
toward cussing, leaning toward a lot of things that we shouldn’t, so we need
to pray, ‘Lord, prop us up on our leaning side,’ so we will stand straight
and tall again, to glorify the Lord.–Author unknown
AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS
Mankind has two huge problems—thinking far less than he should of Christ and thinking much too much of himself. Until we think as we should about both we will never understand our nature and need of God. John Stott helps us with these wise words:
Every time we look a the cross Christ seems to say to us, ‘I am here because of you. It is your sin I am bearing, your curse I am suffering, your debt I am paying, your death I am dying.’ Nothing in history or in the universe cuts us down to size like the cross. All of us have inflated views of ourselves, especially in self-righteousness, until we have visited a place called Calvary. It is there, at the foot of the cross, that we shrink to our true size.
