THE RNC

August 31, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

As I’ve been watching the RNC and listening to the speeches I can’t help but wonder,“Who is listening?”. I’m not an expert on anything and I’ve been wrong about many things, but in my opinion the upcoming presidential election could be the most important  one in our history.I owe it to my people, my family, my country, and myself to speak up about this. I refuse to take the cowards way out and cut-and- run rather than facing the issue. I am not going to pander to the crowd who thinks I ought to be “politically correct”. I’m not trying to win friends and influence people. The cause is simply too great for us to remain silent.

Knowing how divided our country is, I have often wondered if Obama can be defeated. If the election outcome was based on logic and reason there would be nothing to worry about because on that basis there is no way Obama could win, but we all know that there are other factors in play. So, I admit, I have been viewing the upcoming election with doubt and fear. However, I have been encouraged by watching the RNC. It has revived my spirits and given me reason to hope—hope that the outcome will be better than I first suspected. I like what I’ve heard.

I truly believe that anyone who listened to these speeches could have been helped by them. But that’s the issue isn’t it—“who is listening?”, Are you? I have been enlightened and encouraged by what I’ve heard, but many who could and would have been helped have not heard. That’s sad. Many are like those who say,”My mind is made up, don’t confuse me with the facts”. Others simply have not seen the need of listening or they are so busy doing other things they don’t take time to listen.

So, again I say, “I can’t help but wonder, ‘Who is listening’?” If you haven’t been tuned in, I want to encourage you to find out what was said. It’s not that hard. Anyone with a computer, a smart phone, or iPad, etc. can easily find the transcripts or video’s on line. I urge you to do just that. Don’t just sit back wondering what’s going on and end up wondering “What happened?”. Find the facts, use commonsense, consider what is at stake, and vote. If we all do that everything will turn out just fine.

MY HELPER

November 7, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“The Lord is my helper.” – Hebrews 13:6

This is a very encouraging view of the Most High God: He is the helper of His people, and therefore it is that they are more than conquerors.

Beloved, let us remember this, when called to perform self-denying duties, or to pass through great and sore troubles. We can do nothing right, apart from God; but we can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth us. He will help us in every distress, bring us out of every trouble, lead us through the world with honour, and land us safe on the shores of the heavenly Canaan; all this is promised to every one that trust in Him, waits for Him, walks with Him, and aim habitually to glorify Him.

What sweet encouragement is this; we have an omnipotent Helper, God in the person of His Son is our Deliverer: let us come up out of the wilderness leaning on our Beloved. Let us not grieve His love, or dishonour His grace.

Let us keep a clear conscience, maintain a holy walk, exercise simple faith on our covenant God, and then we may boldly say, “THE LORD IS MY HELPER, I will not fear what man may do unto me.”

To look to Jesus as He rose,
Confirms my faith, disarm my foes;
Exalted on His glorious throne,
I see Him make my cause His own;
Then all my anxious cares subside,
For Jesus lives and will provide.  –James Smith, 1840

THE SERVICE YOU NEED MOST

August 30, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

I was just thinking the other day about how I have been blessed by certain sermons and services. I love to hear good preaching. Not only do I enjoy it, I am helped by it also. Of course some sermons help me more than others. I’ve heard many sermons I enjoyed, but I couldn’t say they actually helped me. And I’ve heard some sermons that were both enjoyable and helpful. But I’ve heard some that I didn’t really enjoy, but they helped me immensely. Looking back, I am so glad I didn’t miss them!

Depending on a person’s circumstances there are times when certain sermons are greatly needed. Yet, after many years of observation,I’ve noticed that some people miss the very sermons they need most. That’s why faithfulness in church attendance is so very important. The service you miss might be the one you need the most. Notice that I said “service”. It’s not just the content of the message that impacts us. Every service has a certain spirit or atmosphere that is unique. In other words, even if you read a transcript of the sermon you would not capture the spirit and power of the service. You need to be there when it’s happening!

Although most of them are now in heaven, there are still a few “old-timers” who can remember the great “Preacher Fellowship” meetings we had in Tennessee, Kentucky, and southern Ohio and Indiana. Wow–those were the days! It’s impossible to duplicate those experiences. You could say that each one was a once in a lifetime experience.I tear up just thinking about how they blessed my soul. I know of nothing like it taking place today. However, while we can’t re-live the past we can make some memories by taking advantage of the opportunities we have.

It’s a big mistake to assume that you don’t need a certain service and treat it as though it will have  nothing worthy of your attention by staying away from it.I’m afraid that many have developed some bad habits, one of which is to not attend certain services. I realize that sometimes there are certain circumstances beyond our control that prevent us from being present in all the services. It’s not my intent to embarrass or falsely accuse people in that situation of being unconcerned. I do, however, think they are the exception rather than the rule. In most cases the absentees aren’t there because they simply don’t want to be there. And it’s amazing how often they miss the very thing they need most—and never even know it. My advice is, don’t take a chance. If you are present you won’t miss anything.

Just this last week we had a guest (we don’t use the word “visitor”) family in our evening service. After a few kind words about how much they enjoyed the service, they told me they had been searching long and hard to find a church that still had Sunday night services. They were thrilled to discover that we did. They seemed even more surprised and pleased when I told them we also have a mid-week service on Wednesday night. It’s sad that anyone would find this unusual, but that’s the way it is today. I’m proud of the fact that we are one of the few remaining churches in our area that still has evening services on Sunday and Wednesday. I can’t help but wonder why anyone would want to be a member of a church that doesn’t.

However, I am troubled by the fact that not all our members see the need for attending all our services. I just don’t understand it. What better thing could yo do? What could possibly be more thrilling and more helpful? When you love people it breaks your heart to see them deprived of God’s blessings. I refuse to sit idly by and watch it happen without sounding out a word of warning. The very thing you need most might be found in the very next church service, but you will never know unless you are there. We would all be wise to consider the words of Hebrews 10:25 “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more as ye see the day approaching”. Even if the service was of no benefit to you personally, the needs of others ought to compel you to be present. It’s not just about what you can get, but also about what you can give. Think about it!

DISAGREEING WITH GOD

November 6, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.“–Isa. 55:8-9

I confess–I don’t always understand God. Any man who says he does is dangerous–don’t trust him! What I do understand is that God either causes or allows everything that happens and that He does all things well. He makes no mistakes and owns no one an apology. Still, there are some things that makes no sense to me. If I depended on my power to reason I would have to say that God and I do not agree on some things. And this is in no way a criticism of God.

While I could write a book discussing examples It isn’t necessary. We all have a list of things regarding how our thoughts conflict with God’s. We should actually expect that. If God was no different than us there would be no reason for us to think highly of Him, obey Him, or trust Him. We would be justified in making a god of ourselves– exactly what some foolish folks have done.

This subject is much more serious than most imagine. It is in fact foundational to everything. One of our biggest problems is that we depend entirely too much on ourselves, and we resent it when we are confronted with opposing views. Were they totally honest many would have to admit that they believe the world would be better, if not perfect, if they had the power to change and control everything. We all tend to think we are right, or we would think differently. Now that might not be so terrible if you just compared yourself to others, but when you feel that way regarding God you are in serious trouble. There is no comparison between you and God. He is in a class all by Himself. His perfect knowledge, infinite wisdom, mighty power and unconditional love make Him one of a kind. He is unlike anyone else and superior to everyone else. This is the God we don’t understand, but desperately need to know!

To have a relationship with God we must depend upon a revelation from God, and we find that revelation in the Bible. While we could know about God without the Bible we could never know Him. Apart from the Scripture our knowledge of God is very limited. We could look at creation and conclude that there must be a “Higher power”– a skillful designer and a powerful creator, but we need more information than that. Thankfully we find what we need in the Bible. This should be a constant reminder that when our thoughts clash with God’s we must consult His Word to find the truth, and the truth is that God doesn’t always explain Himself– and that should be okay with us.

Although we cannot always understand God we can and should trust Him. We can depend upon Him. As Spurgeon said, “When you can’t trace His hand, trust His heart”. That’s good advice! So, here’s the bottom line — if we are doing God’s will we don’t need to know anymore than what He is willing to reveal to us. To know more would be counter-productive. It is for that reason that our thoughts and ways should be like God’s to the greatest degree as possible. For that to happen, to have “the mind of Christ”, we must simply believe what God says, behave accordingly, and leave it at that. I don’t always understand God’s ways, but I trust Him, love Him, and serve Him. I need do no more than that! Neither do you. Stop worrying about the things you don’t understand and start enjoying what God has revealed. That will make a world of difference in your outlook on life.

HATE & INTOLERANCE

August 28, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

I started to begin this article by saying,”I’m shocked at the hatred and intolerance of the liberals”, but then I realized that would be a lie—I’ve known how they feel for a long time.  The motivation for this article comes from some comments regarding hurricane Isaac. Actor, Samuel L. Jackson said, in language that I can’t repeat, that it was unfair that the GOP convention was spared from the hurricane and that he was “not understanding God’s plan”.

Actress Ellen Barkin was even more blunt. She said,in part,”C’mon Isaac! Wash every pro-life—gay-bashing, racist SOB right into the ocean!—the RNC”. Why is it that we Christians get accused of being intolerant when they libs and unbelievers are the most intolerant of all? If anyone has a right to cry “Foul” it’s us. They are wishing for people to be drown.

Their filthy rants and death wishes don’t surprise me. I expect that from the Hollywood crowd and liberal politicians, etc. What amazes me is the attitude of people who support those people—-O wait–that doesn’t amaze me either! They have a long track record of hateful intolerance. They are the ones who made these people popular and put them in office. They’re the tree that produced the fruit–rotten as it is.

So I guess I’m not shocked by anything about this (Maybe just a bit that the hurricane hits the same place on the anniversary of Katrina –but that’s another matter and entirely God’s business). But I am brokenhearted to think that a large portion of our population is in their camp. Our beloved nation is in deep trouble, and if good people sit back and do nothing we are doomed.

The up-coming election is a line drawn in the sand and many have their feet planted firmly on both sides and nothing will move them. Even logic and reason won’t persuade some people. The only people we are able to reach those who are standing aside and looking at the line. There are a large number of nice sweet people who just don’t know what to do or if they should even do anything other than just watch the world go by. If we sound the alarm, engage them in conversation, converse with a sweet spirit and keep at it, we can reach some of them. God forbid that we do anything less! This could possibly be a last chance opportunity to turn the tide. Think about it!
