DON’T FORGET TO REMEMBER

September 11, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

Certain days are forever etched in our minds-days such as 9-11. That tragic event reminds us that we have enemies, perhaps more than any nation on earth. Why? America is the most tolerant, kind, and generous nation in the world yet we are hated. Why do so many want to see our demise? We could talk about that for a long time, discussing various theories, and that might be profitable. But there’s another, more pressing issue that needs to be addressed.

Our worst enemy and greatest threat comes from within. Certain American citizens, some in high places, want to destroy the America we know and love. While the very mention of the word “America” brings certain good thoughts and warm feelings to us, others think differently. They are repulsed by the very things we love about America. And they are working feverishly to destroy the things we hold dear. What I say next might sound very gloomy and depressing, but don’t stop reading–look at the big picture.

There is a new world order coming. We can hate it and fight against it, but we can’t stop it. Things are headed toward what some call “a one world government”. Every student of the Bible knows it will happen–it’s just a matter of time. In the meantime we must decide what we will do, how we will spend our time and energy. To what cause we will devote ourselves? Shall we dedicate ourselves, to the neglect of all else, to the saving of our country, ditch the whole idea and just eat, drink and be merry, or give ourselves to some other pursuit?

It is well and good that we speak out against evil and the things that would destroy us, but there is something else of even greater importance. We must speak-up for Christ, carry out the great Commission. In other words, serving is more important than surviving. We are not under orders to save the union, nor even to spare our lives, but we are commanded to share the gospel. And here’s the thing–we have to do this in the face of perilous times. By that I mean that we must endure the hardships that come as a result of standing for God and country and declare God’s Word at the same time. That’s difficult. Fulfilling the Great Commission is hard in the best of times and under ideal conditions, but it is much more difficult under adverse circumstances. It’s not so hard to talk to someone about the Lord when people are peaceable, but it gets really difficult when you know you will be hated and persecuted for doing so. That weeds the men out from the boys. It’s a tough assignment, yet we are not excused from duty just because it is difficult.

We in America have been greatly blessed. So far we haven’t had to worry much about persecution, but times are changing and they’re changing fast. For the most part Christians have not had to face the decision to “obey God rather than man”. We have been protected by our founding documents: the Declaration of Independence, the U. S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, but now our enemies are at work trying to change them.

So as we reflect on that horrible tragedy of 9-11 let us be reminded of the dangers we face and the need to be ever vigilant, lest our enemies, with-in or with-out, prevail over us. We ought to thank God that there has not been a repeat of that dreadful day, but also remain cautious. Most of all, we need to realize that our greatest security comes from a right relationship with God. We are engaged in a spiritual warfare and able to prevail only by being a righteous people. And we can’t say we haven’t been warned! “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people”.(Proverbs 14:34; “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God”(Psalm 9:17). So as we remember that dreadful day eleven years ago let us not forget that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble”(Psalm 46:1).Think about it!

AN INTERESTING INVITATION

November 12, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool“– Isaiah 1:18

This verse is a parenthesis in the midst of Isaiah’s prophecy of rebuke and warning.

We might have expected for Isaiah to speak of how justified God’s judgment would be because of Israel’s sinful rebellion. But he also surprises us with this reasoning from the Lord: “if you turn to God in repentance, then all your past mistakes (sins) will be utterly washed away.”

This does not at first sound reasonable, or rational, at all. We all know that an apology cannot undo a wrong that has been committed. Saying one is sorry for adultery or murder does not undo the unfaithfulness or loss. So how then does repentance somehow make our red-handed sins clean and white before God?

The answer, the rationale, from the Lord is found later in this same prophecy. A suffering Servant would come, who would be “wounded for our transgressions;” our chastisement, our punishment would be put upon him, and with his wounds he would heal us, clean us (53:5).

You see, there is nothing you can do to take away your past sins and guiltiness before a holy God. But God has promised, when you turn to him in repentance, that your sin-stains will be washed completely away by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Come now, says the Lord, to hear and consider this promise of forgiveness. Do not distance yourself, but come; do not delay, but come now.(Baptist Bible Hour)

NOTHING CHANGED

September 6, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

“No”, I didn’t watch Clinton’s speech at the DNC. I did however read some of the reviews from the mainstream media, and it was just what I expected. But,regardless of the halo they placed on his head nothing has changed.

Clinton’s character isn’t any different than it was before. I can’t help but wonder how he can speak about mistreating women. I still believe that what a man is speaks louder than what he says. Sorry Willie, you haven’t earned the right to be heard. It is a shame that a morally depraved disgraced (impeached) man is given such a platform. It is sickening.

Obama’s record hasn’t changed. Even Slick Willie can’t change the flawed plans and failed policies of the Obama administration. We are even more mired in the mess that is dragging us down than ever before. He had his chance and blew it. It would be insane to put him back in office.

The Democratic Party isn’t any different than before. Neither their past record nor their present agenda has changed. The debt is still climbing, babies are still being murdered, the family institution is still being threatened, the borders are still open, etc. I suspect the only thing Clinton did was to make some of the Dems wish he was their candidate rather than Obama –it might be that’s what he wanted to do–a 50 minute speech, really?

So after all was said and done more was said than done—that’s life as a politician! We’re right where we were. No words from any past president can change the fact that Obama is a failure. If you really believe our nation is better off than it was four years ago you will vote for Obama regardless of what anyone says. Some know better and they won’t be fooled again. I just hope there are enough of them to stop the the train wreck before it happens. Think about it!

REMEMBERING THOSE WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE

November 11, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.”–Hebrews 11:39–40

On November 19, 1863, four months after the decisive Union victory at the Battle of Gettysburg, Abraham Lincoln traveled to Pennsylvania to take part in the ceremony. He dedicated a cemetery there for those who had fallen in battle. In his famed Gettysburg Address, Lincoln said, “We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate—we can not consecrate—we can not hallow—this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.”

Today on Veteran’s Day we honor sacrifices made for the cause of freedom, and it is right that we do so. But we must never forget that as Christians we have an even more wonderful heritage of faith. Through the centuries men and women have stood for what was right regardless of the consequences. Many even gave their lives for their faith rather than deny the Lord. This is our inheritance as Christians. As we walk in the footsteps of Jesus, we are also following the footsteps of those who now are in Heaven as part of the great cloud of witnesses.

Lincoln went on to say, “It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.” In the same way, you and I must take up the cross and complete our journey of faith until we see Jesus.–Paul Chappell

HOW POLITICS WORK

September 5, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

Okay, I think I’ve finally figured out how politics work. If a party can gain votes by leaning left there it goes, but if more votes can be gained by leaning right it leans in that direction. If all thing are equal it just stays in the middle of the road (where the yellow stripes and dead skunks are found). If the majority of the people favor abortion the party endorses it, if not they condemn it. If the party can gain money and votes by endorsing the “gay” lifestyle that’s what it does. You get the picture– political parties sail whichever way the wind is blowing. So if not making mention of God will gain votes they dis-own God–not that He ever mattered anyway, He was just a vote getter as long as having Him in your corner mattered. As soon as He becomes unpopular enough to affect the votes He is kicked off the team.

For the most part political parties are but a reflection of a sizable chunk of the voting population. In case you haven’t noticed our country is almost evenly divided and that’s why we have only two parties. Both are representative of their part of the population, their voting block. There is no room for a third party in our present state.Pick an issue and you will notice that our nation is divided within a few percentage points of a 50/50 split, so we live in a constant state of conflict and the hatred one for the other seems to deepen every day. Regardless of where we are about half of the people want it to be otherwise.

Occasionally a leader comes along who is strong enough to tilt his party in a good direction, such as Reagan, and we prosper. And occasionally a strong personality comes along who is persuasive enough to take his party to an extreme in the other direction( who comes to your mind?) and things go south. So we bounce back and forth. But eventually someone is going to gain enough power to take us over the cliff. Seems to me that we’re right on the edge right now.

Have you ever stood near the edge on a high place and felt your toes curl and your feet tingle—scared half to death and yet possessed with a feeling that you ought to jump? Nope, I can’t explain it any better than that. It’s a weird feeling.Oh, oh I starting to feel it.
