GRIEF

November 10, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

John Newton is best known for writing “Amazing Grace”, but he wrote much more than that. The following is taken from the “Letters of John Newton”:

My dear Madam,
There is something fascinating in GRIEF. As painful as it is, we are prone to indulge it, and to brood over the thoughts and circumstances which are suited (like fuel to fire) to heighten and prolong it!

When the Lord afflicts–it is His design that we should grieve; but in this, as in all other things–there is a certain moderation which befits a Christian, and which only grace can teach. And grace teaches us, not by books or by hearsay–but by experimental lessons. All beyond this, should be avoided and guarded against as sinful and hurtful.

GRIEF, when indulged and excessive . . .
  preys upon the spirits,
  injures health,
  indisposes us for duty, and
causes us to shed tears which deserve more tears.

This is a weeping world. Sin has filled it with thorns and briars, with crosses and calamities. This poor world is a great hospital, resounding with groans in every quarter. It is as a field of battle, where many are falling around us continually! It is more astonishing that we escape so well–than that we are sometimes wounded. We must have some share of grief; it is the unavoidable lot of our nature and state; it is likewise needful in point of discipline. The Lord will certainly chasten those whom He loves, though others may seem to pass for a time with impunity. That is a sweet, instructive, and important passage,

“ And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth , and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth . If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.  Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence : shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live ? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure ; but he for our profit , that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby . ” Hebrews 12:5-11.

It is so plain–that it needs no comment. It is so full–that a comment would but weaken it. May the Lord inscribe it upon your heart, my dear Madam, and upon mine.

A WORD OF ADVICE

September 5, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

I just finished reading another article, and again I was reminded of the sad situation our nation is in. There are many things I would like to say, many questions I would like to ask, many warnings I would like to send, and much advice I would like to give. Instead I want to give you just one thing to think about, actually just one word–Read!

The more informed we are the better off we will be. Ignorance often proves fatal. And in this case we’re talking about a national calamity–the ruin of a republic, the destruction of democracy. I know that sounds far fetched to most people. But it has happened in other places and we are foolish to think we are exempt from the possibility. We are in dangerous territory.

I’ve often said it would be better if some folks didn’t vote. That might seem strange, but it’s true. For example, illegals shouldn’t vote, but many do. Convicted convicts shouldn’t vote–they lost their right. And in my opinion the uninformed shouldn’t vote. Far too many people vote out of blind allegiance to a particular party, or because of the promise of personal gain, or because of the color of a person’s skin.

If you are going to vote you need to be well informed. You need to get the facts. You need to understand what’s important and whats not. You need to consider what’s at stake. You need information. But you won’t get it through osmosis. Neither will it come by way of a divine revelation delivered by angels floating around in the air. You need to read.

Don’t wait until the election is over and the damage has been done, then say,”I didn’t know”. Pleading ignorance when you could have known the truth won’t get you off the hook. The facts are everywhere. All you have to do is read, watch, and listen.

Many have been surprised by Obama and disappointed. Why? What’s the surprise? From his own writings, speeches, behavior, and associates he told you what he would do before he ever became president–yet you helped elect him anyway. Why? Simply because you didn’t read, you didn’t investigate, you didn’t search for the facts. Those who voted for him either agreed with him or were ignorant about him, either way they are just as guilty as he is. If that embarrasses you and hurts your feelings it should.

It is quite possible that America will never be the same again if Obama wins and is allowed to carry out his plans. We will have destroyed ourselves, without a shot being fired (unless it is at those who protest). We must not “fiddle while Rome burns”. The stakes are too high for us to fail to get involved. Our nation is about to make a choice that could take us over the cliff. Let us then make a well informed decision. We dare not blindly follow those who would lead us astray. We must walk in the light of the truth, follow the facts, lest the America we know and love is destroyed before our very eyes. Making the right decision demands the we look at the facts. My one one of advice is “Read”! Think about it.

DOERS OF THE WORD

November 9, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” – Ja.1:22

We’ve all been guilty of not doing what we know we should.  That is especially true in regards to doing what God tells us to do.  We hear His word, know what He says, but refuse to obey.  Do you realize that you would have been better off had you not had the opportunity to hear His word?  Hearing it makes you accountable.  Unto whom much is given, of him shall much be required.

I’ve heard people talk about leaving church the same way they came, but, while that might be true in a sense, technically it isn’t true.  Having heard the word of God we leave better or worse than when we came– depending on our response.  While submission softens the heart, rejection hardens it.  So, refusing to respond to God’s word is dangerous.  It changes us and the way God deals with us. In doing what we please and getting what we want we often miss getting what is best.

Isn’t it strange – all of creation responds to the voice of it’s Creator, except man.  A mother responds to the cries of her child.  The hungry person responds to a meal.  People respond to the offer of a “better” job. Most people respond to the commands of a law enforcement officer. Why then do we refuse to respond to God – the Highest Authority?  In this they do themselves a terrible injustice.

What we all need to remember is this – regardless of whether or not we personally benefit from obedience we are still obligated to obey God.  Our responsibility is more important than our comfort or compensation.  Although obedience to God always results in a great reward eventually it can subject us to great difficulties at the moment.  If our main concern is to glorify God we will do as He commands regardless of the cost, circumstances, or consequences.  We need to heed the advice of Mary who said, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it” (John 2:5).  That alone makes you a success in life!

THE WORST PRESIDENT IN AMERICAN HISTORY

September 2, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

Here is an article everyone needs to read. It is by Andy Woods of the Sugar Land Bible Church:

Have we lost our capacity to think in this culture? Why is this election even close? It should be a runaway blow out by now in favor of Romney. Just look at the President’s “record” over the last four years. Keep in mind, this is only an economic record. Obama’s record in foreign affairs, sovereignty matters, cultural issues, and corruption is even worse. Our country is falling apart at the seams:

Wake up America!

23 million unemployed, 43 straight months of 8+% unemployment (of course, this number does not even factor in real or virtual unemployment or take into account those who have given up looking for work altogether), 45 million on food stamps, black poverty at record highs, black youth unemployment over 50%, Hispanic unemployment at 11.3%, food prices up 15% under Obama, gas prices doubled under Obama, Obama has the worst job creation record since 1945, the Obama “recovery” is the worst in 75 years, median household income declined under Obama, the middle class has lost 40% of its net worth under Obama, average family health insurance up $1,500 under Obama, addition of $6 trillion to our debt…more than all Presidents combined, and Obama presided over the only US credit downgrade.

If socialism works, how come so many Americans are hurting? The Obama campaign slogan “change” has jokingly come to mean what is finally left in our pockets following all of these aforementioned economic problems.

I know, it is all Bush’s fault. If that is what you think, keep in mind that the Democrats controlled both the legislative and executive branches of government for two solid years. During that time, they did nothing to help us climb out of our economic problems. In fact, through unprecedented governmental spending and expansion, they made things worse. Remember, it was the Democratic leadership in the House (Nancy Pelosi), and the Senate (Harry Reid), and the Executive branch (Obama and 30 or more unelected Czars) that violated numerous legislative procedures and Constitutional protections to ram an unwanted and unpopular 2700 page bureaucratic monstrosity down our throats known as “Obamacare.” This stunt allowed the national government to confiscate one sixth of the private sector economy, and represented the largest Federal power grab since FDR’s “New Deal” and LBJ’s “Great Society.” And contrary to what Chief Justice Roberts and four other like-minded Supreme Court “jurists” may think about it, there is not a single shred of Constitutional authority to justify Obamacare. (I still can’t find the words “universal healthcare” in the 20 enumerated powers that the text of the Constitution actually ascribes to Congress.) At what point do these people become accountable for their actions? By perpetually blaming his predecessor, Obama, in effect, is arguing that he is immune from accountability.

Besides, Obama’s real problem is not with George Bush. Rather, it is with George Washington. It is America’s unique system of limited government that Obama seeks to “fundamentally transform.” By the way, America’s founding documents have provided more freedom and prosperity to more people than any other system in world history. (Interestingly, our majestic Constitution, including the Bill of Rights, spans a mere 10 pages, which is quite minuscule in comparison to the Obamacare maze). These founding documents need protecting, not transforming.

While on the subject of the Georges, I would be remiss not to mention George Obama, Barack Obama’s half brother who lives in Nairobi. As documented by Dinesh D’Souza in his new movie and book, George Obama lives in a hut and languishes in poverty-stricken conditions. Why won’t the President of the United States, the most powerful man in the free world, come to the financial rescue of his own kin and blood? Under the socialist mindset, he really does not have to since the role of charity belongs to the state rather than the individual. Such priorities explain why Socialists are some of the stingiest people on the planet. After all, it is VP Joe Biden who gave less than 1.5% of his own personal income to charitable causes in 2011, all while simultaneously and continuously clamoring for higher taxes and greater government size. George Obama has another strike against him, which also helps explain the president’s refusal to be his brother’s keeper. According to D’Souza, George Obama had the temerity to publish his pro-colonial thoughts, which are obviously sentiments that contradict Barack Obama’s well-known anti-colonial, Marxist worldview.

Despite disdaining George Bush, George Washington, and George Obama, there is another “George” whom Obama no doubt loves since Obama will owe him big time should he win this election. That fourth George is international financier and left-wing globalist George Soros.

Who in their right mind can argue against the obvious conclusion that Barack Hussein Obama is the worst President in American history? Well, I know there is at least one person out there who appreciates Obama, and that is Presidential disaster Jimmy Carter. After four years of the Obama Administration, we can safely say that the American public no longer categorizes Jimmy Carter as the single worst President in American history. A vote for Obama is nothing more than a vote for four more years of the same, or worse. Wake up America, before it’s too late!

I’M A POOR RICH MAN

November 8, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“As having nothing, and yet possessing all things.” – 2 Corinthians 6:10

My best friend throughout childhood sang in the Ozarkians Quartet. One of the songs I’ll never forget hearing him sing was called, “I’m A Poor Rich Man”. It is a song every Christian can identify with–God has no poor children. And,as I’ve said so many times, “Understanding who you are and what you have as a result of the person and work of Christ is key to everything in the Christian’s life”. I recently wrote a Morning Manna article entitled “Possession and Possessor”, based on Lam. 3:24 “The LORD is my portion”. The result of having the LORD as your portion is expressed in the text for this message—“possessing all things”. Commenting on this thought in 1840,James Smith wrote:

“The Lord’s family are generally poor; men may look at them as having nothing valuable, important, or calculated to make them happy; but in reality they possess all things, because God is theirs. Our God has said, “I am their inheritance,” and we say, “Thou art my portion, O Lord.”

His eternity is the date of our happiness; His unchangeableness, the rock of our rest; His omnipotence, our constant guard; His faithfulness, our daily security; His mercies, our overflowing store; His omniscience, our careful overseer; His wisdom, our judicious counsellor; His justice, our stern avenger; His omnipresence, our sweet company; His holiness, the fountain from which we receive sanctifying grace; His all-sufficiency, the lot of our inheritance; and His infinity, the extent of our glorious portion.

This is the blessedness of the people of the Lord: they have God for their God, and all His perfections engaged to make them blessed. O love the Lord! Live upon the Lord! Glorify God in the day of visitation! Make Him your portion and everlasting all!”

“To us the privilege is given
To be the sons and heirs of heaven;
Sons of the God who reigns on high,
And heirs of joys beyond the sky:
Oh, may our conduct ever prove
Our filial piety and love.”

For those who have never heard the song I have included the lyrics:

“I’m a poor rich man, yes, I’m a poor rich man.
Oh you see it really happened to me, I’m a millionaire.
I know that I am poor but I’ve got a lot more
Than many rich folks that I know.
I’ve got a home in the sky that money couldn’t buy,
And I’m a poor rich man.

We usually judge a man by the clothes that he wears,
By the car he’s ridin’ in.
And you can usually tell if he’s doin’ very well by the house he’s livin’ in.
But I am here to say that it don’t work that way
With everybody I know.
Because I just got acquainted with some poor rich folks
A little while ago

I’m a poor rich man, I’m a poor, poor rich man.
Oh you see it really happened to me, I’m a millionaire.
I know that I am poor but I’ve got a lot more
Than many rich folks that I know.
I’ve got a home in the sky that money couldn’t buy,
And I’m a poor rich man.

When a man is rich with this world’s goods
He’s usually got a lot of friends.
They all want to try to live so high
When they know that it’s a sin.
But even if I could, I don’t believe I would
Want the riches of this old world.
And when it’s time to go, I’ll be glad to know
That I’m a poor, poor rich man.

I’m a poor rich man, I’m a poor, poor rich man.
Oh you see it really happened to me, I’m a millionaire.
I know that I am poor but I’ve got a lot more
Than many rich folks that I know.
I’ve got a home in the sky that money didn’t buy,
And I’m a poor rich man.”
