THE ANSWER

September 22, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“For all have sinned , and come short of the glory of God;  Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past , through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.” –Rom. 3:23-26

Here is a question the natural mind cannot answer–How can sinful man be reconciled to a holy God? Here is a mystery that can only be unraveled by the wisdom of God. Here is a need that can only be met by the One who is all-powerful. There exist an enmity between sinful man and God who is holy that is so great that nothing short of divine love can settle it. But how can this be? What is the solution? Where do we find the answer? Fortunately God has the answer–God is the answer! John Stott stated it like this:

“How is it possible for the righteous God to declare the unrighteous to be righteous without either compromising his righteousness or condoning their unrighteousness? This is our question. God’s answer is the cross.

Without the cross the justification of the unjust would be unjustified, immoral, and therefore impossible. The only reason God ‘justifies the wicked’ is that ‘Christ died for the wicked’. Because he shed his blood in a sacrificial death for sinners, God is able justly to justify the unjust.

According to the Christian revelation, God’s own great love propitiated his own holy wrath through the gift of his own dear Son, who took our place, bore our sin and died our death. Thus God himself gave himself to save us from himself. This is the righteous basis on which the righteous God can ‘righteous’ the unrighteous without compromising his righteousness.”

Of all the things I’ve ever written, read, copied, or published, nothing is of greater importance than this. In this we see the solution for sin, help for the hopeless, deliverance for the defiled, God’s answer for man’s affliction. Doubt no more, He who cannot lie has spoken and given us the “hope of eternal life” (Tit. 1:2). Fear no more, for He gives us peace “which passeth all understanding” (Phil. 4:7). Weep no longer, He gives us “joy unspeakable and full of glory” (1 Pet. 1:8).

FACEBOOK FOOLISHNESS

October 12, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

“You’ve got to be kidding!”. “I can’t believe you said that”. “O no, not you too”. “Please tell me it isn’t true”. I must have read that wrong”. “Why?”. These are some of my first thoughts after reading some of the things on Facebook.Like a lot of things, TV, the computer, the internet, Facebook, etc. can be used for good or bad. Sadly, most people use it for the latter.

It is amazing what you can learn about people, without even trying, by simply reading what they say on Facebook. The disappointment of it has caused me to block some of those who requested to be added as “friends”. For the life of me, I cannot imagine why anyone would want others, especially their pastor, to know what they divulge on Facebook. It’s almost as though they want to be brought before the church in consideration of church discipline. It would be funny were it not so serious. Some are hanging themselves and don’t even seem to know it.

I have been shocked to learn what some folks are doing–“shocked” and very disappointed, even heart-broken. I can’t believe what some of you are doing, the places you go, what TV shows you watch, what views you hold, etc. It seems to me that this is information that you would want to hide, rather than make known. This has caused me to lose all respect for some people. I love them regardless of their behavior, but my confidence in them and my respect for them is gone. I never dreamed they would do what they’re doing. I had no idea–until they told me and everyone else on their Facebook account. I have to wonder if some parents know what their children are doing on Facebook. If they don’t they should. And if they do, in some cases I have less respect for the parents than I do for the children. Why would you allow your children to engage in filthy conversation? You’re the adult and it’s time you took charge of the situation.

Just this morning I noticed this post on Facebook—“Your words have power, use them wisely”. That’s good advice. I wish everyone would think about that before they posted things on the internet. Please consider the harm you are causing by posting information that destroys  your testimony as a Christian.  Doing wrong is bad enough – telling everybody about it is even worse!  Some things, many things, are better kept to  yourself – “A fool uttereth all his mind—.” (Prov.29:11).

I just finished reading an article entitled “Facebook – divorce stats.”  It is shocking.  A survey by the “American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers” showed that 81% of “the nations top divorce attorneys “reported an increase in social networking websites being used as evidence in divorce cases.  Facebook is the leader —“. Whether for good or bad, Facebook is a powerful tool. Not everyone has the maturity to use it wisely or safely.

I’m not saying that Facebook will destroy your marriage, although it might, but it can definitely do a lot of damage in other ways.  Please give serious consideration to what you post on Facebook, it could lead to some sad consequences.  What you say becomes public knowledge and it can literally ruin your testimony as a Christian.  Think about it!

TIME OF TROUBLE

September 21, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble.” –Psalm 37:39

The “time of trouble” can be a number of things. It can be something we have faced on numerous occasions or something new. Likewise the nature of the trouble can vary–it comes in all sorts and sizes. But the need in time of trouble is always exactly the same–“the LORD“. There is never a second when He is unneeded. As the song says, “I need Thee every hour”. The following article is found in an old publication called “Daily Portions”. I trust it will provide just what you need for whatever you are forced to face.

“Times of trouble try the saint of God, and they are meant to do so; that is the very purpose why they are sent, for “the Lord tries the righteous.” Still the promise holds good–“he is their strength in the time of trouble.” When he breaks up the fountains of the great deep of sin and iniquity, he strengthens his people that they may not be carried away by the flood. When he hides his face, he strengthens them to say, “Though he slays me, yet will I trust in him.” When temptation besets them severely, when they are put into the furnace, the Lord is with them there, as he was with the three men whom Nebuchadnezzar cast in. The Son of God is there with them, so that not a hair of their head is singed, nor does the smell of fire pass upon them (Dan. 3:27).

In all their afflictions he is afflicted, and by sharing it with them supports them under it. He is thus their strength; for he strengthens them with strength in their soul. He enables them to bear the weighty cross–to sustain the heavy load of trial and affliction–to put their mouth in the dust as needing and deserving his chastising strokes, and submit to his righteous dispensations and dealings as plainly sent by a gracious and loving hand.

And ever and anon he drops in a sustaining word, gives an encouraging look, bestows a soft and healing touch, and thus helps them to wait in faith and hope until in due time he sends full deliverance. Thus he helps and delivers, and will do so in every time of trouble down to their dying-bed, when he will give them their full and final deliverance from the body of sin and death, and a world full of iniquity and sorrow.”

DO YOU LOVE THE CHURCH

October 10, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Having just spent a day with folks who truly love the Lord and His church it got me to thinking—What we do, or don’t do, reveals our values. For example–we sing “O how I love Jesus”, but then we refuse to obey Him, which shows that our words are meaningless( John 14:23-24). That proves that we do not value our Christ as we should.

Sadly, many speak about their love for the church, but their actions say otherwise. Those who truly love the church will affirm their affection for it by their actions. Make no mistake about it–their love for the church will be evidenced by their support of the church. We need never wonder how they feel about it–it shows.

Since this is a well known fact, you would think these pretenders would embarrass themselves, but that’s not always the case. Amazingly most seem quite comfortable in their charade, as though others cannot see through it. It would be far better for everyone concerned if they were concerned enough to just be honest and confess that their love is lacking. Until we admit our problem we can’t solve it.

So, how is it with you? Do you truly love the Lord and His church? Someone put it like this–“If you were arrested for being a Christian would there be enough evidence to convict you?” Think about it–do you really truly love the church?

ARE WE MIRED DOWN?

September 20, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever . Amen.”–2 Peter 3:18

While we should consider this command as a responsibility, we ought to see it as much more. Doing as we are told is also a great blessing. The benefits of such growth affects every area of our life and provides what nothing else can do. Sadly, many are not growing and are missing God’s best for their lives. A W Tozer wrote:

“God will speak to us if we read and study and obey the Word of God! But when He does speak, we should speak back to Him in prayer and devotion. Otherwise, we are among the Christians who are mired down right where we are. Many in our congregations have grown older and yet are not one inch farther up the mountain than on that day when the sun first arose on them in conversion. In fact, some are not even as far advanced along the way with God as they were a few years ago. If these things are true, I can only conclude that there are “common” Christians, men and women who no longer hear the Lord speaking to them as they should. Can they really think that this half-way Christian life is the best that we can know? In the face of what Christ offers us, how can we settle for so little? It is a tragedy of our time that so many are settling for less than the Lord is willing to give!”
