THE JOY OF THE MEEK

July 14, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

The meek also shall increase their joy in the Lord–  Isaiah 29:19

Meekness is not a momentary decision, but a way of life. Someone has described biblical meekness as “putting the bit in your own mouth and handing the reigns over to God.” It is an humble attention, and receptivity, to the will of God.

The meek are often mistaken in our day as being weak. But meekness is actually great strength, under control — God’s control. Great faith, great commitment, and great determination are required on a daily basis to live a meek life before God. When He requires sacrifice, meekness trusts completely and gives willingly. When He demands obedience, meekness constrains selfish desires, crucifies personal ambition, and performs joyfully the good will of God.

It is for this reason that the joy of the meek is continually increasing. Their pleasure is not found in personal circumstances; their happiness is not derived from fleeting popularity; their fulfillment does not come from public success.

The meek find their joy in the Lord. Therefore, the more they have of Him, the more they experience of Him, the more they know of Him, the more their joy is increased. And the more their joy is increased, the more they desire to plant their joy in the Lord and not in this world.

What about you? Have you found the dependable and lasting and ever-increasing joy that comes from a life of complete submission to our good and wise and glorious God?—Baptist Bible Hour

DRESSING FOR COURT AND CHURCH

August 18, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

I just heard an interesting segment on radio station KTRH-740. The subject had to do with “Judges calling for better-dressed courtrooms”. The lead article, by Scott Crowder, said:
Headed to court? To be safe, break out your “Sunday-go-to-meeting” clothes.
Americans have become awfully casual with their dress at the courthouse, and that does not please Humble Congressman Ted Poe, a former judge.

“T-shirt and jeans is, in my opinion, not respectful of our American judicial system,” says Poe. “It’s something that you would wear to Walmart maybe, but not something that you’d wear to the courthouse.”

Across the country, judges are cracking down on sloppy dress, and Timothy Foutsko of the National Center for State Courts says there’s good reason.

“Those judges that maintain a good set of decorum in their courtroom tend to have less acts of violence, less acts of people acting out,” says Foutsko.

In commenting on this Ted Poe said that people should dress for the courtroom as they do for church. I wonder if he has noticed how people are dressing for church now-a-days? The way some people dress is pitiful. I could write a long article about this and I have done so in the past, but most people don’t care. They are going to do what they want regardless and they flaunt their rebellion without any shame whatsoever. They have no respect for scriptural principles, the pastor’s conviction, or the impression they make on others.
I will spare you the details, it wouldn’t do any good to spell out the specifics. Everybody gets the picture. Unlike the courts we don’t try to force people to conform to a dress code, but that doesn’t mean that you should dress any way you please. Common decency demands modestly and the dignity of a church service should motivate us to be at our best and be blameless.
When I think about dress codes from the past I can’t help but think that we owe an entire generation an aplogy. If what we see today is fine then what we required then was wrong and unfair. Part of the problem is that when you give an inch people take a mile–they always go to the extreme.
I know this is a touchy subject, but we need to be reminded that just any dress isn’t appropriate for a worship service–not now, not ever. The song “Just as I am” speaks about coming to the Lord for salvation, not the manner in which we dress for church. We don’t have a rule that requires people to comb their hair, shine their shoes and wear deodorant, but it’s a pretty good idea if you do. Over the years I have bent over backwards trying to be understanding and considerate regarding this issue, but some folks just don’t care. It seems strange that people have more respect for man’s law than they do for the Bible, more respect for the courthouse than the church house, more repect for the judge than the pastor. I hope you will THINK ABOUT IT!

HOW TO UNDERSTAND THE BIBLE

July 13, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“I understand more than the ancients, because I keep Thy precepts.” – Psalm 119:100

Several years ago I heard about a woman who had complained to her pastor that she couldn’t understand the Bible and was confused about God’s will for her life. The wise pastor responded by asking her if she could think of any areas of her life where she was failing to do as she should. When she confessed that she could think of some, the preacher said, “Then why should God Almighty reveal anything else to you?” Have you ever thought about that?

Adrian Rogers wrote, “People sometimes can’t understand why they don’t understand the Bible. Well, the way to understand the Bible is to obey the Bible. And the way to understand the verses you don’t understand is to obey the verses you do understand.

“More than the ancients” is a way of saying the accumulative wisdom of the ages. David is saying, “ I haven’t been off to the university perhaps, or I haven’t studied abroad, but I keep God’s Word and therefore God reveals to me His truth.”

The only way you can really understand the Bible is for God to reveal it to you, and God doesn’t reveal it to rebels.

Keep God’s Word, and through it God will reveal His truth. Some of you know what God wants you to do, but you’re not doing it. And you wonder why you’ve come up against a roadblock when you try to read the Bible.”

SAD NEWS

August 11, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

While sitting at my desk preparing for a funeral service in a couple hours I received a phone call telling me that my best childhood friend had just died. I could literally write a book about our childhood experiences. Jerry was the person responsible for getting me into church, and I was saved a few weeks later. He was the best singer I’ve ever known and had as much natural talent as anyone I know. Over the years we drifted apart and our lives went in different directions.I could say so many things, but it would be meaningless to most of you.
All this just serves to remind me that life is short, our days are uncertain, and nothing is more important that serving God—that’s the only reason God leaves any of us on earth. If we are going to live only to please ourselves there is no reason for us to be here–heaven is much more pleasing!
In light of these facts we need to pay close attention to the words of Solomon, “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do , do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.”(Ecc. 9:10). So, what are you living for? Are you serving God with all your might? Think about it!—Time is short!

PRESSING TOWARD THE GOAL

July 12, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

We are not called to fellowship with nonexistence. We are called to things that exist in truth, to positive things, and it is as we become occupied with these that health comes to the soul. Spiritual life cannot feed on negatives. The man who is constantly reciting the evils of his unconverted days is looking in the wrong direction. He is like a man trying to run a race while looking back over his shoulder. What the Christian used to be is altogether the least important thing about him. What he is yet to be is all that should concern him. He may occasionally, as Paul sometimes did, remember to his own shame the life he once lived; but that should be only a quick glance; it is never to be a fixed gaze. Our long permanent look is on God and the glory that shall be revealed. What we are saved from and what we are saved to bear the same relation to each other as a serious illness and recovered health. The physician should stand between these two opposites to save from one and restore to the other. Once the great sickness is cured the memory of it should be thrust out onto the margin of the mind to grow fainter and weaker as it retreats farther away; and the fortunate man whose health has been restored should go on to use his new strength to accomplish something useful for mankind. Yet many persons permit their sick bodies to condition their mental stuff so that after the body has gotten well they still retain the old feeling of chronic invalidism they had before. They are recovered, true enough, but not to anything. We have but to imagine a group of such persons testifying every Sunday about their late illnesses and singing plaintive songs about them and we have a pretty fair picture of many gatherings among Christians today.–A W Tozer
