QUARRELING WITH PROVIDENCE

December 11, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.”—Luke 22:42

James Alexander wrote in 1852, “The true recipe for miserable existence is this: Quarrel with Providence“. That is, to complain about what God causes, or refusing to accept what God allows. And I suspect that at times we are all guilty of such folly. Seldom do we honestly say “not my will“–that’s the opposite of how most folks feel. And, even when we say, “Thy will be done” we generally have some limitations in mind.

Although we know that God acts out of love, with wisdom, and in our best interest we tend to complain about certain things. Even knowing that God can use it for His glory and our good doesn’t always persuade us to accept some things. We seem to always have an excuse to justify our stubborn refusal to submit to the situation. It seems more reasonable to us that we be allowed to escape our troubles and trials rather than endure them.

We are familiar with the stories of Job, Joseph, and others who submitted to their suffering and refused to complain about their circumstances, but we don’t care about following their examples. Instead, we argue against what God allows into our lives. Knowing we can’t change it or control it we complain anyway– we continue fighting a losing battle. The only solution to this situation is submission, yielding ourselves to providence–even though God gives no explanation as to why things are as they are. But,when you truly trust God submitting to Him is no problem. You know that in yielding yourself to God you are in good hands—you couldn’t be in a safer place.

Don’t be one of those who say. “Thy will be done” and then complain because it is. Don’t argue when what God allows doesn’t meet with your approval. We say He does all things well, then act as though we have a better idea. We claim we deserve nothing, but act as though we deserve better. That is so unlike Christ that we ought to be embarrassed. The only path to peace is to trust God, as we’re told in Isa. 26:3 “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” —HDS

MAN ON A MISSION

December 1, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD…“–Psa. 71:16

He was old, feeble, hated, and in danger–at a point when many would have given up, but David said, “I will go“. He was saying, “I will not turn back in dread, sit down in despair, or give up in discouragement”. He overcame his fear with faith, his hurts with hope, and his pain with praise. Wounded, weak and weary he still believed God had a work for him to do. And he was determined that his difficulties would no deter him from his duty–thus he says, “I will go“.

His desire was noble, but there is a difference between desire and doing. How would a man so weak expect to keep going when everything seemed to be against him? How do you envision success when conditions are so contrary? He gives us the answer–“in the strength of the Lord GOD“. Not only was that David’s answer it is ours also.Victory is possible because God, who is all-powerful, is our strength. It is strength that has been promised by the God who cannot lie. It is strength that has been paraded throughout history for all to see, assuring us that what He promised He will provide.

Regardless of our circumstances we can have confidence that we are more than conquerors. He gives us strength for the struggle. David knew that and therefore he made his resolve. He knew he could rely on God. So can we! As the prophet said, “He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.“(Isa. 40:29). Therefore we have no excuse for dereliction of duty and no right to turn back. David’s declaration should give us courage to face any difficulty. His God is our God and He changes not.

Now notice why this was so important to David. He was a man on a mission. That’s why he added, “I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.” Then he ends his song like this–“My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long: for they are confounded, for they are brought unto shame, that seek my hurt.“(vs. 24). A man like that with a message like this needs to keep going– his mission is too important to be stopped! There was not a selfish bone in his body–he wanted to live so he could make the Living God known to those who were dead in trespasses and sins. Dear friend if that be our reason for living we have good reason to believe that God will answer our prayers. David said, “I will go”, will you? –HDS

DANGER IN DUTIES

November 26, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.”–Eph.2:8-9

One man said that he was more afraid of his duties than of his sins; for his duties often made him proud, but his sins always made him humble. Another said, ‘We must take heed not only of our sins, but of our good works.’

Of this matter, Thomas Brooks wrote,”Duties can never have too much diligence used about them, nor too little confidence placed in them. They are good helps, but bad saviors. It is necessary we do them, but it is dangerous to rely upon them. If the devil cannot dissuade us from performing pious duties, then his next work will be to persuade us to rely upon them, to make saviors of them; because this will as certainly ruin our souls….Now, let all these things work you to renounce your own righteousness—and to take sanctuary alone in the pure, perfect, and most glorious righteousness of Jesus Christ, and in the free grace of God.”

Dear friend, we cannot compensate for the wrong we’ve done by doing something right. When it comes to the forgiveness of sin and salvation from judgment, works won’t work! Good deeds can never make up for the sins we have committed. Nothing short of faith in the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ can save us from sin.–HDS

THE BEST YEARS

November 19, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.”–Philippians 3:7

Turning Point magazine says,”When Harold Russell’s hands were blown off in an accident, he sank into depression. One day Charley McGonegal, who had lost his own hands in war, told Russell, ‘For everything you have missed, you have gained something else.’

Russell rallied and went on to become an ambassador for the disabled. He won an Oscar for his role in the movie,  The Best Years of Our Lives . He wrote, ‘My weakness… has turned out to be my greatest strength. I didn’t think so at the time it happened and I don’t think I’d ever willingly lose my hands, if I had it to do all over again. But having lost them I feel perhaps I have gained many fine things…. It is not what you have lost, but what you have left that counts.’

When we look at past losses, it provides an opportunity to recalibrate for future service. The Lord can leverage our losses for ministry. Don’t give up. Your best years are now, and your best days are ahead.”

Far too often we excuse our failures by blaming them on something or someone else other than ourselves. One of the most common ways is by thinking of our burdens as barriers rather than blessings in disguise. Sometimes not having a “handicap” is our greatest handicap. A child of God in the will of God has every reason to believe that when God takes something away from us it is so He can give us something better–although we might not see it until much later. Let us then remember those words to Harold Russell– “For everything you have missed, you have gained something else.” –HDS

THE POWER OF CHOICE

November 16, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“I will praise the Lord according to His righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the Lord most high.” – Psalm 7:17

The unsaved person is in a horrible condition. We see that in Paul’s expression of concern for the lost recorded in 2 Tim 2:26 “And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.” Thankfully the very moment we trust Christ as our Lord and Savior He sets us free, enabling us to do what we couldn’t do before. Now we have the privilege of choice and that is a powerful thing.

Adrian Rogers wrote, “Did you know that happiness is a choice?

A man said to a beggar one day, “Good day my friend.”

The beggar answered, “Well, thank you, but I never have a bad one.”

The man responded, “Well, may God give you a happy life, my friend.”

And the beggar replied, “I thank God that I am never unhappy.”

The man was speechless. And the beggar continued, “When I have plenty to eat, I thank God. When I am hungry, I thank God. If it is God’s will for me to endure this, then whatever is God’s will for me makes me happy.”

He chose to be happy.

What do you want? Do you want to be happy? Then choose to be happy today no matter your circumstances…by praising God.”
