VOTING GOD OUT

November 6, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“…haters of God..“–Rom. 1:30

What a shocking thought! The uninformed might suppose that this refers to a very small class of extraordinarily vile sinners, but it goes far beyond that. They are unaware of the fact that the natural man is an enemy to God. Were that not the case there would be no need for a Redeemer and reconciliation. The fact is, “the carnal mind is enmity against God..” (Rom. 8:7). That is a terrible position to be in, but those who hate God are there by their own choice.

Although God has given such a revelation of Himself that we are “without excuse” (Rom. 1:20), the willful sinner would rather create a god in his own image rather than be controlled by the God who created him. Having the freedom to receive or to reject God, you could say, he opts to vote God out and become his own god– “worshiping the creature more than the Creator” (Rom. 1:25). In this we see the root of man’s problem, the reason for his condemnation, and the record of his folly in a nut shell.

Such sinners might love religion, but they loathe the Redeemer. They hate God who is holy and say in their heart “We will not have Him rule over us”. They would rather bow down to a blind idol made of stone than the living all-seeing God. Their carnal hearts are so corrupt that they enjoy and embrace the very things that destroy them, rather than the life-giving God who loves them. Although God “commandeth all men every where to repent” (Acts 17:30), they continue on as enemies in their rebellion against Him which leads to their ruin.

Indeed, the God hater has voted God out– self sets on the throne, misery fills his days, sin marks his ways, and he lives as a slave to his own lusts. Not until the end, when every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Christ is Lord, does he realize that he cast a losing vote. What about you? How will you vote? “Choose you this day whom ye will serve..“(Josh. 24:15). I’m voting for Jesus!  –HDS

STAY ALERT

November 4, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“..He wist not that the LORD was departed from him.” –Judges 16:20

I’ve probably said it 1000 time–“Backsliding is like a slow-leak rather than a blow-out”. Just as spiritual growth is so slow that we don’t feel it happening, so it is with backsliding. When we see the fall of a man it appears to have happened overnight, when actually he had been in a spiritual decline for months or years. Let us learn a lesson from Samson.

F. B. Meyer said, “Beware of unconscious deterioration! Grey hairs may be here and there upon us without our knowing it. The Lord may be gone out on feet so noiseless, that we are not aware that His Spirit has glided along the corridor, and through the doorway, whispering, Let us depart.

Deterioration is unconscious because it is so gradual. The rot that sets in on autumn fruit is very gradual. The damp that silences the violin or piano does its work almost imperceptibly. Satan is too knowing to plunge us into some outrageous sin at a bound. He has sappers and miners engaged long before the explosion, in hollowing subterranean passages through the soul, and filling them with explosives.

Spiritual declension blunts our sensibility. The first act of the burglar is to gag the voice that might alarm, and poison the watch-dog. So, sin blinds our eyes, and dulls our keen alertness to the presence of evil. Thus, the stages of our relapse are obvious to all eyes but our own. We are drugged as we are being carried off captives.

The progress of evil within us is a matter of unconsciousness, largely because we are quick to discover reasons to justify our decadence. We glaze over the real state of affairs. We call sins by other names. We insist on considerations which in our eyes appear to justify our conduct. We still attend to our religious duties, and try to persuade ourselves that it is with us as in times past. To avoid deterioration we must ever watch and pray, and realize that we are the temple of the Holy Ghost. Then shall the peace of God as a sentry guard our hearts and our thoughts in Christ Jesus.”

Regardless of how knowledgeable, talented, strong, or famous you are the possibility of you falling and bringing reproach upon Christ never goes away. It can happen to anyone. Stay alert!–HDS

A STUDENT OF THE SCRIPTURES

November 1, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.“—Heb. 5:12

For 50 years I have repeatedly declared that every Christian should be a student of God’s Word. We should all become teachers in a sense, but you can’t communicate what you don’t comprehend. We must be taught before we can teach. Since God speaks to us through His Word, what could be more important than this? I’m not talking about simply reading a section of the Scriptures each day– although we should do that. Nor am I talking about merely reading a devotion that someone has written–although that can be profitable. I’m talking about actually studying the Bible yourself. Think of yourself as a teacher and study a portion of the Bible as though you were going to teach it the next day. Any teacher will tell you that they learn more from their lessons than anyone else.

Yet, try as I have, I feel that I have failed miserably in convincing people to make Bible study a daily habit. Maybe I haven’t tried hard enough. Or, perhaps I haven’t used the right method. I’m certainly willing to take some of the blame. However, when all is said and done the responsibility lies on their doorstep. Even if I did nothing to encourage you, and in fact tried to stop you, that shouldn’t dissuade you from studying the Bible. Considering the wonder of the Word why should you need anyone to encourage you to study it? It is so amazing how could it not get your attention and win your affection? It is so helpful how could you possibly fail to see the need?

The only thing that keeps me from studying more is the demands placed upon me by the Word. If I had no other duties I could be content studying the Bible eight hours a day. Maybe you’re thinking, “Well that’s just because you’re a preacher and that’s what you are suppose to do”. But you’re wrong. Were I never to preach again my love for and joy in Bible study would still be there. And I’m convinced that those who truly see the wonder and worth of the Word feel the same. I don’t understand how any child of God wouldn’t have that same love for the Word of God. Why should anyone have to beg and plead to encourage you to study the Bible. You don’t have to beg healthy people to eat. If there is a prolonged loss of appetite there is something wrong– whether it is food or the Bible. Our attitude should be exactly as that of Job–“..I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food“(Job 23:12).

Forget the lame excuses–such as “I’m too busy. I just don’t have enough time”. You have as much time as anyone else. You have time to eat, sleep, work and play. Why no time for the Bible? It’s not a matter of time, it’s a matter of priorities and priorities are based on values. When we see the value of Bible study we make time for it. People neglect it because they fail to see the need for it. In their mind it is not essential. They feel as though they can get along just fine without it, but they are wrong!

Getting people to see their need is what’s difficult. You can make a list of all the benefits and preach sermons about it, but that doesn’t assure that they will get the message. Although the Bible clearly declares and describes man’s need for God’s Word few are impressed enough to do anything about it. Whatever it takes, every person has to decide for themselves. For some, a few it seems, instruction is enough, but for others it takes a need or crisis of some sort. They won’t develop a desire for the Word until they are devastated in some way. Then out of desperation they might turn to the Bible for help. The truth is that you need help whether you realize it or not and Bible study affects you whether you know it or not. Just do it then watch God work. –HDS

DUTY IN A DAY OF DECAY

October 25, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“But, O LORD of hosts, that judgest righteously, that triest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I revealed my cause.“–Jer. 11:20

I love the book of Jeremiah! There’s just something about that man and his ministry that I admire. Considering his circumstances it’s easy to identify with him. As we face the difficulties of our day it is encouraging to consider what he experienced and endured. Ray Stedman suggested that “the central lessons of this book is what happened to Jeremiah as God prepared him to minister in a day of decay”. That phrase “day of decay” certainly describes the troublesome times in which we live.

To understand our text we need to see the big picture. The nation’s sins had reached the point that judgement was certain–so much so that God forbid the prophet to pray for the people (vs. 14). Then he discovered that the people he loved had plotted against him to take his life (vs. 18-19). So it is in the light of all this that he prays,”But, O LORD of hosts, that judgest righteously, that triest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I revealed my cause.”Notice, he brought his problem to the Lord, rather than ranting against his enemies. He prays that evil would be extinguished. That was the proper thing to do–even though it involved people he cared about deeply.

Sometimes things have to get worse before they can get better– so getting “worse” isn’t bad when it is the means of bringing better. Jeremiah knew that God’s judgement is righteous, therefore he prays, “let me see thy vengeance on them”. This was not personal–a plea for God to hurt those who hurt him. His prayer is prompted by the hope for healing, not hatred. The wise prophet knew there was a price to be paid for removing evil from the land. He was aware that his people would have to hurt before they could be helped. Wanting to see God take action is not cruel, especially when there is no other solution. We should desire the destruction of the destroyers who set themselves against God and desire to bring our nation to naught. Praying for such is not “unchristian” as some people would have you to believe. It is in fact our duty to pray that God will do whatever is necessary to stop those who are plotting the downfall of God’s people. Looking at the moral landscape today, the identity of our enemies is clear and just voting against them is not enough– we must also pray ” let me see thy vengeance on them“. Only God can defeat those who would destroy us.–HDS

RUNNING THE RACE

October 24, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,”–Heb. 12:1

This verse likens the Christian life to a race. I can’t speak for anyone else but the thought of running doesn’t sound appealing to me. While I always enjoyed sports I never enjoyed running. It seems unnatural to me. I would rather walk. In other words, running is not something I would choose for myself. Yet, as a Christian, there is a race “set before” me and I commanded to “run“.

As Christians God has a prescribed course for each of us and it’s our duty to “run“. Because of who we are and what God has planned none of have the right to do as we please. Duty compels us to “run” rather than walk, jog, or sit on the sidelines. The nonsense of those who teach that we shouldn’t spend our lives doing things we don’t enjoy has no place in the believer’s life. God demands that we deny ourselves and do our duty, regardless of its difficulty. God never said it would or should be fun and easy. Paul discusses the difficulties of the disciples life in 1 Cor. 9:24-27 and there is no reason for us to expect it to be easier for us than it was for Paul.

The Greek word for “race” (agon) is the word from which we get the word “agony”. It speaks of that which is grueling, agonizing, and exhausting. Although compared to a contest, the Christian life is no game. This analogy is used only to show us what great effort we should put into it. It is also likened unto warfare– implying conflict, battle, and struggle. The fight is fierce, the enemy is strong, the flesh is weak, and the stakes are high. Thought weak, wounded and weary we must not quit. We must press on with all our might until we cross the finish line. Your flesh will resent it and your foes will resist it, but we must keep on. The goods news is that we don’t have to depend on our own strength to run this race. As Paul said, “ I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”–Phil. 4:13. — HDS, 10/24/16
