LIGHTEN THE LOAD

October 23, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,“–Heb. 12:1

In 1845, the ill-fated Franklin Expedition sailed from England to find a passage across the Arctic Ocean.

The crew loaded their two sailing ships with a lot of things they didn’t need: a 1,200-volume library, fine china, crystal goblets, and sterling silverware for each officer with his initials engraved on the handles. Amazingly, each ship took only a 12-day supply of coal for their auxiliary steam engines.

The ships became trapped in vast frozen plains of ice. After several months, Lord Franklin died. The men decided to trek to safety in small groups, but none of them survived.

One story is especially heartbreaking. Two officers pulled a large sled more than 65 miles across the treacherous ice. When rescuers found their bodies, they discovered that the sled was filled with table silver.

Those men contributed to their own demise by carrying what they didn’t need. But don’t we sometimes do the same? Don’t we drag baggage through life that we don’t need? Evil thoughts that hinder us. Bad habits that drag us down. Grudges that we won’t let go.-David C. Egner

Even sinless things can become sinful if they keep us from doing what we should. Innocent activities can divert our attention, dominate our time, and drain our energy so as to keep us from the more important things of life. We are often kept from the best by that which is good as well as what is evil. Let us then “lay aside every weight“.–HDS

ARE YOU CONTENT?

October 17, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“be content with such things as ye have“–(Heb. 13:5)

“Yeah, I’m content!”— You’re kidding, right? That just might be the most common lie on earth. Listen to yourself! Maybe you ought to record what you say throughout the day and play it back to yourself before bed time each night. Listen to yourself carefully. In total disregard for what the Bible says we indict ourselves everyday. We are always pining, reaching, craving, and begging for something more, something else, something bigger, better, or different. And it’s not just about material things, although that might be number one on the list, it has to do with every area of life.

The Bible says,”– having food and raiment, let us be therewith content“(1 Tim. 6:8), and “be content with such things as ye have“( Heb. 13:5), but who is? Very very few! That’s bad enough, but it’s even worse that we keep lying about it— as though God doesn’t know and others can’t tell. Your words bear witness against you. We’re like a bunch of spoiled brats, never satisfied with what we have and/or where we are in life. Have you noticed that covetousness and complaining go hand in hand? We can’t keep our mouths shut. Eventually we end up revealing what is in our heart. We don’t like our situation and we’re going to tell someone about it.

Even when we are forced by evidence to admit that we aren’t content we come up with some explanation to excuse it. Is that not an evidence that we don’t really believe that “all things work together for good“? We accept the good but complain about the bad. But the command to be content doesn’t change with the circumstances. We are to be content regardless of our situation–good, bad, or ugly. Does that sound unreasonable to you? Probably so. It just doesn’t seem right that we are to be content when we’ve been wronged. Surely, we think, the wrong gives us the right to vent our frustration, so we allow ourselves to be controlled by our feelings.

No one can force you to be content. You are the only one who can do that. Ask yourself this question, “Does my discontent and complaining make things any better? The answer is “No”. Since that’s the case, ask yourself this question, “Would I be happier if I obeyed the Bible by being ‘content with such things‘ as I have?” There’s your answer. We make ourselves miserable. We can blame the other person or God all we want but in the end we have only ourselves to blame. No one can take your happiness–it must be surrendered and we give it up when we allow ourselves to be discontent. Remember, those who deserve nothing, should be content with everything, and not complain about anything. God help us all!–HDS

WHAT MAKES YOU GLAD?

October 15, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad”.–Psalms 126:3

This could be the text for a thousand sermons! To list all the great things God has done would be impossible. His blessings are more than can be numbered. However, it is important that we count our blessing, the best we can, and rejoice in them. That can keep you going when the road is rough, the times are tough, and the days are difficult. We live in troublesome times and we’re often discouraged by our difficulties. Fears cause us to lose our focus and blinds us to our blessings. Then things go from bad to worse. To prevent that we must remember that we not only have a responsibility to rejoice, but a reason also–many reasons. We dare not overlook them.

Some times we are guilty of overlooking things that should be cause for great rejoicing. For example, someone inquires about how church was Sunday and we say, “The attendance was up, three were baptized and, O yeah one was saved”. We witness a soul being saved and then mention it with no more excitement than a comment about the weather. How can that be? How excited would you be if someone paid off all your debt and deposited a million dollars in your account? Or if your dearest loved one was healed of terminal cancer? Or, what if God raised your dearest loved one from the dead? Imagine that! Yet the salvation of a soul is an even greater miracle than any of those things. How can we not get excited about seeing someone born again?

If getting a raise, having your team win a ball game, or seeing your candidate win the election excites you more than a soul being saved, something is horribly wrong in your life. Absolutely nothing is more important or glorious than the salvation of a lost sinner. It is a great blessing to witness someone become a child of God, to have all their sins forgiven, to be delivered from their sins, and to be assured of a home in heaven. If ever there was a “WOW!” moment that is it. Witnessing this will cause you to have a good day even though everything else seems to be going wrong. Perhaps the best evidence that a church needs a revival is its lack of concern for lost souls. Just how glad are you when a sinner is saved? — HDS

DON’T FORGET THE WORD

October 13, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word. Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word.”–Ps. 119:15-17

Urging people to spend more time in prayer and Bible study seldom meets with success. They seem to think you are trying to torture them, or at least deprive them of better things. If you feel that way all I know to say is, “WOW! Someone has surely misled you”. That’s like saying a love letter from your sweetheart is boring. Are you kidding me? How can you not get excited about God speaking to you? Were His voice loud and audible would that make a difference? Why? Knowing it comes from our loving heavenly Father should be all that matters. Whether you understand it or not, He has chosen this as the means best suited for us.

I’ve got the feeling that most people think this is only for preachers and teachers. They fail to see that this is something every Christian needs. It’s not just something we enjoy, it is essential to our well-being and our effectiveness as servants of the Lord. You wonder why you can’t resist temptation, defeat depression, experience joy, rest in peace, conquer doubt, calm fears, gain wisdom, and all the while you neglect the very thing needed to do these things. What do you expect? There are consequences to our choices and neglect of God’s Word is one of the worst you can make. In these verses we see the writer’s promise, pleasure, pursuit, plea, and purpose. What about you? What could be said about your attitude toward the Word of God? I speak about this subject often because I know how important it is. I beg you–please stop depriving yourself of that which you need most. Don’t just read your Bible, study it and meditate in it. Blessing are sure to come to those who do.

F. B. Meyer said, “Listen attentively to the Word of Truth, written or spoken. Be quick to notice the smallest symptom of inconsistency between your life and the perfect beauty of Jesus, and set yourself immediately to correct it. Be merciful to the failings of everyone else, but be merciless to your own. Let no fault remain uncorrected, and no call to duty unanswered. For you to live, let it be Christ. Your blessedness and happiness will come in choosing the Christ-life, in doing, and continuing to do what He would have you do.”–HDS

SELF-CONTROL

October 12, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance….”–Gal. 5:22-23

Not only is it easy to see how our nation got into such a deplorable condition, it’s easy to see why our future seems so dim. We look at our situation, complain about it, and sometimes even debate the issues, but we don’t take action. We refuse to allow anything to disrupt our lifestyle. We talk about the dangers we face and how our future hangs in the balance, but we “fiddle while Rome burns”. The only thing most people are committed to is the pursuit of pleasure. As long as they are pleased nothing else seems to matter. Even those who would not admit to being one of those with a sense of entitlement, and do not depend on the government for a handout, are equally guilty when it comes to the sin of covetousness. So what do we do about it?

When’s the last time you thought about the words, “Confirm thy soul in self-control”? We often sing or hear the song without giving any serious thought as to what it is saying. We love to talk about freedom and liberty, but not so much about “self-control“. Self-government is great, but it works only for a virtuous  people. Our forefathers were emphatic about that. However when we are out of control, unable to govern ourselves, we are unable to elect the kind of people needed to rightly govern our nation. Our country is in this present mess, not because of any one leader or party, but because of the selfish, out of control populace that empowers them. And, if we look deep enough, I suspect we all can see that we are contributors to the problem. We cannot condone in ourselves what we condemn in others and expect anything to change for the better. As Christians we should know better.

For Christians the only acceptable form of self-control is to be Spirit-controlled. If we aren’t under His control we are out of control. This is a paradox–being Spirit-controlled results in self-control. He enables us to what we could never do on our own. Only by walking in the Spirit can we experience true self-control and walk in the path of righteousness (Gal. 5:16-21). — HDS, 10/12/16
