PURSUING YOUR PURPOSE

April 20, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“..do all to the glory of God.“–1 Cor. 10:31

Perceiving your purpose in life is one thing, pursuing it is another. It’s not always as easy as you might think. While God clearly directs us in many matters, in others He allows us to decide (1 Cor. 7:39}– so long as we don’t violate the principles of God’s Word. Our text reveals what should be the determining factor in every decision we make– will it glorify God? It is not for us to decide how we shall live. We are to live in obedience to God and that requires us to live for the glory of God. Any other pursuit is a waste.

Too often, when faced with a decision, we ask the wrong questions. Is there any profit in it? Is there any harm in it? The real question should be “will it glorify God?” If it doesn’t we should refrain. There are a lot of what we call “gray areas” in life–areas where it is not apparent that it is right or wrong, questionable things. Our response to those are very telling as to our character. Just because it doesn’t break a commandment that doesn’t mean we should do it. Even sinless things can become sinful. So rather than get lost in the maze of questions as to whether our choice is right or wrong we should ask ourselves “will it bring glory to God?” If it does that’s all that matters, because that’s what matters most. If it doesn’t we should avoid it like the plague. No good can come from doing that which fails to bring glory to God. When in doubt don’t. “Do all to the glory of God“—that makes the smallest thing of major importance.–HDS

REMEMBER WHAT JESUS SAID

April 16, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. And they remembered his words,” –Luke 24:6-8

If ever those women needed a reminder of something like this it was at a time like that. They were at the Lord’s grave. The tomb was empty and their minds were full of questions. It was then that the angels reminded them of their need to remember what Jesus said.

Those faithful women are not the only ones in need of a reminder. We need it also. Forgetfulness fuels our fears and leaves us troubled when there is no need to be. Busy with the affairs of life and burdened by the trials of life we sometimes forget what Jesus said. Although He addressed the very need that confronts us, speaking the truth in love and out of wisdom we often fail to remember what He said.

That’s why it is crucial that we treasure up His words in our heart and consult the Scriptures daily. The brightness of His promises provide light that can’t be seen anywhere else. The nourishment of the Master’s manna gives strength that can’t be provided by anything else. The healing balm of His word can heal our hurts. His precious promises can bring us hope, even all seems lost.

Regardless of where you are or what you need, it will help you to remember what Jesus said. Give up whatever needs to go to make time for this. His words of truth are of far greater value than the treasures of this world. What Jesus said not only has power to direct and delight, but also to deliver. Never should we forget to “remember how he spake“.

Better to miss a meal. or a night’s sleep, or a days work than to go a day without God’s Word. We can do without a lot of things, but this isn’t one of them. You aren’t ready to face the future until you’ve looked back to what Jesus said. Never start the day’s journey without first having considered what Jesus said.–HDS

KEEP GOING

April 15, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.”–Mark 16:2-4

It’s a fact–most of our worries are nothing to worry about. Most of them never happen. God is way ahead of us. He is already working on what you are worried about and things you don’t even know about. Wherever you are going, God is already there. He has the answer before you know the question. That’s a relief!  Notice, these women were worried about “the stone“. In their mind it was there and it was too heavy for them to move. They were worried about something that was already gone. But give them credit, they kept going! When they arrived they discovered what they had worried about was gone.

It might be, as you look down the road you are traveling you are worried about what might lie ahead– something too big for you.But rather than worry about what’s down the road we need only make sure we are on the right road where we ought to be. If we are in the will of God we are in a safe place. That doesn’t mean we won’t face difficulties or suffer pain, but it assures us the outcome will be the best possible.

Regardless of how impossible your situation seems God is able to solve it. He is greater than your problem. And, knowing what He can do, what He has done, and what He has said gives us faith and peace. The Bible repeatedly tells us not to fear or worry, so such a life is possible and definitely more pleasant than trying to solve everything ourselves. Doing good will meet with some difficulties that puts our faith to the test. Expect it, but keep moving on toward your goal. God is already there. Whatever fear you are facing God is able to remove it, defeat it, and use it for good. He has proven Himself by defeating death, hell and the grave. Trust Him! –HDS

TIME OF NEED

April 8, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”-– Heb. 4:15-16

The phrase “in time of need” doesn’t have to do with our selfish desires or worldly lust. It speaks of a genuine need. And while our needs can be greatly varied the context demands that we consider “our infirmities“. Clearly he is speaking of our needs during times of trials and temptation. We all need help then because we are weak and unable to cope with the things that threaten us.

Thankfully there is One who understands, cares, can and will help. In Christ we find not only a sympathetic friend, but one who has the strength to “help in time of need”. He is the great High Priest who opens our way “unto the throne of grace” from whence comes our supply. It is there that we “obtain mercy and find grace“. Were it not for that the strongest and wisest saints would faint, fall, and fail. But because our Master is the Mediator we are invited to “come boldly unto the throne of grace”.

If this moment is your “time of need” accept His invitation and receive His help. You can’t find it any place else. There is no other option. Christ isn’t one of many ways, He is the only One who can help. He is our only hope. As soon as you sense your need you should rush to the throne of grace, where the helpless find help. Neither the number or the nature of your needs matter. With Him all things are possible. Don’t wait until you are crushed beneath the weight of your woes, harmed by your hardships, defeated by your foes, or embittered toward life. Whatever your need is, we serve a God who is able to meet it and He invites you to “come boldly”.–HDS

DESIRING DEATH

April 6, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:“—Phil. 1:23

What would you think if I said, “The longer I live the less I want to live”? Some would say I must be depressed. Others might think that I’m soured on life–like Solomon when he said, “I hated life”. A few might even think I was suicidal. I suspect that most people would think of it as a negative statement and be critical. If not that, they might even pity my soul, as though I shouldn’t feel that way.

But what about Paul? Do you think he had a bad attitude when he spoke of having a “desire to depart“(Phil. 1:23)? Was he wrong? Did he have a bad attitude? I don’t think so. Keep in mind that this was no fleeting, spur of the moment feeling that swept over him and disappeared. The Greek word translated “desire” means “passionate desire”. Most of the time it is used in a negative context and is translated “lusts”. But here it is used in a positive sense. His desire was intense– putting great pressure on him.

I love the way Francis Patton (1843-1932) put it when he compared David and Ps. 23:4 to Paul and Phil. 1:23. He said, “David was willing to go, but wanting to stay, but Paul was willing to to stay but wanting to go”. I’m sorry if it offends you or that you don’t understand, but I feel as Paul did–“willing to stay, but wanting to go”. And the older I get the stronger the feeling. If you find fault with that would you please explain what it means to “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth”(Col. 3:2)? I feel like the old song that says, “I’m homesick for heaven, I’ve got a longing to go“. If you don’t understand that maybe you ought to spend more time reading the Bible. Heaven is a promotion, not a demotion. It is gain, not loss.

Pay close attention to what Paul didn’t say. He didn’t say, “I want to depart because of the difficulties here”. Nor did he say, “I want to depart because of the delights of heaven”– although that would be understandable. What he said was that he had “a desire to depart, and be with Christ“. That was his motivation. You could build a strong case for death being preferred over life because of the painful things we leave, or the pleasurable things we receive, but neither of those were Paul’s point of emphasis. It was not the woes of earth, nor the wonders of heaven–no, it was the attraction of Christ that he mentions. Nothing we escape here or enjoy in heaven can compare to Christ. For Paul, whether it was in life or in death, it was all about Christ. Christ was his all and all! His desire wasn’t due to the wickedness of the world, or the weariness of the flesh, nor even the wonders of heaven, great as they are. It was all about Jesus. That’s not to say that those things never entered his mind, most assuredly they did, but it was Christ alone that was first and foremost on his mind. So I make no apology when I say, the longer I live the less I want to live.–HDS
