LEARNING TO LISTEN
A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels;–Prov. 1:5

As a boy one of the most irritating things I heard was, “I told you so!”, or “Didn’t I tell you?” And as a father to eight I have often dropped that bomb on my kids. I didn’t want to hear it and I’m sure my children felt the same, but sometimes we all need reminders like that. Being forced to face our failures can be a good, although unpleasant, thing. Especially when we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Thinking about this, I can’t help but wonder what God thinks when we turn a deaf ear to His instructions and warnings. Although He speaks out of the depths of His great wisdom and glorious love we tend to ignore what He says– to our own detriment. In doing this we deprive ourselves of His blessings and expose ourselves to great danger. Foolish indeed!

Whether as a child or a Christian I’m sure we can all look back and think of those times when we wish we had listened. And that reminds me of another one of the least favorite things my parents said–“When are you going to learn to listen?” Yeah, I bet you’ve heard that too. And you probably responded just like I did– with a blank stare. But it is actually a good question and worthy of our consideration. When will we learn to listen? After we’ve humiliated ourselves? Hurt ourselves? Harmed others? Hit rock-bottom? Would we not be better off to listen and learn?

God has given us competent counsel, clear commands, wise warnings, and precious promises. He demands that we listen and He deserves to be heard. If we refuse we have only ourselves to blame for the outcome. If we listen and learn we have only God to praise. Without His aid we neither would nor could do as we should. God still speaks today, and “A wise man will hear–“. Are you listening?—HDS, 1-8-14

UNDERSTANDING OUR UNDERTAKING
“And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;” ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭1‬:‭9‬ ‭

Some seem to think than since we Bible believing Christians are in the minority that we must be in error – after all the majority must be right they reason. However, when you consider the depravity of man, it should be obvious that the opposite is true. History  proves that God’s people have always been in the minority. A good example of this is found in the book of Judges, which is a record of horrible stories. It was a time when every man did that which was right in his own eyes Jud. 21:25. Yet as bad as it was, there were a few heroes, who stood true to God. They were as lights in a sin darkened world. Although few in number they had great affect.

Even so, if a church stands for the truth and against sin, it is probably not going to be the biggest and most popular church in town. We need to remember that we’re not trying to win a popularity contest. Bigger isn’t always better. The size of the crowd doesn’t determine the spirituality of the church.

But, however small and few, a scripturally sound church is of great importance. It is a guiding light to those trapped in the darkness of depravity. Although we want to reach as many as possible and grow as large as we can we must not compromise. God has always had a remnant of godly people , and it’s among that number we should desire to be in. Success isn’t measured by the size of the crowd, but by our commitment to Christ. May God help us to care more about his will than we do about the ways of the world. In these evil times when everyone goes by their chosen set of values and definition of right and wrong, we need to raise the standard of God’s word and say “this is the way walk ye in it” Isaiah 30:21.

We will never win the world by being like the world. We can only make a difference by being different. And when I say “different “ I mean living by scriptural standards rather than sin. There must be a balance between our beliefs and behavior or else we make the glorious gospel repulsive to those who are lost. We must practice what we proclaim or be used as an excuse by those who are unsaved. As someone said long ago, “We are the only Bible some people will ever read. God forbid that we leave the wrong impression “- HDS

GODLY CONTENTMENT

The following is taken from an old article in the popular daily devotional book “Our Daily Bread”.

Contentment is never the result of multiplying riches, increasing pleasures, or gaining fame. All these only incite discontent, for when one obtains them, he finds he still is not satisfied. Contentment does not depend upon things on the outside, but results from conditions on the inside! Paul had suffered more for the sake of Christ than probably anyone else ( 2 Cor. 11:23-28); yet this is the man who says, “I am content.” The apostle was able to interpret all the experiences of life in terms of God’s will for his eternal good ( Rom. 8:28). Paul did not come to this happy philosophy of life in a moment. He says, “I have learned … to be content.” Aspiring to be what we are not, or grasping after riches which elude us, is not the way to happiness. We must rather do our very best with God’s help to accomplish our life’s task with the talents and opportunities He presents.

In his famous lecture on “Clocks and Watches,” Dr. Joseph Parker related the following story: A little watch, delicately strung, was dissatisfied with its restricted sphere of influence in a lady’s pocket. It envied the position of Big Ben, the great tower clock. One day as it passed with her ladyship over London’s Westminster Bridge, the tiny watch exclaimed, “I wish I could go up there! I could then serve multitudes, instead of just one individual.” “You shall have your opportunity, small watch,” she said. The lecturer then dramatically described how the pocket timepiece was drawn up the side of the mammoth tower by a slender thread. When it reached the top, it was completely lost to view. In his dramatic way, Dr. Parker concluded his lecture by exclaiming, “Its elevation had become its annihilation!”

Pray that you too may not lose the small influence you now have for Christ by coveting something larger for which you are not equipped, and which God constantly refuses you in His love.

O for the peace of perfect trust
My loving God in Thee;
Unwavering faith that never doubts
Thou choosest best for me. —Anon.

Discontent makes rich men poor,
While contentment makes poor men rich

TRUSTING GOD

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” Psalms 56:3

Spurgeon said, “When you can’t trace God’s hand, trust His heart”.. That’s good advice. There are many who did just that.

Job couldn’t understand why he had been buffeted by painful adversities.

Abraham couldn’t understand why God would require him to sacrifice his son.

Jacob couldn’t understand why he was deprived of his son, thinking he was dead.

Joseph couldn’t understand why he was hated by his brothers and sold into slavery.

Moses couldn’t understand why he had to spend 40 years in the wilderness while his people suffered in bondage.

Mary and Martha couldn’t understand why the Lord wasn’t there to prevent the death of their brother.

History is filled with examples of people who found themselves in painful situations that they could not understand. But all who survived and thrived learned one grand lesson, that none of us should ever forget,—it is better to trust God than to try to understand Him.

Perhaps you are facing something today that has stretched you to your limits. You hurt and no one is there to help. You are looking for answers and God isn’t talking. What now? The answer to your dilemma is found in Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. “In all thy ways acknowledge him, And he shall direct thy paths.”. It worked for others and it will work for you! –David Stone (9/6/08)

THE SAD AND GLAD NEWS

We often hear people say, “No two people are alike”, and in a sense that is true. But, it also can be said that, by nature all people are alike. We all descended from Adam and have the same sinful nature. Of all men, “there is no difference”(Rom. 3:22), “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). Whether you trace  your ancestry back to faithful Abraham or Nimrod the rebel, there is no difference. We are all sinful and unfit for the kingdom of God. Your family tree might be that of royalty or rogues, either way you are a rebel against the King of kings until you claim Christ as your Lord and Savior. Whether you are a bum or a banker, without Christ you are spiritually bankrupt. Black or white, bond or free, rich or poor, learned or illiterate we’re all in the same boat by nature, and it’s sinking. That’s the bad news!

The good news is that, “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”(John 3:16). It is good news that, “Jesus. . . by the grace of God should taste death for every man”(Heb. 2:9); “. . .”he died for all”. . (2 Cor. 5:15), that we who are unrighteous “might be made the righteousness of God in him.”(2 Cor. 5:21), That is good news indeed— it is glorious! We have hope — but only in Him!

Jesus made salvation available for everyone, so anyone could be saved. Now “. . whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”(Rom. 10:13). God has provided everything everyone needs for anyone to be saved. All we have to do is “believe” to receive. It is easy for us because it was hard for Him. We can be saved because He was sacrificed. He died that we might live.

The sad news is there is none righteous, no not one. The glad news is, there is One righteous, yes just one. He who is righteous died for the unrighteous. “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him”(2 Cor. 5:21). “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved. . . (Acts17:31). The question is, will you receive Him or reject Him? – HDS
